A linear inversion method to infer exhumation rates in space and time from thermochronometric data

Abstract. We present a formal inverse procedure to extract exhumation rates from spatially distributed low temperature thermochronometric data. Our method is based on a Gaussian linear inversion approach in which we define a linear problem relating exhumation rate to thermochronometric age with rates being parameterized as variable in both space and time. The basis of our linear forward model is the fact that the depth to the "closure isotherm" can be described as the integral of exhumation rate, ..., from the cooling age to the present day. For each age, a one-dimensional thermal model is used to calculate a characteristic closure temperature, and is combined with a spectral method to estimate the conductive effects of topography on the underlying isotherms. This approximation to the four-dimensional thermal problem allows us to calculate closure depths for data sets that span large spatial regions. By discretizing the integral expressions into time intervals we express the problem as a single linear system of equations. In addition, we assume that exhumation rates vary smoothly in space, and so can be described through a spatial correlation function. Therefore, exhumation rate history is discretized over a set of time intervals, but is spatially correlated over each time interval. We use an a priori estimate of the model parameters in order to invert this linear system and obtain the maximum likelihood solution for the exhumation rate history. An estimate of the resolving power of the data is also obtained by computing the a posteriori variance of the parameters and by analyzing the resolution matrix. The method is applicable when data from multiple thermochronometers and elevations/depths are available. However, it is not applicable when there has been burial and reheating. We illustrate our inversion procedure using examples from the literature.

Inversion of provenance data and sediment load into spatially varying erosion rates

Abstract Sediment fingerprinting methods aim to determine the relative contribution of different source areas in detrital sediments based on natural properties – fingerprints – of the source areas. Here, we use U/Th–Pb age signatures as fingerprints, assuming that the age signal is not altered during erosion–transportation–deposition events, and given that recent technological advances enable precise dating of large amounts of grains. We introduce a formal inversion method that allows to disentangle the amalgamation of source contributions in detrital zircon data and enables to convert this information into an erosion rate map starting from the spatial distribution of zircon age signatures. Relying on the least‐squares method and using prior and covariance information to deal with non‐uniqueness, we show, using synthetic and natural examples, that we are able to retrieve erosion rate patterns of a catchment when the age distribution and zircon fertility for each source area are well known. Moreover, we show that not only zircon age fingerprints but also other tracers such as mineral content can be used. Furthermore, we found that adding data from samples taken at the outlet of tributaries improves the estimation of erosion rate patterns. We conclude that the least squares inverse model applied to detrital data has great potential for investigating erosion rates. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A_files are seven terrace maps of the region of Jask, Tang, Gurdim, Konarak, Chabahar-Ramin, Lipar and Pasabander.
B_file are results of Radiocarbon and 230Th/U dating of mollusk shells from the marine deposits above the terraces.
C_file are results of Optically Stimulated Luminescence dating (OSL) of said deposits.
D_files are field pictures.
The data is published in support for the paper mentioned in the title (submitted to Earth Surface Dynamics). Brief description:
Terrace maps are accompanied with a datamodel excel file explaining the different GIS layers.
The maps are provided in both .KMZ files (for Google Earth) and Shapefiles Radiometric (i.e. both Radiocarbon and 230Th/U) analytical details are provided, together with XRD analysis of the Aragonitic shells and some SEM pictures of both Aragonitic and Calcitic shells. Method details are in the paper. OSL results are provided with the analytical details, such as: Environmental dose parameters, OSL raw measurements (out of the machine), OSL Histograms, Dose-Recovery tests and Fading test results. Method details are in the paper. Additional field pictures are provided with their legends (.txt file) and geolocalisation (.kmz file).

Inversion of detrital zircon data to constrain spatially varying erosion rates

<p>Landscapes evolve through surface processes that are often transient in space and time. To understand the underlying geomorphic processes, one must assess how erosion rates vary spatially. This can be done using provenance analysis. Here, we introduce a formal inversion method to derive erosion patterns using detrital zircon age data as fingerprints. Zircons are omnipresent in Earth&#8217;s crust and contain information about the time since (re)crystallization in their U/Th-Pb ratio. For each geological unit having undergone a specific tectonic or magmatic history, one can find a unique age-frequency signature. Hence, erosion and sedimentation of grains originating from diverse source areas lead to a mix of the varying age-frequency signatures in sediments found at the outlet of a catchment. Considering that the age signal is not altered during erosion-transportation-deposition events, and given that recent technological advances enable precise dating of large amounts of grains, U/Th-Pb zircon ages provide an appropriate fingerprinting tool. Our inversion approach relies on the least-squares method with a priori information and model covariance to deal with non-uniqueness. We show with synthetic and natural examples that we are able to retrieve erosion rate patterns of a catchment when the age distribution for each geological unit is well known. Furthermore, relying on the nested form of catchments and their subcatchments, we demonstrate that adding samples taken at the outlet of subcatchments improves the estimation of erosion rate patterns. We conclude that the least squares inverse model applied on detrital zircon data has great potential for investigating erosion rates.</p>
