Resource Allocation Scheme Considering Local Channel Quality Information and Buffer Status of Relay Nodes in Relay-Based Cellular Networks

In this letter, we propose a distributed resource allocation scheme to improve performance of relay-based cellular networks. In the proposed scheme, eNB allocates resources to user equipments (UEs) by considering differences in UEs' channel status between relay and access zones, and to relay nodes (RNs) by considering both channel and buffer status of the RNs. Simulations show the proposed scheme outperforms existing schemes in terms of user throughput and fairness.

Handover triggering mechanism based on IEEE 802.21 in heterogeneous networks with LTE and WLAN

As the demands for various multimedia services requiring high capacity increase, shortage of wireless resources becomes a serious problem in cellular networks. In order to reduce the heavy load and increase overall capacity of cellular networks, internetworking between WLANs and cellular networks has being considered. However, in the internetworking of cellular networks and WLANs, since performance of overall networks is closely related with the execution timing of vertical handover, an efficient vertical handover triggering mechanism is required. Thus, in this paper, we propose a data rate based vertical handover triggering mechanism (DR-HTM) based on IEEE 802.21 Media Independent Handover (MIH) standard in order to maximize capacity of both WLANs and cellular networks. In DR-HTM, whenever a mobile node discovers WLAN, it obtains achievable data rate of the WLAN by using remote MIH services. Based on the information, the mobile node determines execution of vertical handover. To evaluate the performance of the DR-HTM, we have performed intensive simulations for handover triggering mechanisms based on data rate and RSS. From the results, we can find that loads of cellular networks are effectively shared with WLANs and capacity of overall networks can be maximized by using DR-HTM.

Femtocell interference analysis based on the development of system-level LTE simulator

Abstract Although femtocell can confer various benefits to both operators and users, many technical issues, such as interference coordination, network synchronization, self-configuration, and self-optimization must be considered to effectively deploy femtocells in real environments. In this article, we develop a system-level simulator in order to evaluate performance of long-term evolution (LTE)-femtocell systems. The simulator consists of five functional modules which realize packet scheduling and call admission control functionalities and model various wireless channel effects, real and non-real time traffics, and user mobility. These modules are managed by operational modules that follow event-driven programming. In addition, the simulator adopts a graphical user interface (GUI) that facilitates configuration, management, and observation of simulations in real time. Based on the simulator, we analyze effects of signal interference between macro- and femtocells under four scenarios. From the results, we confirm that the developed LTE-femtocell simulator can effectively support performance evaluation and analysis on various femtocell deployment scenarios.

Connection management of mobile nodes for transmission power control in WLAN APs

Recently, in order to serve rapidly increasing traffics, WLAN access points (APs) have been extensively deployed. As APs are densely placed, several problems, such as co-channel interference and load imbalance among APs, are introduced. Transmission power control of AP is considered as one of the techniques which can resolve the problems. However, if APs decrease their transmission power, mobile nodes (MNs), which are not located in the reduced communication range of those APs, are suddenly disconnected from their serving APs. This may cause degradation of system performance. In order to alleviate the degradation of system performance, we propose connection management scheme for MNs expected to be disconnected after the power control. The proposed scheme can improve throughput of the MNs by reconnecting them to neighbor APs which can offer the highest data rate.

Relay Selection and Resource Allocation Schemes for Effective Utilization of Relay Zones in Relay-Based Cellular Networks

In relay-based cellular networks, total system throughput and cell-edge user throughput are affected by relay selection (RS) and resource allocation (RA) schemes. In this letter, we propose an RS scheme and two RA schemes (optimal and heuristic) for relay-based cellular networks. Via simulation, we show that the proposed RS and RA schemes improve total throughput of relay-based cellular networks while maintaining cell-edge user throughput comparable to existing schemes.

Performance analysis of FlashLinQ with various yielding threshold values

Recently, Qualcomm Inc. has introduced MAC and PHY specifications, called FlashLinQ (FLQ), for device-to-device (D2D) communication. In FLQ, each D2D pair accesses to wireless medium through comparing signal to interference ratios (SIRs) and two predefined thresholds. In previous work for FLQ, only identical thresholds are considered for performance evaluation. Since performance of FLQ is mainly affected by the thresholds, they should be adjusted to optimize the network performance. In this paper, we evaluate performance of FLQ with various thresholds.

A Combined Power Control and Resource Allocation Scheme for D2D Communication Underlaying an LTE-Advanced System

The underlaying architecture of Device-to-device (D2D) communication supports direct communication between users by reusing the radio resources of the LTE-A system. Despite the co-channel interference between the conventional cellular user equipment (CUE) and the D2D communication user equipment (DUE), LTE-A system can improve the combined data rate of CUEs and DUEs through effective transmit power control and resource allocation schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism, which combines the resource allocation scheme with the transmit power control scheme to maximize the overall data rate (defined as the sum-rate in the paper). We perform system-level simulations to determine the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism in terms of increasing the sum-rate. The simulation result shows that the proposed mechanism can improve the sum-rate in an underlaying LTE-A system that supports D2D communication.
