Implementation and control of a small-scale HVDC lab prototype considering grid code requirements

The number of high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) installations is growing rapidly nowadays, and network operators are working to define grid codes that regulate behaviors of HVDC system to operate under different conditions. This paper presents implementation of a small-scale HVDC lab prototype, which aims at studying the characteristics of the VSC-HVDC system and meeting the requirements of grid code. Some key requirements in grid code are analyzed. Control strategies and design considerations to meet these requirements are presented in this paper. Finally, the validity of the design and the control strategies is verified by simulation and experimental results.

Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to image the shape of individual IgG molecules deposited onto a graphite surface. Images of these noncrystalline biological specimens free of the contradictions reported earlier could be obtained under atmospheric conditions. The results are reported including some comments on problems associated with the assignment of the visible features.

Blockchain application within Net-Zero Energy Factories. A cost-benefit analysis for a German carpentry

The planning of Net-Zero Energy Factories might contribute to the better integration of power generated by volatile renewable energy sources into manufacturing systems. However, the investments needed for operating a Net-Zero Energy Factory might dissuade facility operators. The application of a blockchain might represent the missing element to make Net-Zero Energy Factories an attractive solution. The aim of this study is to present a cost-benefit analysis to plan a German carpentry as a Net-Zero Energy Factory. Businesses can increase the transparency of their energy usage by storing the Net-Zero Energy Factory's information, such as energy production, consumption and manufactured goods, in a blockchain. The increase in transparency can help to satisfy the regulatory compliance of green energy set by their respective governments. It is also helpful for businesses to demand higher prices while selling their products to customers, retailers and government projects.

Distributed Ancillary Services in Smart Distribution Grids: Demand, Requirements and Benefits

The progressing distribution of the electricity supply necessitates redesigning the mechanism for providing ancillary services particularly by the distribution grid. Methods of voltage regulation and congestion management particularly have to satisfy new standards since, although the development of renewables is increasing the number of resources with an impact, these resources’ individual contribution is comparatively slight. Taking the state-of-the-art and the basic regulatory conditions in Germany as a point of departure, this paper analyzes the requirements for algorithms and communication systems that provide distributed support to distribution grid operation. A novel mathematical method that prevents voltage range deviations and feeder overloads based on sensitivities is presented and validated in simulations by a case study. An analysis of the communications systems for monitoring and control technologies for distributed energy resources, including the available communication channels, serves as the basis for an evaluation of the suitability of current control mechanisms in the future. The findings of a live field test in a real 110 kV distribution grid corroborate the necessity for coordinated grid support by distributed energy resources and demonstrate the limits of current methods.

Short-term charging infrastructure expansion potential with centralised control – modelling, outcomes and issues

The need for grid expansion can be reduced and the ubiquitous availability of charging stations can be significantly increased in the short term through centralised grid-serving control of the charging infrastructure. This paper presents a method for determining the expansion potential of charging infrastructure using centralised charging management. The mixed-integer linear optimisation problem-based methodology can be used to generate findings on the potential of centralised grid-serving control, which can support grid operators in strategic decisions on the further development of their metrological grid monitoring, inter alia. The results can also be used to assess the need for grid expansion as a result of the electromobility ramp-up. The methodology is applied here to a CIGRE benchmark network and the low-voltage grid of the city of Kiel.

The Use of Concept Mapping to Support Collaborative Advanced Design Projects

This paper describes the collaboration efforts of three departments of the faculty of mechanical engineering at Technische Universitat Darmstadt (TUD), aimed at providing students of engineering design (ED) and industrial design (ID) with a common platform to work on. To this end, ED and ID students were provided with an opportunity to jointly practice collaborative advanced design projects, while acting as test subjects for the application of a networked, easy-to-learn, accessible software tool for knowledge modelling and data exchange. Projects were closely monitored to provide some insight into how the software-based, interdisciplinary collaboration works. The aim was to determine, whether the visualization and modelling of the interconnected nature of the design process and product features increases process awareness in the participants. Thereby, a contribution to process improvement for industrial product design was intended.

Net-Zero Energy Factories as Active Players in the Decarbonization Process. An Application for Blockchain

More than 32 % of small and medium enterprises in Europe generate electricity using solar resources. The operation of net-zero energy factories of such industrial prosumers can help system operators to integrate better into the grid. The application of blockchain technologies can help the industrial operator to generate extra revenue by providing flexibility services to system operators. This study analyses the role that facility systems can play if they are designed as net-zero energy factories and integrate blockchain-based technologies in their processes.
