Existing And Future Satellite Systems For Marine Applications And Their Capabilities In The Indian Ocean Region

The ocean resources have gained lot of importance due to the rapid growth and urbanisation leading to large demands on resources. The ocean related studies have been hampered in the past due to lack of data. With the advent of remote sensing methods through satellite and aerial flying, the data coverage and accessibility have increased. Several parameters related to the oceans can be studied using satellite and aircraft data. The paper reviews the present availability of data from various satellites which are of relevant to the Indian Ocean region. The future scenario has been analysed and the possible data sources have been identified. For optimum exploitation of ocean resources it is necessary to have an information on the various components of ocean. The remote sensing technique has a vital role to play in such an oceanic information system.

Abstract Availability of speedy communication links to individuals and organizations is essential to keep pace with the business and social requirements of this modern age. While the PCs have been continuously growing in processing speed and memory capabilities, the availability of broadband communication links still has not been satisfactory in many parts of the world. Recognizing the need to give fillip to the growth of broadband services and improve the broadband penetration, the telecom policies of different counties have placed special emphasis on the same. While emphasis is on the use of fiber optic and copper in local loop, satellite communications systems will play an important role in quickly establishing these services in areas where fiber and other communication systems are not available and are not likely to be available for a long time to come. To make satellite communication systems attractive for the wide spread of these services in a cost effective way special emphasis has to be given on factors affecting the cost of the bandwidth and the equipment. As broadband services are bandwidth demanding, use of bandwidth efficient modulation technique and suitable system architecture are some of the important aspects that need to be examined. Further there is a need to re-look on how information services are provided keeping in view the user requirements and broadcast capability of satellite systems over wide areas. This paper addresses some of the aspects of delivering broadband services via satellite taking Indian requirement as an example.

Abstract Design and development of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite, IRS‐1A and the successful operation of the space and ground segments of IRS‐1A over the past three years form a major milestone in the Indian Remote Sensing Programme. Significant growth in Remote Sensing application/activities in almost all the sectors of natural resources survey and management, supply of various remote sensing data products to Indian users in turn around time of 8–10 days, development of remote sensing infrastructure at central/state user organisations for utilisation of remote sensing, indigenous development of various remote sensing interpretation equipments/ Image Processing Systems /Software, and continued user interaction and information dissemination are some of the major highlights of the Indian Remote Sensing Programme.
