Angle of Arrival and Centimeter Distance Estimation on a Smart UWB Sensor Node

Accurate and low-power indoor localization is becoming more and more of a necessity to empower novel consumer and industrial applications. In this field, the most promising technology is based on UWB modulation; however, current UWB positioning systems do not reach centimeter accuracy in general deployments due to multipath and nonisotropic antennas, still necessitating several fixed anchors to estimate an object's position in space. This article presents an in-depth study and assessment of angle of arrival (AoA) UWB measurements using a compact, low-power solution integrating a novel commercial module with phase difference of arrival (PDoA) estimation as integrated feature. Results demonstrate the possibility of reaching centimeter distance precision and ang 2.4 average angular accuracy in many operative conditions, e.g., in a ang 90 range around the center. Moreover, integrating the channel impulse response, the phase differential of arrival, and the point-to-point distance, an error correction model is discussed to compensate for reflections, multipaths, and front-back ambiguity.

SPDT and standard CNC-grinding of tungsten carbide molds for precision glass molding: an experimental process analysis

The contents of this work are based on [1], [2] and [3]. Using the three wagons approach, critical parameters were identified and the process window of ductile machining was considerably enlarged. This made it possible to increase the critical depth of cut, which is ten times greater than predicted by the Bifano formula. A new formula to describe the machining process was developed and verified experimentally. In addition, the level of surface roughness (Sq) generated in ductile mode was analyzed and a formula was generated that allows roughness prediction depending on the critical process parameters. Finally, both formulas were used to create optimized sets of process parameters that produce a "first light" in ductile machining for a) single point diamond turning (SPDT) on ultra-precision machines (UPM) of binder-free carbide form and b) non-UPM, standard CNC ductile grinding of WC and glass.

A Lora-Based and Maintenance-Free Cattle Monitoring System for Alpine Pastures and Remote Locations

The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) is boosting the proliferation of sensors and smart devices in industry and daily life. Continuous monitoring IoT systems are also finding application in agriculture, particularly in the realm of smart farming. The adoption of wearable sensors to record the activity of livestock has garnered increasing interest. Such a device enables farmers to locate, monitor, and constantly assess the health status of their cattle more efficiently and effectively, even in challenging terrain and remote locations. This work presents a maintenance-free and robust smart sensing system that is capable of tracking cattle in remote locations and collecting activity parameters, such as the individual's grazing- and resting time. To support the paradigm of smart farming, the cattle tracker is capable of monitoring the cow's activity by analyzing data from an accelerometer, magnetometer, temperature sensor, and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) module, providing them over Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) to a backend server. By consuming 511.9 J per day with all subsystems enabled and a data transmission every 15 minutes, the custom-designed sensor node achieves a battery lifetime of 4 months. When exploiting the integrated solar energy harvesting subsystem, this can be even increased by 40% to up to 6 months. The final sensing system's robust operation is proven in a trial run with two cows on a pasture for over three days. Evaluations of the experimental results clearly show behavior patterns, which confirms the practicability of the proposed solution.

Estimation of Geothermal Reservoir Properties Using the Ensemble Kalman Filter

Information on the permeability at depth is important for the exploitation of geothermal reservoirs. The Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) is tool for property estimation if temporal observations are available. Observations can be temperature, hydraulic head during pumping tests, and chemical concentrations from tracer experiments at a few boreholes. The EnKF is a recursive Bayesian method incorporating observations in a Monte-Carlo-ensemble of reservoir simulations considering probability distributions. We present in synthetic test cases the application of the EnKF for estimating permeability and demonstrate its use for exploration planning. We apply the method to the 2005-tracer experiment of the Soultz-sous-Forêts geothermal reservoir.

The third and final volume on the life work of the charismatic landscape architect Dieter Kienast. The landscape designs of Dieter Kienast have a great lyrical quality. By reducing his designs to a few essential elements and principles, Kienast skilfully plays with opposing factors such as the natural and the artificial, order and chaos. The continual juxtaposition of town and country, rationalism and romanticism, garden history and modern art, have, by their very simplicity, the power to move. Through his wide range of materials, encompassing not only plants, but also steel, concrete and glass, and with the cooperation of architects and artists, Dieter Kienast creates spaces which are sensitive to the mood of modern times, and bear witness to them. Amongst the projects included in this volume are the International Horticultural Show in Graz 2000, the EXPO2000 in Hanover and the landscaping around the Tate Modern in London. Dieter Kienast (1945-1998) was one of the most important exponents in contemporary landscape architecture. He was Professor in Rapperswil from 1980-91, in Karisruhe from 1992-97 and from 1997, he was Professor at the ETH Zurich. Despite his untimely death in 1998, his international reputation is undisputed.

Flexible electronics based on oxide semiconductors

Flexible electronic devices open the way to novel applications like rollable displays and smart textiles. Due to their high carrier mobility and low deposition temperature, oxide semiconductors, especially In-Ga-Zn-O (IGZO), are promising materials for thin-film transistors (TFTs) fabricated on flexible, free-standing, but temperature-sensitive substrates. The performance of flexible IGZO TFTs can be improved by adopting double-gate, self-aligned, or vertical-type device architectures. For example, self-alignment enables the realization of TFTs with 500 nm channel length and 135 MHz transit frequency, whereas vertical integration allows reducing the TFT footprint. At the same time, the bendability of IGZO TFTs can be improved by reducing the strain induced in the devices. This leads to TFTs which are functional while bent around a human hair.

Flexible In–Ga–Zn–O Thin-Film Transistors on Elastomeric Substrate Bent to 2.3% Strain

In this letter, a photolithographic fabrication process is used to manufacture indium-gallium-zinc-oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) with mobilities > 10 cm ² /Vs directly on a 80 μm thick polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. Once the fabrication is completed, the PDMS is detached from a silicon wafer used as carrier substrate. Due to the thermal mismatch between silicon and PDMS, the release results in a reduction of the PDMS area by 7.2%, which leads to the formation of out-of-plane wrinkles on the TFT surface. The reflattening of the wrinkles under tensile strain enables device functionality, while the TFTs are bent up to 2.3% strain. Mechanical stability of the TFTs with our wrinkled approach is shown by electrically characterizing them at bending radii down to 6 mm.
