Preparation and Characterization of Polymeric Surfactants Based on Epoxidized Soybean Oil Grafted Hydroxyethyl Cellulose

Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) grafted hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) was prepared via ring-opening polymerization, in which the hydroxyl groups of HEC acted as initiators and the polymeric ESO were covalently bonded to the HEC. Hydrolysis of ESO-grafted HEC (ESO-HEC) was performed with sodium hydroxide, and the hydrolyzed ESO-HEC (H-ESO-HEC) products were characterized via Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, high-temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that ring-opening polymerization of ESO occurred with the hydroxyl groups of HEC as initiators. The molecular weights of the H-ESO-HEC products were varied by adjusting the mass ratio of HEC and ESO. Through neutralizing the carboxylic acid of H-ESO-HEC with sodium hydroxide, novel polymeric surfactants (H-ESO-HEC-Na) were obtained, and the effects of polymeric surfactants on the surface tension of water were investigated as a function of concentration of H-ESO-HEC-Na. The H-ESO-HEC-Na was effective at lowering the surface tension of water to 26.33 mN/m, and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) value decreased from 1.053 to 0.157 g/L with increases in molecular weights of the polymeric surfactants. Rheological measurements indicated that the H-ESO-HEC-Na solutions changed from pseudoplastic property to Newtonian with increasing shear rate.

Preparation and properties of room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber based on rosin-grafted polydimethylsiloxane

Rosin-grafted polydimethylsiloxane (RGSO) was prepared via ring-opening reaction of glycidyl ester of rosin acid (ER) with hydroxy-terminated amino polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The structure of RGSO was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The effects of ER on relative molecular weight and rheological properties of RGSO were studied by gel permeation chromatography and rotational rheometry. Then, room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber modified with rosin was prepared using RGSO, hydroxy-terminated PDMS, tetraethoxysilane, and organotin catalyst. The structures and properties of RTV silicone rubbers were studied by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, a universal testing machine and dynamic mechanical analysis. The rosin-modified silicone rubber showed remarkably improved thermal and mechanical properties. Temperatures corresponding to 10% weight loss and maximum rate of weight loss increased by 66 °C and 177 °C, respectively. Moreover, the tensile strength and elongation at break increased by 138% and 113%. The role of rosin structure in improvement of properties is discussed.

Preparation of Salicylic Nitrile through Direct Catalytic Dehydration of Salicylamide with Immobilized Phosphoric Acid as Catalyst

Salicylic nitrile was prepared through direct catalytic dehydration of salicylamide under high temperature using immobilized phosphoric acid as catalyst. The catalytic performances of different catalysts were evaluated according to the analytic results of GC-MS, and the feasibility about the preparation of salicylic nitrile by direct catalytic dehydration of salicylamide was investigated according to the composition of product determinated by GC analysis (area nomalization). Experimental results indicated the comprehensive property of silica gel supported phosphoric acid was the best one among all of the catalysts utilized in this study. When the temperature of catalyst bed was 480 ± 10º and silica gel supported phosphoric acid was utilized as catalyst, the conversion ratio of salicylamide was 88.79%, the selectivity to salicylic nitrile was 97.97% and the yields of salicylic nitrile could up to 86.99%. Meanwhile, the experimental results showed the increase of temperature of catalyst bed could result in the increase of the conversation of salicylamide, but much more by-product could be formed when the temperature of catalyst bed was too high.

Preparation of dehydroabietyl polyethylene glycol aldehyde modified hydroxyethyl chitosans and their physicochemical properties

A series of polymeric surfactants based on monodehydroabietyl polyoxyethylene(5) ether (DHA(EO)5H) and hydroxyethyl chitosan (HEC) were prepared through a three-step process. First, DHA(EO)5H was oxidized using activated MnO2 and transformed into dehydroabietyl polyethylene glycol(5) aldehyde (DHA(EO)4CH2CHO). Then, the DHA(EO)4CH2CHO was reacted with HEC and converted into Schiff-base. Finally, the polymeric surfactant, DHA(EO)4CH2CHO modified HEC (DHA(EO)4CH2CHO-m-HEC), was obtained by reducing the Schiff-base with sodium borohydride. The grafting degree (DG) of DHA(EO)4CH2CHO substitution onto HEC for DHA(EO)4CH2CHO-m-HECs was determined using elemental analysis (EA), and the surface activities and foam performance of DHA(EO)4CH2CHO-m-HECs in aqueous solution were investigated respectively. The emulsifying capacities of DHA(EO)4CH2CHO-m-HECs were evaluated according to the stability times of emulsion composed of water and liquid paraffin. The experimental results showed the DG could have significant influence on the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of DHA(EO)4CH2CHO-m-HECs and their surface tensions at cmc (γcmc), but nearly no effect on their minimum surface tensions (γmin) in aqueous solution. Among the synthetic polymeric surfactants in this investigation, DHA(EO)4CH2CHO-m-HEC with DG of 56.95% exhibited the best emulsification and foam properties.
