Towards strategic Kriegspiel play with opponent modeling

Kriegspiel is a chess variant belonging to the family of invisible chess that encompasses partially observable variants of the popular game. Playing Kriegspiel is difficult, first, because the player needs to maintain a belief over all possible board configurations. Second, the player needs to select his move, given his belief about the board configuration and given the likely responses of the opponent. Predicting the likely responses is crucial and has a long tradition in minimax approaches to fully observable games. Minimax assumes that the players are rational and have opposing preferences, which is common knowledge. Further, minimax is applicable only to fully observable games. In partially observable games one needs to model not only the opponent's preferences, but also the opponent's belief about the board configuration, and possibly his belief about the original player. Further, the opponent's level of expertise may also be in question in realistic settings.

Nonparametric Bayesian Learning of Other Agents? Policies in Interactive POMDPs

We consider an autonomous POMDP agent facing a multiagent environment with unknown opponents, that are modeled as finite state controllers. The agent first learns the models from (imperfectly) observed behavior, and subsequently exploits them in planning for its own optimal policy by constructing an interactive POMDP. In the learning phase, Bayesian nonparametric methods are used to sample from the posterior distribution over the infinite-dimensional space of all possible controllers, resulting in models whose size scales with the complexity of observed behavior. Experimental results show that learning improves the agent's performance, which increases with the amount of data collected during the learning phase.

Decision-theoretic cooperative sensor planning

This paper describes a decision-theoretic approach to cooperative sensor planning between multiple autonomous vehicles executing a military mission. For this autonomous vehicle application, intelligent cooperative reasoning must be used to select optimal vehicle viewing locations and select optimal camera pan and tilt angles throughout the mission. Decisions are made in such a way as to maximize the value of information gained by the sensors while maintaining vehicle stealth. Because the mission involves multiple vehicles, cooperation can be used to balance the work load and to increase information gain. This paper presents the theoretical foundations of our cooperative sensor planning research and describes the application of these techniques to ARPA's Unmanned Ground Vehicle program.

Fault tree based diagnostics using fuzzy logic

Fuzzy set theory is investigated as a tool for the diagnostics of systems described by means of a fault tree. The objective is to diagnose component failures from the observation of fuzzy symptoms using the information contained in a fault tree. A two-step procedure is used to solve the problem. In this first step, causal reasoning is used to diagnose failure modes, consisting of minimal cut-sets of basic events, from the observation of triggered gates treated as symptoms. In the second step, the authors identify the particular components which have failed based on the diagnosed failure modes. To perform this second step, the solution of a fuzzy relational equation a= V-product (S/sup T/ alpha x) connecting failure mode a to basic events x is derived. With this method, the diagnostics equations can be symmetrically generated and solved in terms of the tree's basic events. The systematic nature with which a diagnosis can be generated from a fault tree lends this method to potential application of object-based programming techniques.< >

Learning Others' Intentional Models in Multi-Agent Settings Using Interactive POMDPs

Interactive partially observable Markov decision processes (I-POMDPs) provide a principled framework for planning and acting in a partially observable, stochastic and multi-agent environment. It extends POMDPs to multi-agent settings by including models of other agents in the state space and forming a hierarchical belief structure. In order to predict other agents' actions using I-POMDPs, we propose an approach that effectively uses Bayesian inference and sequential Monte Carlo sampling to learn others' intentional models which ascribe to them beliefs, preferences and rationality in action selection. Empirical results show that our algorithm accurately learns models of the other agent and has superior performance than methods that use subintentional models. Our approach serves as a generalized Bayesian learning algorithm that learns other agents' beliefs, strategy levels, and transition, observation and reward functions. It also effectively mitigates the belief space complexity due to the nested belief hierarchy.
