Sub 0.15dB noise figure room temperature GaAs LNA for next generation radio telescope

This paper presents the design and results of a cascoded GaAs LNA design for radio astronomy purposes. The LNA has been made in the OMMIC D007IH process. The paper describes the design and the measured results using an on-wafer tuner setup. In this paper we present extremely low noise figures with a good power match and the simulations and measurements are matching very well.

Decade Wide Bandwidth Integrated Very Low Noise Amplifier

This paper describes the design, realization and characterization of an integrated Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) with a bandwidth from 0.4 to 8 GHz. A very good noise figure is achieved in this frequency band. The design uses a source impedance of 150 ohm in the contrary to the standard of 50 ohm. The load impedance is 50 ohm. The use of a non-50 input source impedance creates new possibilities for the design of the power and noise matching circuitry. A combination of a good power and noise match can be achieved for a very broad band, with a minimum of components. This concept requires a non-standard antenna (source) output impedance (150 ohm), which is for most antenna principles easier to realize then 50 ohm [1]. The LNA will be part of an active antenna phased array system, which should operate from 0.2 to 2 GHz [2].

Broadband differentially fed tapered slot antenna array for radio astronomy applications

This paper describes the preliminary design results of a differentially fed tapered slot antenna. Traditional unbalanced tapered slot antennas often employ a bilateral strip line feed, or a separate feed board, in combination with a potentially lossy radial stub and microstrip line (balun). In order to reduce the associated transmission line losses, a differentially fed tapered slot antenna is considered. Main focus is on the measurement procedure and the determination of the active reflection coefficient. The properties of the (undesired) common modes are also discussed. Finally, the effective area for broadside is determined and turned out to be larger than 80% of the physical aperture area of the array.

Characterization of a Low-Frequency Radio Astronomy Prototype Array in Western Australia

We report characterization results for an engineering prototype of a next-generation low-frequency radio astronomy array. This prototype, which we refer to as the Aperture Array Verification System 0.5 (AAVS0.5), is a sparse pseudo-random array of 16 log-periodic antennas designed for 70-450 MHz. It is co-located with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at the Murchison Radioastronomy Observatory (MRO) near the Australian Square Kilometre Array (SKA) core site. We characterize the AAVS0.5 using two methods: in-situ radio interferometry with astronomical sources and an engineering approach based on detailed full-wave simulation. In-situ measurement of the small prototype array is challenging due to the dominance of the Galactic noise and the relatively weaker calibration sources easily accessible in the southern sky. The MWA, with its 128 "tiles" and up to 3 km baselines, enabled in-situ measurement via radio interferometry. We present array sensitivity and beam pattern characterization results and compare to detailed full-wave simulation. We discuss areas where differences between the two methods exist and offer possibilities for improvement. Our work demonstrates the value of the dual astronomy-simulation approach in upcoming SKA design work.

The challenge of the design for the new generation of polarimeters is to evaluate the accuracy in the measurements of the polarization state of an observed source. Different errors can affect this accuracy, including imprecision of the antenna mechanical implementation and uncertainties in the array deploying. We present a study of the two families of misalignments errors expected to affect the array antenna polarization performances of a low frequency irregular aperture array. The case of study is a low frequency aperture array verification system for SKA (Square kilometre Array) named AAVS0.5. Misalignment errors are shown to produce negligible degradation of the IXR (intrinsic cross-polarization ratio) within a large range of tolerance angles.

SKA low frequency aperture array

Signal processing combined with communications technology are at the heart of all advanced radio telescope systems. Modern IT can provide the radical improvements in capability and performance that are driving the science capabilities of the current and planned instruments. At the forefront of improved performance are the "all-electronic" collector technologies, aperture arrays. We discuss the implementation of the very large low-frequency phased array system being developed for the Square Kilometre Array. This shows opportunities for gaining flexibility to scientific benefit by using mainstream technology.
