Environmental Temperature and Composition of Body Fat.

Samples of subcutaneous body fat were analyzed for fatty acids and iodine values in hens maintained at 3 environmental temperatures. It was found that fat from hens maintained at 0°C was significantly more unsaturated and contained more di- and hexa-enoic acid than fat from birds kept at either 21° or 32°C. There were no changes in deep body temperature or temperature of the tissue at site of fat biopsy which correlated with the changes in fat composition. It is suggested that metabolic adjustments associated with cold adaptation are responsible for the changes in body fat composition.

Nutritive value of sausage casings from processed cattle hides

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the nutritive value of sausage casings prepared from cattle hides as a protein source for day-old hybrid (Hubbard × Hubbard) broiler chickens. The results demonstrate that sausage casings are an available protein source for broiler chicks that can be substituted for soybean meal at levels up to 8% of the feed without affecting average daily gain and feed efficiency. Dietary Saturated Medium-Chain Triglycerides and Vitamin E Deficiency in Chicks and Rats.

Saturated medium-chain triglycerides (C6-12; MCT) were included in vitamin E-deficient diets fed to chickens and rats. This produced a high incidence of exudative diathesis in the birds but exerted a protective effect on testicular degeneration in the rats. It is speculated that this difference is related to the capacity of dietary MCT to decrease linoleate turnover in the rat but to increase it in the chicken, leading to opposite effects in the affected organs of the two deficient species.

Uridine and Stimulant-Induced Motor Activity

Chronic administration of uridine alters dopaminergic activity and related behavior. The present study investigated this effect using amphetamine and cocaine-induced activity and rotation in rats with unilateral dopaminergic lesions. Adult, female Sprague-Dawley rats with free access to food and water received daily intraperitoneal uridine (16 mg/kg) or an equal volume of saline. Activity was assessed for 10 min in a photocell chamber 30 min after intraperitoneal amphetamine or cocaine and 4 hr after the uridine or saline. Additional rats with unilateral dopaminergic lesions were treated comparably and assessed for stimulant-induced rotation. Uridine exerted no effect on body weight, activity, or rotation under baseline conditions. At higher doses, amphetamine and cocaine decreased activity and caused a dose-dependent increase in rotations. In the activity test, uridine-treated rats exhibited a significant increase in sensitivity to amphetamine but not to cocaine. In the rotation test, uridine-treated rats showed increased sensitivity to both stimulants. Finally, neurochemical analysis of a third set of comparably treated rats revealed that uridine blunted the amphetamine-induced increase in striatal dopamine. These observations are interpreted as indicating that chronic uridine modulates the stimulant-induced release of dopamine and, therefore, may be of therapeutic interest.
