Bubble motion and size variation during thermal migration with phase change

An analysis of the motion of a spherical bubble in a two-phase (fluid-fluid), single component system with a vertical linear temperature gradient is presented. The model for the migration of an immiscible bubble under the effects of buoyancy and thermocapillarity, considered by Young et al. [“The motion of bubbles in a vertical temperature gradient,” J. Fluid Mech. 6, 350–356 (1959)], is modified to allow for phase change at the bubble surface. We allow the possibility of both translation of the bubble in the vertical direction and the change of bubble radius with time. Depending on the material parameters, the thermocapillary and buoyancy effects that govern the migration of an immiscible bubble can be overwhelmed by the effects of latent heat generation, resulting in a change in the mechanism driving the motion. For a water-steam system, conditions are determined for a stationary bubble in which the effects of buoyancy and thermal migration are balanced. The linear stability of the bubble is considered, and conditions are determined that correspond to small-amplitude oscillations of the position and radius of the bubble. A weakly nonlinear analysis of the solution in the vicinity of the unstable solution is performed, and the results are compared with a numerical solution of the nonlinear equations.

Convection During Unidirectional Solidification

The fluid flow and solute segregation which occur during directional solidification, including effects of gravity and microgravity were studied. The nature of the fluid flow, its effects on the shape of the crystal-metal interface and the resulting distribution of solutes are examined. During solidification of a binary alloy at constant velocity vertically upwards, thermosolutal convection occurs if the solute rejection or preferential incorporation at the crystal-melt interface decreases the density of the melt. Numerical calculations of the solute, temperature, and flow fields are carried out by using previously developed algorithms for Schmidt numbers Sc = 1, 10, 81. The time periodic flow, which occurs over a narrow range of parameters, is investigated.

The results of numerical computations of the electro- static potential and the effective diffusion constant of counterions in a polyelectrolyte solution are given.The potentials for various poly ion charge densities and polyion sizes are presented graphically.The cal- culated diffusion constants are compared with experi- mental data on the diffusion of labeled sodium ions in polyacrylic acid-sodium hydroxide solutions.1.

Transport Coefficients of Composite Materials

The problem of the effective conductivity of a composite material whose local conductivity is a function of position is treated. Using the analogy between this problem and the diffusion of ions in a periodic potential, previously obtained variational results are used to obtain upper and lower bounds for the effective conductivity. These bounds are shown to be the conductivities obtained in certain commonly used equivalent circuit approximations. Although the discussion in the paper is in terms of the electrical conductivity, the theory is equally applicable to other transport coefficients, such as the heat conductivity and the diffusion constant, as well as to a class of response functions such as the magnetic permeability and dielectric constant.
