Recent works on multiuser transmission techniques have shown that the linear growth of capacity in single user MIMO system can be translated to the multiuser MIMO scenario as well. In this paper, we propose a method pursuing performance gain of vector perturbation in multiuser downlink systems. Instead of employing maximum number of mobile users for communication, we use small part of them as virtual users for improving reliability of users participating communication. By controlling parameters of virtual users including information and perturbation vector, we obtain considerable improvement in the effective SNR, resulting in large gain in bit error rate performance. Simulation results on the realistic multiuser downlink systems show that the proposed method brings substantial performance gain over the standard vector perturbation with marginal overhead in computations.
Inflammation is an important factor in the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease. As a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily (TNFRSF9) expressed on immune cells, 4-1BB/CD137 provides a bidirectional inflammatory signal through binding to its ligand 4-1BBL. Both 4-1BB and 4-1BBL have been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory diseases.Eight-week-old male 4-1BB-deficient and wild-type (WT) mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) or a regular diet for 9 weeks. We demonstrate that 4-1BB deficiency protects against HFD-induced obesity, glucose intolerance, and fatty liver disease. The 4-1BB-deficient mice fed an HFD showed less body weight gain, adiposity, adipose infiltration of macrophages/T cells, and tissue levels of inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, interleukin-6, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 [MCP-1]) compared with HFD-fed control mice. HFD-induced glucose intolerance/insulin resistance and fatty liver were also markedly attenuated in the 4-1BB-deficient mice. These findings suggest that 4-1BB and 4-1BBL may be useful therapeutic targets for combating obesity-induced inflammation and metabolic disorders.
The seismic design of solid reinforced concrete bridge columns has been committed to, based on accumulated research and design specifications. The rational confinement model and seismic performance evaluation, however, are insufficient because of the lack of domestic and foreign design specifications about the experimental and analytical difficulties in the case of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns. In this paper, the seismic behavior of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns and its dependence on design variables are understood and explained. These research results can be used to derive the rational and economical design specifications for circular hollow sectional columns based on the result from the nonlinear analysis program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology).
OBJECTIVE—Protein kinase C (PKC)-δ, an upstream regulator of the Akt survival pathway, contributes to cellular dysfunction in the pathogenesis of diabetes. Herein, we examined the role of PKC-δ in neuronal apoptosis through Akt in the retinas of diabetic rats. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—We used retinas from 24- and 35-week-old male Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima fatty (OLETF) diabetic and Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) nondiabetic rats. To assess whether PKC-δ affects Akt signaling and cell death in OLETF rat retinas, we examined 1) PKC-δ activity and apoptosis; 2) protein levels of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase) p85, heat shock protein 90 (HSP90), and protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A); 3) Akt phosphorylation; and 4) Akt binding to HSP90 or PP2A in LETO and OLETF retinas in the presence or absence of rottlerin, a highly specific PKC-δ inhibitor, or small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) for PKC-δ and HSP90. RESULTS—In OLETF retinas from 35-week-old rats, ganglion cell death, PKC-δ and PP2A activity, and Akt-PP2A binding were significantly increased and Akt phosphorylation and Akt-HSP90 binding were decreased compared with retinas from 24-week-old OLETF and LETO rats. Rottlerin and PKC-δ siRNA abrogated these effects in OLETF retinas from 35-week-old rats. HSP90 siRNA significantly increased ganglion cell death and Akt-PP2A complexes and markedly decreased HSP90-Akt binding and Akt phosphorylation in LETO retinas from 35-week-old rats compared with those from nontreated LETO rats. CONCLUSIONS—PKC-δ activation contributes to neuro-retinal apoptosis in diabetic rats by inhibiting Akt-mediated signaling pathways.
Although alteration in protein phosphorylation by specific protein kinases is of importance in transducing cellular signals in a variety of neural/endocrine systems, little is known about protein phosphorylation in the hvpothalamus. The present study aims to explore whether activation of the second messenger-dependent protein kinases affects phosphorylation of specific proteins using a cell free phosphorylation system followed by SDS-polvacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Cytoplasmic fractions derived from hvpothalami of immature rats were used as substrates and several activators and/or inhibitors of CAMP-, phosphatidylinositol- and Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent protein kinases were assessed. Many endogenous proteins were extensively phosphorylated and depending on the signal transduction pathways, phosphorvlation profiles were markedly different. The present data indicate that extracellular signals may affect cellular events through protein phosphorylation by second messengers-protein kinases in the rat hypothalamus.
This paper treats the estimation of human impedance and their application to human-robot collaboration work. Initially, we perform an experiment at which the human becomes a slave and the robot behaves like a master having F/T sensor on its end. The human impedance expressed in terms of mass, damping, and stiffness properties are estimated based on the force data measured by F/T sensor and the commanded position data of the robot. To show the effectiveness of the estimated human impedance, we perform the second experiment at which the roles of the human and the robot are reversed. It is shown that the robot using the estimated human impedance follows the trajectory commanded by human very smoothly.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the inelastic behaviour and ductility capacity of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers based on various design parameters. The ultimate strength and ductility of these bridge piers varied with the amount and arrangement of lateral reinforcement, the ratio of the inside to outside diameter of the column sections, the axial load ratio and longitudinal steel percentage. A total of eight solid and hollow circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with these design variables was tested under a constant axial load and cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, the RCAHEST (reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology), was used to predict the inelastic behaviours of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers. Also, the modified lateral confining effect model was adopted and incorporated into the structural element library for RCAHEST. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behaviour and ductility capacity of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers is verified by comparing the analytical results with test data developed by the authors.
