Mobile-based wide area pest surveillance and advisory services for horticultural crops in Haryana

The development and implementation of ICT based pest monitoring and advisory system was an innovative idea to speed up the process of providing timely and correct pest management advice to the farmers. The system captured a total of 20,754 pest incidence, recorded through pest-specific scientific methods during 2018–20 and produced reports of pest status in farmer fields vis-a-vis pest ETL. Based on these pest reports, experts submitted 1,971 pest management advisories into the system which were disseminated to 7000 registered farmers of 9 districts of the state, through 4,49,465 SMSs during the years. The timely availability of correct pest management information greatly helped in minimising crop losses. The system also helped in the quick identification of pest hot spot areas and thus preparing the state agencies to effectively manage the pest problems in those areas. This also helped in the promotion and awareness of integrated pest management among the farmers. Implementation of appropriate pest management strategies by the farmers led to increasing in crop yield and avoidance of pest epidemics during the period. Besides, the system created a centralised pest data repository which could be utilised for drawing inferences in future. Such a database combined with a weather database could be a potential source for the development of forewarning models of insects and diseases.

Studies on Aerobic Bacterial Flora Associated with Postpartum Subclinical Endometritis in Crossbred Dairy Cows

A clinical study was conducted with the objective to isolate and identify the uterine aerobic bacteria in crossbred dairy cows with postpartum subclinical endometritis (SCE). One hundred and ninety four recently calved cows from different organized dairy farms in and around the city of Bangalore were screened for SCE by endometrial cytology using cytobrush technique on 35 day postpartum (dpp) from the cows. Uterine samples were collected from the cows found positive (98) for SCE using endometrial cytobrush for aerobic bacterial culture. Either single isolate (42.16 per cent) or mixed isolates (57.83 per cent) were isolated from the uterus in 83 out of 98 cows with SCE. The most common single isolate observed was Escherichia coli (45.71 per cent) in 16 out of 35 cows followed by Staphylococcus (42.86 per cent), Proteus spp. and Enterobacter sp. (5.71 per cent). Whereas, E. coli + Staphylococcus sp. were isolated as mixed isolates in 32 (66.67 per cent) out of 48 cows followed byE. Coli + Proteus in 11 cows, E. coli + Staphylococcus and E. coli + Enterobacter sp. in one cow each besides three cows (6.25 per cent) with more than three different isolates. In the present study, E. coli was the most frequently isolated aerobic bacteria either as single isolate or as mixed isolate with other aerobic bacteria in crossbred dairy cows at 35 dpp with SCE.

Rice black bug Scotinophara lurida (Burmeister) (Podopidae: Hemiptera) is an emerging insect pest on rice in Cauvery Delta region of Tamil Nadu and their abundance in light trap is a measure of theiractivity. S.luridamonitored using light trap at Aduthurai (Tamil Nadu) duringkharifof 2013-2016 indicated their mean and peak populations (nos/trap/week) as 119, 3822, 1243 and 414 and 800, 60083, 23808 and 6564 in respect of 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. While onset of populationin 2014 and 2015was during July 1stweek, 2013 had onset in July IIndweek. Peak emergence varied between 30 and 34 standard meteorological weeks (July III to August IIIrdweeks). The peak abundance ofS. luridawas higher whenever pre-kharifabundance was high. Aestivation coincided with second fortnight of June during 2014 and 2015 as against mid-June to first week of July and last week of June till mid-July during 2013 and 2016, respectively. Climatic variability in terms of reduced minimum temperature and increased rains on many rainy days duringJuly-August had a profound effect onS.luridaabundance. Deployment of additional light traps during July and August followed by proper destruction of adult collections must be encouraged for their management. Long-term management strategies of black bugs should incorporate compulsory crop rotation with a pulse crop during summer with focus on off-season management of aestivating stages of black bugs in rice stubbles and along field bunds

Results of the studies revealed that A 2 mating type continued to remain dominant in hilly areas while A1 was still dominant in sub-tropical plains. Resistance to metalaxyl had crossed the threshold level at most of the places studied. Frequency of 11 gene complex race 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10.11 was highest at all the places.

The integrated approach which includes use of disease free seed, 3% boric acid as tuber spray, soil application of gypsum @ 15 q/ha along with fertilizer before planting, light irrigation at 15-20 days interval, soil pulverization, hot weather cultivation (HWC), harvesting within 20 days after dehaulming and potato based crop rotation-Potato-HWC: GM-Potato proved to be the best for managing the black scurf disease of potato. The above-integrated management reduced the disease incidence from 71.2% (control)to 4.8% and population buildup from 5x107 to 0x10 2 propagules/g soil.

FIELD RESPONSE OF THREE FOREST TREE SEEDLINGS TO INOCULATION WITH VAMF

SUMMARY The response of Acacia nilotica, Casuarina equisetifolia and Leucaena leu cocephala to inoculation with VAMF under field conditions was investigated in a P deficient oxisol. The best VAMF for each species yielded a biomass increase of 36, 39 and 41 per cent over control. The highest per cent colonisation was 53, 53 and 58 for the three species respectively.

Prediction of early blight severity in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) by machine learning technique

Study of scenario and weather based prediction of severity of early blight (Alternaria solani Ell. & Mart) on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) for five Indian states, viz. Rajendranagar (Telangana), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Rahuri (Maharashtra), Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and Ludhiana (Punjab) was made using advanced statistical method of support vector regression (SVR) with its accuracy compared with conventional multiple linear regression (MLR) model. Comparisons of early blight severity for mean and maximum severity levels across seasons for each location was carried out using Duncanâ€™s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Early blight mean and maximum severity levels were in order: Bengaluru (KA) > Rajendranagar (TS) > Rahuri (MH) > Raipur (CG) > Ludhiana (PB). Ludhiana (PB) had nil incidence during 2015 and not greater than 5% of either mean or maximum severity in any season. Both minimum temperature and morning relative humidity of one and two lagged weeks had negative and positive influence respectively, on mean and maximum severity of early blight at Rajendranagar (TS), Bengaluru (KA) and Rahuri (MH), which had higher blight severity over Raipur (CG) and Ludhiana (PB). MLR indicated 22â€“56% and 21â€“61% of variability with respect to mean and maximum severity of early blight due to weather factors that varied with locations. SVR predicted early blight severity nearer to actual values over MLR in terms of goodness of fit as well as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE).
