Precise laser trimming of alloy strip resistor: A comparative study with femtosecond laser and nanosecond laser

Laser trimming has become one of the powerful tools for precise manufacturing of alloy resistors that are widely used in electrical vehicles, electrical controlling, and in appliances. In this work, the influence of femtosecond laser trimming is compared with nanosecond laser trimming. The authors found that lasers focused on different heights relative to the sample surface induced significant changes in surface morphologies. The resistance change was systematically investigated as a function of cutting lengths and cutting depths of different laser powers for both lasers. The experiments display that femtosecond laser trimming has a higher precision of the resistance adjustment than nanosecond laser trimming. The periodic ripple structure by the femtosecond laser was investigated at the focus position above, onto, or beneath the surface. The period of a low frequency ripple structure (LFRS) on the ablated groove bottom is about 600–700 nm when the laser focuses just right on the surface but changes to 490–560 nm when focusing above or beneath the surface. The period of a high frequency ripple structure is about 100–380 nm at the vertical direction of LFRS. The period of low frequency ripple on the outside of the groove is smaller than that on the groove bottom for all three focusing cases. The period of the LFRS is not sensitive to the laser power. The range of the resistor value change in the s-polarized light direction of the femtosecond laser is more than that in the p-polarized light direction.

Laser-Direct Writing of Silver Metal Electrodes on Transparent Flexible Substrates with High-Bonding Strength

We demonstrate a novel approach to rapidly fabricate conductive silver electrodes on transparent flexible substrates with high-bonding strength by laser-direct writing. A new type of silver ink composed of silver nitrate, sodium citrate, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was prepared in this work. The role of PVP was elucidated for improving the quality of silver electrodes. Silver nanoparticles and sintered microstructures were simultaneously synthesized and patterned on a substrate using a focused 405 nm continuous wave laser. The writing was completed through the transparent flexible substrate with a programmed 2D scanning sample stage. Silver electrodes fabricated by this approach exhibit a remarkable bonding strength, which can withstand an adhesive tape test at least 50 times. After a 1500 time bending test, the resistance only increased 5.2%. With laser-induced in-situ synthesis, sintering, and simultaneous patterning of silver nanoparticles, this technology is promising for the facile fabrication of conducting electronic devices on flexible substrates.

Recent Advances in the Fabrication of Highly Sensitive Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates: Nanomolar to Attomolar Level Sensing

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) techniques have rapidly advanced over the last two decades, permitting multidisciplinary trace analyses and the potential detection of single molecules. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent progress in strategies for the fabrication of highly sensitive SERS substrates, as a means of achieving sensing on the attomolar scale. The review examines widely used performance criteria, such as enhancement factors. In addition, femtosecond laser-based techniques are discussed as a versatile tool for the fabrication of SERS substrates. Several approaches for enhancing the performance of SERS sensing devices are also introduced, including photo-induced, transient, and liquid-interface assisted strategies. Finally, substrates for real-time sensing and biological applications are also reviewed to demonstrate the powerful analytical capabilities of these methods and the significant progress in SERS research.

Research of Epoxy Resin Modified by Polyether Imidazole Ionic Liquid

Polyether imidazole ionic liquid (PIIL) was blended with general-purpose epoxy resin (EP). PIIL/EP was cured by ethylenediamine curing agent. The structure of PIIL/EP was determined by FTIR. The effect of the content of PIIL on the impact strength of EP was studied. The toughness of epoxy resin could be significantly improved by PIIL. The impact strength of the modified EP was improved with the increase of PIIL and leveled off when the content of PIIL was more than 45%, and the modified EP showed rubber elasticity obviously.

Label-free trace detection of bio-molecules by liquid-interface assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering using a microfluidic chip

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), owing to its high sensitivity based on localized surface plasmon resonance of nanostructured metals, is recently attracting much attention to be used for biotechnology, such as cell imaging and tumor therapy. On the other hand, the trace detection of bio-molecules with large molecular weight is still challenging because the troublesome treatment of SERS substrate using coupling or cross-linking agents is required. In this paper, we apply liquid interface assisted SERS (LI-SERS) method, which provides unique features of collection and self-immobilization of analyte molecules on the SERS substrate, to realize the label-free trace detection of bio-molecules with detection limits of pM ~ fM. Specifically, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) discrimination and quantitative detection of β-Amyloid (Aβ) in trace-concentration are demonstrated to illustrate the ultrahigh sensitivity and versatility of the LI-SERS method. The results suggest LI-SERS is promising for the early-stage diagnosis of diseases such as virus infection and Alzheimer's disease.

Facile synthesis and fractal feature of pH-responsive poly(acrylic acid) hollow microspheres for ibuprofen delivery

The pH-responsive hollow poly(acrylic acid) (HPAA) microspheres with regulated cavity structure and various shell thicknesses were synthesized. Their structural parameters and textural properties were characterized by various techniques. The ibuprofen loading results indicate the good drug loading capabilities of HPAA microspheres from 13.81 to 17.18%. Their ibuprofen release properties demonstrated their good pH sensitivity and distance-controlled drug diffusion process. Specially, the small-angle X-ray scattering technique was used to suggest the surface roughness and structural irregularities of HPAA before and after drug loading and releasing. These findings clearly indicate the potential of HPAA microspheres to be used as promising candidates in drug delivery.

Two-dimensional laser-induced periodic surface structures formed on crystalline silicon by GHz burst mode femtosecond laser pulses

Abstract Femtosecond laser pulses with GHz burst mode that consist of a series of trains of ultrashort laser pulses with a pulse interval of several hundred picoseconds offer distinct features in material processing that cannot be obtained by the conventional irradiation scheme of femtosecond laser pulses (single-pulse mode). However, most studies using the GHz burst mode femtosecond laser pulses focus on ablation of materials to achieve high-efficiency and high-quality material removal. In this study, we explore the ability of the GHz burst mode femtosecond laser processing to form laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on silicon. It is well known that the direction of LIPSS formed by the single-pulse mode with linearly polarized laser pulses is typically perpendicular to the laser polarization direction. In contrast, we find that the GHz burst mode femtosecond laser (wavelength: 1030 nm, intra-pulse duration: 220 fs, intra-pulse interval time (intra-pulse repetition rate): 205 ps (4.88 GHz), burst pulse repetition rate: 200 kHz) creates unique two-dimensional (2D) LIPSS. We regard the formation mechanism of 2D LIPSS as the synergetic contribution of the electromagnetic mechanism and the hydrodynamic mechanism. Specifically, generation of hot spots with highly enhanced electric fields by the localized surface plasmon resonance of subsequent pulses in the bursts within the nanogrooves of one-dimensional LIPSS formed by the preceding pulses creates 2D LIPSS. Additionally, hydrodynamic instability including convection flow determines the final structure of 2D LIPSS.
