Phonon density of states and superconductivity inNd1.85Ce0.15

Inelastic-neutron-scattering techniques have been used to measure the generalized phonon density of states in superconducting ${\mathrm{Nd}}_{1.85}$${\mathrm{Ce}}_{0.15}$${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$. There is reasonable agreement at low energies between our measurements and recent point-contact-tunneling density-of-states measurements reported by Huang et al., which suggests that phonons play a major role in pairing in the electron-superconductor systems. The correspondence at higher energies, however, is not particularly good, but probably reflects the difficulty in obtaining quantitative tunneling data.

Rotational Dynamics of C ₆₀ in Na ₂ RbC ₆₀

We have measured the low-energy neutron inelastic-scattering (NIS) spectra of superconducting Na2RbC60 in the temperature range 50–350 K. Well-defined librational peaks are observed at 50 K at 2.83(17) meV (FWHM = 1.7(5) meV). They soften and broaden with increasing temperature. Their behaviour mimics that found in solid C60 and differs markedly from K3C60. The rotational barrier for C60 reorientations in Na2RbC60 is somewhat higher than in pristine C60 and approximately half as large as in K3C60. An order-disorder transition is anticipated at a temperature higher than that found in C60.

Polarization and structural transitions of irradiated vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene copolymer

The structure and polarization of the vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene copolymer (50/50 mass ratio), a composition in the range that was first reported to show giant electrostriction after electron irradiation, has been studied by neutron scattering under an electric field. In addition, nonirradiated and irradiated samples were studied by thermal analysis and by the thermal pulse method. Both irradiation-induced melting-point and Curie-point depression and broadening were observed, but no field-induced reversible crystal-crystal conversion was observed in the irradiated specimens.

Application of neutron scattering to Portland cement

Abstract Portland cement concrete is actually a composite material consisting of fine and coarse stone aggregate in a matrix of hydrated calcium silicates and aluminates. The aggregate to binder mass ratio is typically 3: 1. At a price of roughly 0.05 US dollars per kg, concrete is often the lowest cost material for construction, and hence it is widely used. In the United States, the annual consumption of Portland cement is approximately 80 million metric tons, or roughly 500 million metric tons of concrete. The largest single market is streets and highways which accounts for 30 percent of total consumption 1.11. Consequently, transportation agencies like the Federal Highway Administration have a major interest in research to better understand and improve this material.
