Observing the scattering phase shift of isolated Kondo impurities at surfaces

The spin-flip scattering at Co adatoms on Ag(111) leads to the formation of a Kondo resonance. We determined the energy-dependent scattering phase shift of electrons scattering off single magnetic adatoms. A scanning tunneling microscope operating at 6 K was used to determine the amplitude of the Friedel oscillations created in the local density of states of the Ag(111) surface state electrons by the Co adatoms. We find that the standing-wave pattern around Co adsorbates exhibits a minimum in amplitude near ${E}_{F}$ of width ${2k}_{B}{T}_{K},$ where ${T}_{K}=92 \mathrm{K}$ is the Kondo temperature of the system. The wave pattern amplitude as a function of energy can be explained by assuming an energy-dependent phase shift for the scattering process.

Kondo Effect of Co Adatoms on Ag Monolayers on Noble Metal Surfaces

The Kondo temperature T K of single Co adatoms on monolayers of Ag on Cu and Au(111) is determined using Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy. T K of Co on a single monolayer of Ag on either substrate is essentially the same as that of Co on a homogenous Ag(111) crystal. Besides giving strong evidence that the interaction of surface Kondo impurities with the substrate is very local in nature the data show that the energy scale of the many-electron Kondo state is insensitive to the properties of surface states and to the energetic position of the projected bulk band edges. We demonstrate that the trend of the Kondo temperature of Co adatoms is correlated to the impurity's d-band shift as obtained from the Hammer and Nørskovs model of reactivity neglecting many-body effects.

Growth of Co Nanomagnet Arrays with Enhanced Magnetic Anisotropy

A trigon structure formed by submonolayer gadolinium deposition onto Au(111) is revealed as a robust growth template for Co nanodot arrays. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and X‐Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism measurements evidence that the Co nanoislands behave as independent magnetic entities with an out‐of‐plane easy axis of anisotropy and enhanced magnetic anisotropy values, as compared to other self‐organized Co nanodot superlattices. The large strain induced by the lattice mismatch at the interface between Co and trigons is discussed as the main reason for the increased magnetic anisotropy of the nanoislands.

Vibrational spectromicroscopy of graphite and carbon nanotubes

The vibrational properties of highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) and single wall carbon nanotubes have been probed locally with atomic scale resolution by Inelastic Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy (IETS). The observed spectral features are in very good agreement with the calculated vibrational density of states (vDOS). Furthermore, the high spatial resolution of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) has allowed the unraveling of changes in the local phonon spectrum related to topological defects.

Phonon Spectromicroscopy of Carbon Nanostructures with Atomic Resolution

The vibrational properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes have been probed locally with atomic-scale resolution by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy with a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The high spatial resolution has allowed the unraveling of changes in the local phonon spectrum related to topological defects. We demonstrated that the radial breathing mode is suppressed within tube segments of lengths below approximately 3 nm, and that in the cap region phonon modes characteristic of the fullerene hemisphere are emerging. Phonon spectromicroscopy should lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms that limit the transport of heat or electrical charge inside nanostructured carbon materials.

Kondo Effect in Single Atom Contacts: The Importance of the Atomic Geometry

Co single atom junctions on copper surfaces are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations. The Kondo temperature of single cobalt atoms on the Cu(111) surface has been measured at various tip-sample distances ranging from tunneling to the point contact regime. The experiments show a constant Kondo temperature for a whole range of tip-substrate distances consistently with the predicted energy position of the spin-polarized $d$ levels of Co. This is in striking difference to experiments on $\mathrm{Co}/\mathrm{Cu}(100)$ junctions, where a substantial increase of the Kondo temperature has been found. Our calculations reveal that the different behavior of the Co adatoms on the two Cu surfaces originates from the interplay between the structural relaxations and the electronic properties in the near-contact regime.

High Temperature Ferromagnetism in a GdAg₂Monolayer

Materials that exhibit ferromagnetism, interfacial stability, and tunability are highly desired for the realization of emerging magnetoelectronic phenomena in heterostructures. Here we present the GdAg2 monolayer alloy, which possesses all such qualities. By combining X-ray absorption, Kerr effect, and angle-resolved photoemission with ab initio calculations, we have investigated the ferromagnetic nature of this class of Gd-based alloys. The Curie temperature can increase from 19 K in GdAu2 to a remarkably high 85 K in GdAg2. We find that the exchange coupling between Gd atoms is barely affected by their full coordination with noble metal atoms, and instead, magnetic coupling is effectively mediated by noble metal–Gd hybrid s,p–d bands. The direct comparison between isostructural GdAu2 and GdAg2 monolayers explains how the higher degree of surface confinement and electron occupation of such hybrid s,p–d bands promote the high Curie temperature in the latter. Finally, the chemical composition and structural robustness of the GdAg2 alloy has been demonstrated by interfacing them with organic semiconductors or magnetic nanodots. These results encourage systematic investigations of rare-earth/noble metal surface alloys and interfaces, in order to exploit them in magnetoelectronic applications.
