Homogeneous optimization approach for reducing sensitivity of an optical lens system

During the production of a lens system, the assembling and manufacturing tolerances must be accurately controlled to ensure production efficiency. Thus, it is important to analyze and optimize the tolerance sensitivity of the lens system during the optical design phase to reduce optical performance degradation. We proposed an approach for appropriately controlling the tolerance sensitivity of a lens system. The proposed sensitivity optimization method can homogenize image performance for the same field under different tolerance values. Based on the results, we show that the implementation of the proposed method sharply reduces sensitivity and, consequently, improves the product yield rate by 15 to 17% compared with a traditional optimization method. As a practical example, a 40-megapixel f1.8 mobile phone camera lens design and optimization process was performed in our study. Our preliminary experimental results confirm that the proposed method is effective to reduce the optical sensitivity of the camera lens.

Design of a free-form lens system for short distance projection

A free-form lens system design is proposed for short distance projection. Free-form surface shape and non-rotational symmetrical structure provide us more freedoms for optimization. The catadioptric structure is also used to reduce the overall length of the whole system. The designed projector lens system consists of two parts. The first part is a rotationally symmetrical lens system which corrects the basic aberrations. The second part contains a free-form lens and a reflector which correct the distortion and other aberrations. We achieve 55inch projected image size at a display screen which is 300mm away from the lens system. The maximum distortion for all fields at all distances is less than 3%.

Method of discontinuous optical glass optimization based on aberration correction in optical design

Optical glass selection is an important research object in optical design, which is an important way to aberration correction. However, these methods to our knowledge either do not correct aberration well or consume too much time. To efficiently solve the apochromatic problems in optical design, this paper presents what we believe to be a novel automatic optimization method for discontinuous optical glass based on auto glass selection (AGS). The method first calculates several aberrations related to glass materials in the optical system to select candidate optical glasses, which include longitudinal aberration, lateral chromatic aberration, and Petzval sum. It then skillfully explores the candidate optical glass list for the optimization of discontinuous glass. Using a flat-field apochromatic microscope and a wide-angle lens as examples, this method demonstrates its superiority in aberration correction and efficiency, can be automated optimization, requires relatively less computational effort, and achieves fast and stable convergence of results.
