In-situ detection of local avalanche breakdown and large magnetoresistance in Ag/SiO2/p-Si:B/SiO2/Ag device

Local avalanche breakdown in an Ag/SiO2/p-Si:B/SiO2/Ag device was successfully detected by an in-situ detection circuit, which was composed of a p-Si:B substrate, two p-Si:B/SiO2/Ag metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures formed on it, and a voltmeter. In our device, we observed a series of discharge peaks in the voltage-current curves which were corresponding to the generation of local plasmas in avalanche regimes. The generation of local plasmas led to a sudden increase in carriers concentration in the substrate which resulted in sudden voltage drops across the detection circuit, and then the MOS structures started to discharge which led to discharge peaks observed in V-I characteristics. More interesting, we found that the shape and amplitude of discharge peaks strongly depended on the setting of current steps of current source, owing to the discharging progresses. The avalanche breakdown based magnetoresistance (MR) effects were also studied. The value of MR in avalanche breakdown regime was about 40% which was two orders of magnitude higher than the MR value in other regimes. This work provides a simple and convenient method to explore the local avalanche breakdown effect and pave a way to acquire the MR effects based on avalanche breakdown.

Co-Ni-W-P Magnetic Films Electrolessly Deposited on Nitinol and the Application in Magnetically Targeted Therapy

Co-Ni-W-P magnetic films were electrolessly deposited on the nitinol wires. Their composition, microstructure, and magnetic properties were characterized by EDS, FESEM, and VSM. Their application in magnetically targeted therapy was investigated on animals. It was found that their composition and surface morphology can be controlled by the bath pH which can strongly influence the H _c , M _r , and BH _max . The magnetic nitinol wires with the Co-Ni-W-P films, combining with the magnetic nanoparticles containing 5-FU, were confirmed to be able to effectively inhibit the growth of tumors.

Solvent-mediated synthesis of magnetic Fe2O3 chestnut-like amorphous-core/γ-phase-shell hierarchical nanostructures with strong As(v) removal capability

In this paper, a magnetic adsorbent of iron oxide (Fe2O3) with a chestnut-like amorphous-core/γ-phase-shell hierarchical nanostructure (CAHN) has been synthesized in a rationally designed chemical reaction system, where the decomposition rate of Fe(CO)5 is controlled by the CO generated from the decomposition of N,N-dimethylformamide under the assistance of the hydrolysis of SnCl2·2H2O. By utilizing the current chemistry equilibrium dynamics, it is possible to kinetically modulate the nucleation and subsequent growth of Fe2O3 to form chestnut-like hierarchical nanostructures, in which single crystalline γ-Fe2O3 nanorods, with a diameter of 20 nm and a length of 300 nm, radially grow from the surfaces of amorphous and porous Fe2O3 sub-microspheres. The detailed possible formation mechanism of the Fe2O3 CAHNs is proposed according to the experimental results. The as-obtained Fe2O3 CAHNs show a strong adsorption capability for As(V), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 137.5 mg g−1, because of both the specific surface area, which can be as large as 143.12 m2 g−1, and the heterogeneous surface properties. Furthermore, their ferromagnetic properties make them easy to separate from water by magnetic separation. The adsorption process obeys the Freundlich isotherm model well, but not the Langmuir model, suggesting that a multilayered adsorption occurs on the surface of the Fe2O3 CAHNs. Our work may shed light on the design and preparation of high performance 3D hierarchically nanostructured adsorbents.

Magnetic Tuning of the Photovoltaic Effect in Silicon‐Based Schottky Junctions

A magnetic tuning of the photovoltaic effect is demonstrated for the Schottky junction formed by a ferromagnetic (FM) layer and silicon. Obvious anisotropic magnetic photovoltaic effects (AMV) are gained not only in the FM layer but also in the Si substrate though the latter is non-magnetic. Key factors determining the AMV of Si are identified.
