The photochemical dynamics of the Ã 2A2 state of chlorine dioxide

This paper presents the Ã 2A2←X̃ 2B1 direct absorption spectrum of OClO recorded at rotational resolution in a cold molecular jet. Rotational temperatures as low as 30 K are achieved and result in substantial reduction of the inhomogeneous effects that congest the room temperature spectrum. No direct spectroscopic evidence is found for the 2A1←X̃ 2B1 perpendicular transition which was previously thought to be hidden under the stronger Ã 2A2←X 2B1 parallel transition. All of the modes of the 2A2 state observed display homogeneous rotational linewidth broadening. This broadening, due to the efficient excited state chemistry of the 2A2 state, is measured and modeled for the vibrational bands involving (v1,0,0), (v1,1,0) and (v1,0,2) for v1=4–10. We confirm the lack of rotational state dependence on the predissociation within a given vibrational band by a comparison of the linewidths obtained here at low J and K with those known at high J and K. For a given symmetric stretch band, the linewidths associated with both of the corresponding combinations of ν1 with the bend and asymmetric stretch are always greater than the symmetric stretch alone. Because of this and in view of the substantial drop in frequency of both ν2 and ν3 upon the transition we discuss the possible involvement of these modes with regard to the photoreactivity of the 2A2 state. In particular, from the higher energy lifetime information obtained here and the available photoproduct information, we address the dynamics of OClO in the 2A2 state with respect to couplings to both the 2A1 and 2B2 close-lying excited states.

Ozone loss from quasi‐conservative coordinate mapping during the 1999–2000 SOLVE/THESEO 2000 campaigns

Ozone observations made by the Airborne Raman Ozone, Temperature, and Aerosol Lidar (AROTEL) and Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) on board the NASA DC‐8 aircraft, the NOAA in situ instrument on board the NASA ER‐2 aircraft, and Third European Stratospheric Experiment on Ozone 2000 (THESEO 2000) ozonesondes are analyzed by applying a quasi‐conservative coordinate mapping technique. Measurements from the late winter/early spring SAGE III Ozone Loss and Validation Experiment (SOLVE) period (January through March 2000) are incorporated into a time‐varying composite field in a potential vorticity‐potential temperature coordinate space; ozone loss rates are calculated both with and without diabatic effects. The average loss rate from mid‐January to mid‐March near the 450 K isentropic surface in the polar vortex is found to be approximately 0.03 ppmv/d.

The Emerging Technological Revolution in Earth Observations

Abstract A technology revolution in Earth observation sensor design is occurring. This revolution in part is associated with the emergence of CubeSat platforms that have forced a de facto standardization on the volume and power into which sensors have to fit. The extent that small sensors can indeed provide similar or replacement capabilities compared to larger and more expensive counterparts has barely been demonstrated and any loss of capability of smaller systems weighed against the gains in costs and new potential capabilities offered by implementing them with a more distributed observing strategy also has not yet been embraced. This paper provides four examples of observations made with prototype miniaturized observing systems, including from CubeSats, that offer a glimpse of this emerging sensor revolution and a hint at future observing system design.

Version 2 of the TSIS‐1 Hybrid Solar Reference Spectrum and Extension to the Full Spectrum

Abstract This work describes two achievements to a key data set. First, we present version 2 of the Total and Spectral Solar Irradiance Sensor‐1 Hybrid Solar Reference Spectrum (TSIS‐1 HSRS), which has recently been recognized as a new solar irradiance reference standard ( https://calvalportal.ceos.org/ ). Second, we present a new “full spectrum extension” of the TSIS‐1 HSRS. The TSIS‐1 HSRS observational composite solar irradiance reference spectrum spans 0.202–2.730 μm and encompasses more than 97% of the energy in the total solar irradiance (TSI). Version 2 is an incremental update that corrects the radiometric baseline between 0.202 and 0.210 μm and updates the solar lines at wavelengths longward of 0.743 μm to those listed in the most recent database. The full spectrum extension builds off version 2 of the TSIS‐1 HSRS and supports applications that require a solar spectrum encompassing nearly 100% of the energy in the TSI. It spans 0.115–200 μm and was developed by incorporating additional observations and theoretical knowledge where no direct observations currently exist.

Law of mass action in the Arctic lower stratospheric polar vortex January–March 2000: ClO scaling and the calculation of ozone loss rates in a turbulent fractal medium

We consider the effects of power law scaling in the 1999–2000 Arctic lower stratospheric vortex from the point of view of the law of mass action and its application to the chemical kinetics of ozone loss embedded in a turbulent, macroscopic, fractal medium. The ER‐2 observations of ClO obey power law scaling; the exponent varies with time in a manner shown to be consistent with the scaling of NO y and O 3 , via the influences of polar stratospheric clouds and actinic solar radiation. While the microscopic rate coefficient for ClO three‐body recombination to the dimer applies as measured to three‐dimensional volumes in which the sole transport mechanism is molecular diffusion, this cannot be true in the 2.56‐dimensional space in which macroscopically fluctuating ClO reacts in the lower stratosphere. We show that the rate of loss of ozone via the ClO dimer mechanism is proportional to [ClO] 2.20 in late January/early February and to [ClO] 2.55 in March. Chemical ozone loss had already occurred by the date of the first flight, 20000120.

Evidence of the effect of summertime midlatitude convection on the subtropical lower stratosphere from CRYSTAL‐FACE tracer measurements

Trace gas and particle measurements taken during the CRYSTAL‐FACE mission are used to examine mixing in the summer subtropical lower stratosphere. Vigorous convection in the central and eastern United States injected a significant amount of tropospheric air into the lower stratosphere, which was subsequently advected over the region sampled during the CRYSTAL‐FACE mission. Aerosols produced by biomass burning were observed over Florida during a time period with a large number of forest fires in the western United States and eastern Canada, providing evidence of convective injection of tropospheric air into the lower stratosphere. The circumstances of the large‐scale flow pattern in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, vigorous summertime convection, abundant forest fires, and the downstream sampling allow a unique view of mixing in the lower stratosphere. We calculate the fractions of midlatitude tropospheric air in the sampled lower stratosphere and mixing rates on the basis of consistency between a number of tracer‐tracer correlations. The tropospheric endpoints to the mixing estimates give an indication of midlatitude continental convective input into the lower stratosphere. We also discuss the possible impact of summertime midlatitude convection on the composition of the stratosphere as a whole.
