Branched Aramid Nanofibers

Interconnectivity of components in three-dimensional networks (3DNs) is essential for stress transfer in hydrogels, aerogels, and composites. Entanglement of nanoscale components in the network relies on weak short-range intermolecular interactions. The intrinsic stiffness and rod-like geometry of nanoscale components limit the cohesive energy of the physical crosslinks in 3DN materials. Nature realizes networked gels differently using components with extensive branching. Branched aramid nanofibers (BANFs) mimicking polymeric components of biological gels were synthesized to produce 3DNs with high efficiency stress transfer. Individual BANFs are flexible, with the number of branches controlled by base strength in the hydrolysis process. The extensive connectivity of the BANFs allows them to form hydro- and aerogel monoliths with an order of magnitude less solid content than rod-like nanocomponents. Branching of nanofibers also leads to improved mechanics of gels and nanocomposites.

Light confinement in low-index particles with all-dielectric anisotropic metamaterial shell (Conference Presentation)

We propose and demonstrate low-refractive-index particles with all-dielectric metamaterial shell which lead to formation of high intensity photonic nanojets. We show that the extra degree of freedom because of the anisotropy of the shell gives rise to an increase in the photonic jet intensity inside the metamaterial shell without a need to increase the size of the particle. The anisotropy of the shell can also control the spectral and spatial location of the Mie-type multipolar resonances to achieve the desired scattering. In experiments, the metamaterial shell is composed of strong nonlinear materials leading to enhanced nonlinear wavelength conversion at nanoscale.

We demonstrate a new principle for realizing a miniaturized and scalable platform for nonlinear optics using dielectric particles with nanostructured nonlinear metamaterial shells. We show numerical and experimental results of enhanced second-harmonic generation in them.

Photocatalytic Hedgehog Particles for High Ionic Strength Environments

High ionic strength environments can profoundly influence catalytic reactions involving charged species. However, control of selectivity and yield of heterogeneous catalytic reactions involving nano- and microscale colloids remains hypothetical because high ionic strength leads to aggregation of particle dispersions. Here we show that microscale hedgehog particles (HPs) with semiconductor nanoscale spikes display enhanced stability in solutions of monovalent/divalent salts in both aqueous and hydrophobic media. HPs enable tuning of photocatalytic reactions toward high-value products by adding concentrated inert salts to amplify local electrical fields in agreement with Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek theory. After optimization of HP geometry for a model photocatalytic reaction, we show that high salt conditions increase the yield of HP-facilitated photooxidation of 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol to benzaldehyde and 2-phenoxyacetophenone by 6 and 35 times, respectively. Depending on salinity, electrical fields at the HP–media interface increase from 1.7 × 104 V/m to 8.5 × 107 V/m, with high fields favoring products generated via intermediate cation radicals rather than neutral species. Electron transfer rates were modulated by varying the ionic strength, which affords a convenient and hardly used reaction pathway for engineering a multitude of redox reactions including those involved in the environmental remediation of briny and salty water.
