Fabrication of CaFe₂O₄ nanofibers via electrospinning method with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

CaFe 2 O 4 nanofibers with diameters of about 130[Formula: see text]nm have been fabricated via a facile electrospinning method. The structures, morphologies and optical properties of the obtained CaF 2 O 4 nanofibers have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–Visible UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum. The photocatalytic activities of the CaFe 2 O 4 nanofibers are evaluated by the photo-degradation of Methyl orange (MO). The results show that the CaFe 2 O 4 nanofibers (72%) exhibit much higher photocatalytic performance than the CaFe 2 O 4 powders (27%) prepared by conventional method under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of CaFe 2 O 4 nanofibers could be attributed to the large surface area, high photogenerated charge carriers density and low charge transfer resistance, as revealed by photoelectrochemical measurement. And fundamentally, it could be attributed to the decreased particle size and the fibrous nanostructure. This work not only provides an efficient way to improve the photocatalytic activity of CaFe 2 O 4 , but also provides a new method for preparing materials with nanofibrous structure.

One-pot synthesis of three-dimensional silver-embedded porous silicon micronparticles for lithium-ion batteries

Three-dimensional silver-embedded porous silicon (3D Ag@porous silicon) micronparticles were synthesized by a facile and low cost method via a metal-assisted chemical etching process for the first time. The electrode based on this 3D Ag@porous silicon anode material reveals a significant improvement in the electrochemical performance that results from its unique interconnected 3D network structure and the existence of high conductive silver nanoparticles encapsulated in the matrix of porous silicon. The battery based on 3D Ag@porous silicon micronparticles still retains a discharge capacity of 784 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles, which is more than two times larger compared with that of graphite (∼372 mA h g−1). These results suggest that this facile and low cost methodology for preparation of a porous silicon anode can be extended to industrial production.

Five three/two-fold interpenetrating architectures from self-assembly of fluorene-2,7-dicarboxylic acid derivatives and d10 metals

Five new three/two-fold interpenetrated coordination polymers, namely, [Cd(mfda)(L1)] (1), [Cd(efda)(L1)] (2), [Zn2(mfda)2(L2)]·DMF·H2O (3), [Zn2(efda)2(L2)]·(DMF)0.25, (4) and [Cd2(mfda)2(L2)2]·DMF·H2O (5) (H2mfda = 9,9-dimethylfluorene-2,7-dicarboxylic acid, H2efda = 9,9-diethylfluorene-2,7-dicarboxylic acid, L1 = Methylene bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazole) and L2 = 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene), have been synthesized under solvent-thermal conditions with mixed ligands. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and possess two-dimensional (6, 3) layered structures containing two kinds of rings. Three equivalent (6, 3) net interpenetrate in a parallel fashion to form an unprecedented mat-like 2D sheet. Compounds 3 and 4 are almost identical in structure and display threefold interpenetrating α–Po net structures. Compound 5 displays a twofold interpenetrated 3D 6-connected net with α–Po topology. The luminescent properties of these compounds have been studied in the solid state at room temperature.

Tuning the shape and thermoelectric property of PbTe nanocrystals by bismuth doping

We report the synthesis of a series of monodispersed Bi-doped PbTe nanocrystals with tunable morphologies by using a doping precursor of bismuth(III) 2-ethylhexanoate. The as-synthesized Pb1−xBixTe (x = 0.005, 0.010, 0.015, 0.020) nanocrystals are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Hall measurements. The nanocrystals with controlled spherical, cuboctahedral, and cubic shapes were readily prepared by varying the Bi doping concentration. Thermoelectric investigation of these nanocrystals shows that the Bi3+ doping increases electrical conductivity from 350 to 650 K and changes the Seebeck coefficient sign from positive to negative.
