Spontaneous emission spectrum of a four-level atom coupled by three kinds of reservoirs

A model of a four-level atom embedded in a double-band photonic crystal (PC) is presented. The atomic transitions from the upper two levels to the lower two levels are coupled by the same reservoir which is assumed in turn to be isotropic PC modes, anisotropic PC modes and free vacuum modes. The effects of the fine structure of the atomic ground state levels and the quantum interference on the spontaneous emission spectrum of an atom are investigated in detail. Most interestingly, it is shown for the first time that new spontaneous emission lines are produced from the fine splitting of atomic ground state levels in the isotropic PC case. Quantum interference induces additional narrow spontaneous lines near the transition from the empty upper level to the lower levels.

Dispersion Energies with the i-DMFT Method

The recently proposed i-DMFT method [Wang and Baerends, Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 013001 (2022)] has been proven to be ideally suited to recover strong static correlation in dissociating covalent bonds. Here, the application to van der Waals bonding is investigated using the prototype van der Waals systems triplet H2 and ground-state He2. It is demonstrated that the i-DMFT orbitals are in this case essentially different from the natural orbitals, and the i-DMFT occupations differ substantially from the NO occupations. This is shown to lead to rather deficient interaction potential curves, even if a reasonable well depth may be obtained by fitting of parameters. If the basis set is extended, however, it may no longer be possible to generate van der Waals bonding at all. The linear behavior of the two-electron cumulant energy Ecum as a function of the "entropy" S along a dissociation coordinate, which was the basis of i-DMFT, is distinctly poorer in the case of van der Waals bonding than for covalent bonding.

Resonance states of open quantum dots

We have computed the spectra of resonance states for several open quantum dot systems. These states are identified using the electron dwell time. The statistics of the spectra are exactly the same as that of the corresponding closed system, even when the level widths are comparable with the average spacing. In particular, for a regular structure, e.g., an open rectangular quantum dot, the resonance state level spacing satisfies the Poisson distribution. For an irregular structure, e.g., an open Sinai billiard, we found that the spacings satisfy the GOE or GUE statistics depending on whether an external magnetic field is applied. Thus in this regime of ballistic transport, the statistics of resonance transmission contains characteristics of the corresponding intrinsic quantum level distribution. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Lagrange function method for energy optimization directly in the space of natural orbitals

Abstract We propose a Lagrange method to obtain the electronic energy directly in the space of natural orbitals. The Lagrange function contains constraints to force the off‐diagonal elements of the one‐particle density matrix to zero, so the molecular orbitals converge to the natural orbitals simultaneously while the energy minimizes. The recently discovered “generalized Pauli conditions” for the occupation numbers are invoked to generate an initial approximation. As a demonstration of this approach, we study the system of three electrons in six orbitals which has become a paradigm for investigating multi‐particle entanglement.

Recently we proposed an information entropy based method for electronic structure calculations within the density-matrix functional theory(DMFT) (Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 013001), dubbed as $i$-DMFT. Comments have been raised regarding the accuracy of the one-particle density-matrix compared to that from the wave function, and the universality of the functional. We address these questions and the problematic case of HeH$^+$.

Potential Energy Curves of Hydrogen Halides HX(F, Cl, Br) with the i-DMFT Method

The information entropy based on the occupation numbers has been found to play a central role in a description of electron correlation within the density-matrix functional theory [i-DMFT, see Phys. Rev. Lett. 2022, 128, 013001]. In this article, the i-DMFT method is applied to predict potential energy curves, equilibrium bond lengths, and harmonic vibrational frequencies for the hydrogen halides: HF, HCl, and HBr. The results are compared with other theoretical calculations and experimental spectroscopic data.

Statistical analysis of magnetic-field spectra

We have calculated and statistically analyzed the magnetic-field spectrum (the $B$ spectrum) at fixed electron Fermi energy for two quantum dot systems with classically chaotic shape. This problem arises naturally in transport measurements where the incoming electron has a fixed energy while one tunes the magnetic field to obtain resonance conductance patterns. The $B$ spectrum, defined as the collection of values ${{B}_{i}}$ at which conductance ${g(B}_{i})$ takes extremal values, is determined by a quadratic eigenvalue equation, in distinct difference to the usual linear eigenvalue problem satisfied by the energy levels. We found that the lower part of the $B$ spectrum satisfies the distribution belonging to the Gaussian unitary ensemble, while the higher part obeys a Poisson-like behavior. We also found that the $B$ spectrum fluctuations of the chaotic system are consistent with the results we obtained from random matrices.

Ultrafast response of cubic silicon carbide to intense attosecond pulse light

In this paper we are motivated to numerically investigate the fundamental strong-field and attosecond response processes in wide band-gap solids, using the first-principle approach based on time-dependent density functional theory, advancing our understanding of fundamental strong-field and attosecond physics in solids. Taking cubic silicon carbide as a concrete example, the influence of pulse parameters on the ultrafast responses is demonstrated, which allows one to gain a useful independent insight into the interaction processes of attosecond light pulses with solids, revealing information currently not accessible by experiment. We also demonstrate control of the charge transfer and dielectric permittivity by intense attosecond pulse light. It is concluded that a single-cycle attosecond pulse light can be used to effectively manipulate the charge transfer and dielectric properties of wide-band gap materials with great potential for ultrafast device applications.
