Jetting Dynamics of Burning Gel Fuel Droplets

Jetting in burning gel fuel droplets is an important process which, in addition to pure vaporization, enables the convective transport of unreacted fuel vapors from the droplet interior to the flame envelope. This aids in accelerating the fuel efflux and enhancing the mixing of the gas phase, which improves the droplet burn rates. In this study, Schlieren imaging was used to characterize different jetting dynamics that govern the combustion behavior of organic-gellant-laden ethanol gel fuel droplets. To initiate jetting, the gellant shell of the burning gel fuel droplet was subjected to either oscillatory bursting or isolated bursting, or both. However, irrespective of the jetting mode, the jets interacted with the flame envelope in one of three possible ways. Based on the velocity and the degree to which a jet disrupts the flame envelope, it is classified as either a flame distortion, a fire ball outside the flame or a pin hole jet (localized flame extinction), where the pin hole jets have the highest velocity (1000–1550 mm/s), while the flame distortion events have the lowest velocity (500–870 mm/s). Subsequently, the relative number of the three types of jetting events during the droplet lifetime was analyzed as a function of the type of organic gellant. It was demonstrated that the combustion behavior of gel fuels (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose: HPMC at 3 wt.%) that tend to form thin-weak-flexible shells is dominated by low-velocity flame distortion events, while the gel fuels (methylcellulose: MC at 9 wt.%) that facilitate the formation of thick-strong-rigid shells are governed by high-velocity fire ball and pin hole jets. Overall, this study provides critical insights into the jetting behavior and its characterization, which can help us to tune the droplet gasification and the gas phase mixing to achieve an effective combustion control strategy for gel fuels.

Numerical analysis of WaveOne Gold and 2Shape endodontic files during root canal treatment

This study aims to develop and analyse a finite element model of the endodontic nickel-titanium (NiTi) instrument during the root canal treatment (RCT). The 3D model of the tooth and the endodontic instrument has been created using computer-aided design software. The nonlinear explicit dynamic analysis in the CAE package (ANSYS) has been used to analyse the mechanical behaviour of endodontic instruments such as total deformation, equivalent elastic strain, and equivalent stress during canal preparation. The mechanical behaviour of three commercially available endodontic NiTi alloy instruments such as WaveOne Gold (WOG), 2Shape 1 (TS1) and 2Shape 2 (TS2) endodontic files was evaluated using FEA. Consequently, the effect of deformation, equivalent stress and equivalent elastic strain on endodontic files during cleaning and shaping are investigated and compared. The results show that the total deformation and equivalent elastic strain are maximum in the TS1 endodontic file in comparison to TS2 and WOG files.

On comprehensive analysis of root canal shaping ability of three endodontic files of different kinematics

Infection of the tooth’s root canal requires what is called root canal treatment (RTC). The most important part of endodontic treatment is to shape the root canal and remove its infected portion using endodontic files of various protocols, kinematics and designs that suit the particular geometry. Cleaning and Shaping the canal efficiently remove the root canal bacterial biofilms or tissue remnants while keeping its natural geometry. The result is determined by shaping the ability of the relevant endodontic file. In the available literature, no norm has been established for the measurement of various endodontic files’ ability to do effective shaping. We present in this study a method to analyse and measure the shaping ability of endodontic files of three different kinematics.

Failure Analysis of a Grease-Lubricated Cylindrical Roller Bearing

Cylindrical roller bearings are commonly used in aircraft power transmission, machine tools, steel industries and others due to their precision and high load carrying capacity. In present study, an experimental test rig has been developed to investigate the wear in roller bearing. The changes in micro-geometry of the bearing components have been observed through scanning electron microscope. Some major cracks have been found over the inner race surface. Solid debris particles, removed from the inner race surface, further damage the other bearing surfaces. The lubricating grease has been also failed to provide elastohydrodynamic lubrication between the inner race and rollers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has been applied to examine the degradation of the lubricating grease. Influence of temperature, misalignments and roughness on the specific lubricant film thickness is discussed. Results show an impact of these parameters on roughness of bearing components.

Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) establishes a communication channel between brain and external world. BCI can control numerous applications, such as controlling a cursor on computer screen, movement of a robotic arm or a wheel chair and many more. The efficiency and accuracy of BCI systems completely relies on efficient preprocessing and classification algorithms. In present work, the reliability of a BCI has been analysed, which is implemented using Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, recorded from motor imagery, for imagination of three different mental tasks: left fist blink, right fist blink and both fists blink. The recorded EEG signals were primarily filtered out by a low pass Butterworth filter and further preprocessed using multiscale principal component analysis. Statistical parameters have been calculated from preprocessed EEG signals as features. For classification of the EEG signals, support vector machine model is employed.

A comparative study for the selection of an entropy technique to classify bearing faults

The diagnosis of faults in ball bearings has been a major challenge especially in the non-stationary environment. This paper presents a comparative study to select a method among the approximate entropy, Sample entropy and Multi-Scale entropy that can successfully be employed as a feature vector for fault classification of ball bearings. The acquired vibration signals from the normal and faulty condition of ball bearing are firstly de-noised and then disintegrated by Ensemble empirical mode decomposition method to various intrinsic mode decompositions. From selected intrinsic mode functions the signals are reconstructed and entropies are computed by the proposed methods. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the Multi-scale entropy technique been able to effectively differentiate the condition of bearing and can be considered to act as an important fault feature vector.
