Tailoring T-Duality Beyond the First Loop

In this article we review a recent calculation of the two-loop -model corrections to the T -duality map in string theory. Using the eective action approach, and focusing on backgrounds with a single Abelian isometry, we give the O( 0 ) modications of the lowest-order duality transformations. The torsion plays an important role in the theory to O( 0 ), because of the Chern-Simons couplings to the gauge elds that arise via dimensional reduction.

Signatures of supermassive charged gravitinos in liquid scintillator detectors

In previous work two of the present authors have suggested possible experimental ways to search for stable supermassive particles with electric charges of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ in upcoming underground experiments and the new JUNO observatory in particular [K.A. Meissner and H. Nicolai, Eur. Phys. J. C {\bf 84}, 269 (2024)]. In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the specific signature of such gravitino-induced events for the JUNO detector. The proposed method of detection relies on the `glow' produced by photons during the passage of such particles through the detector liquid, which would last for about a few to a few hundred microseconds depending on its velocity and the track. The cross sections for electronic excitation of the main component of the scintillator liquid, namely linear alkylbenzene (LAB), by the passing gravitino, are evaluated using quantum-chemical methods. The results show that, if such particles exist, the resulting signals would lead to a unique and unmistakable signature, for which we present event simulations as they would be seen by the JUNO photomultipliers. Our analysis brings together two very different research areas, namely fundamental particles physics and the search for a fundamental theory on the one hand, and methods of advanced quantum chemistry on the other.

Two-loop RGE of a general renormalizable Yang-Mills theory in a renormalization scheme with an explicit UV cutoff

We perform a systematic one-loop renormalization of a general renormalizable Yang-Mills theory coupled to scalars and fermions using a regularization scheme with a smooth momentum cutoff Λ (implemented through an exponential damping factor). We construct the necessary finite counterterms restoring the BRST invariance of the effective action by analyzing the relevant Slavnov-Taylor identities. We find the relation between the renormalized parameters in our scheme and in the conventional $$ \overline{\mathrm{MS}} $$ scheme which allow us to obtain the explicit two-loop renormalization group equations in our scheme from the known two-loop ones in the $$ \overline{\mathrm{MS}} $$ scheme. We calculate in our scheme the divergences of two-loop vacuum graphs in the presence of a constant scalar background field which allow us to rederive the two-loop beta functions for parameters of the scalar potential. We also prove that consistent application of the proposed regularization leads to counterterms which, together with the original action, combine to a bare action expressed in terms of bare parameters. This, together with treating Λ as an intrinsic scale of a hypothetical underlying finite theory of all interactions, offers a possibility of an unconventional solution to the hierarchy problem if no intermediate scales between the electroweak scale and the Planck scale exist.

We take a new look at the DeWitt equation, a defining equation for the effective action functional in quantum field theory. We present a formal solution to this equation and discuss the equation in various contexts, and in particular for models where it can be made completely well defined, such as the Wess-Zumino model in two dimensions.

Supermassive gravitinos and giant primordial black holes

We argue that the stable (color-singlet) supermassive gravitinos proposed in our previous work can serve as seeds for giant primordial black holes. These seeds are hypothesized to start out as tightly bound states of fractionally charged gravitinos in the radiation-dominated era, whose formation is supported by the universally attractive combination of gravitational and electric forces between the gravitinos and antigravitinos (reflecting their ``almost BPS-like'' nature). When lumps of such bound states coalesce and undergo gravitational collapse, the resulting mini black holes can escape Hawking evaporation if the radiation temperature exceeds the Hawking temperature. Subsequently the black holes evolve according to an exact solution of Einstein's equations, to emerge as macroscopic black holes in the transition to the matter-dominated era, with masses on the order of the solar mass or larger. The presence of these seeds at such an early time provides ample time for further accretion of matter and radiation, and would imply the existence of black holes of almost any size in the Universe, up to the observed maximum.

Ising Model with a Magnetic Field

Abstract The paper presents the low temperature expansion of the 2D Ising model in the presence of the magnetic field in powers of $$x=\exp (-J/(kT))$$ x = exp ( - J / ( k T ) ) and $$z=\exp (B/(kT))$$ z = exp ( B / ( k T ) ) with full polynomials in z up to $$x^{88}$$ x 88 and full polynomials in $$x^4$$ x 4 up to $$z^{-60}$$ z - 60 , in the latter case the polynomials are explicitly given. The new result presented in the paper is an expansion not in inverse powers of z but in $$(z^2+x^8)^{-k}$$ ( z 2 + x 8 ) - k where the subsequent coefficients (polynomials in $$x^4$$ x 4 ) turn out to be divisible by increasing powers of $$(1-x^4)$$ ( 1 - x 4 ) . This result gives a hint about the intriguing ‘off-diagonal’ correlations in the Ising model mixing the $$B\ne 0$$ B ≠ 0 contributions with the usual low temperature $$B=0$$ B = 0 expansion what may be useful on the road to find the full analytic expression for the partition function of the Ising model with non-vanishing magnetic field. The paper describes both the analytic expansions of the partition function and the efficient combinatorial methods to get the coefficients of the expansion.
