High-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor with a field-tunable green fluorescent effect

Abstract Ferromagnetic semiconductors with luminescent effects provide a unique platform for studying magneto-electric-optical multifunctional devices. However, little is known about such materials with spin ordering well above room temperature. By using a unique high-pressure annealing method, a Cr and Fe disordered perovskite oxide SrCr 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 2.875 (SCFO) with a simple cubic structure was prepared. Magnetic measurements demonstrated the ferromagnetic behavior with a spin ordering temperature as high as 600 K. In contrast to metallic SrCrO 3 and SrFeO 3 , SCFO, with a moderate oxygen deficiency, is a direct bandgap semiconductor with an energy gap of 2.28 eV, which is within the visible light region. As a consequence, SCFO displays a green fluorescent effect arising from the d–p bonding and anti-bonding states. Moreover, the photoluminescence intensity can be tuned by a magnetic field. This work opens up a new avenue for research on room-temperature multifunctional materials with coupled magnetic, electrical, and optical performance.

Magnetic‐Field Controllable Displacement‐Type Ferroelectricity Driven by Off‐Center Fe²⁺ Ions in CaFe₃Ti₄O₁₂ Perovskite

Abstract Displacement‐type ferroelectrics usually exclude magnetic d ‐electron contribution. Applying a magnetic field thus can little change the electric polarization. Herein, a magnetic ionic driven displacement‐type perovskite ferroelectric CaFe 3 Ti 4 O 12 is reported. In this compound, magnetic Fe 2+ ions contribute to both ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic orders respectively at T C ≈107 and T N ≈ 3.1 K, resulting in coupled electric and magnetic domains. A moderate magnetic field can induce a metamagnetic transition toward ferromagnetic correlations. External magnetic fields can thus readily tune the magnetic and the joint ferroelectric domains, giving rise to exceptional magnetic‐field controllable displacement‐type polarization with a large magnetoelectric (ME) coupling coefficient. This study opens up a new avenue to find unprecedented ME effects in displacement‐type ferroelectrics for numerous applications.

Observation of Robust Compressed CuO₆ Octahedra and Exotic Spin Structure in CaCuFe₂O₅

CuO6 octahedra usually show elongated distortion, leading to active dx2−y2 orbitals and planar exchange interactions, while compressed CuO6 octahedra with active d3z2−r2 orbitals and unidirectional exchange interactions are exceptionally rare. Here, we design and synthesize a new frustrated antiferromagnet CaCuFe2O5 through a high-pressure and high-temperature approach, in which robust compressed CuO6 octahedra are realized, separating the Fe2O5 sheets that comprise zigzag spin ladders. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements exhibit a long-range antiferromagnetic order below the Néel temperature of 165 K, which is further confirmed by neutron diffraction. Detailed magnetic refinement reveals a C-type spin structure, with its spin arrangement and orientation distinct from that of the isostructural CaFe3O5. By constructing a Heisenberg model, we find that this is due to the exchange redistribution between the CuO6 octahedra and Fe2O5 sheets, during which some of the exchange interactions are selectively annihilated due to the specific orientation of the Cu d3z2−r2 orbitals in the compressed CuO6 octahedra. Our results provide a unique example of robust compressed CuO6 octahedra and show that it can selectively annihilate some of the exchange interactions and completely modify the spin structure and magnetic frustration accordingly.

High-Pressure Synthesis of Quadruple Perovskite Oxide CaCu₃Cr₂Re₂O₁₂ with a High Ferrimagnetic Curie Temperature

An AA'3B2B'2O12-type quadruple perovskite oxide of CaCu3Cr2Re2O12 was synthesized at 18 GPa and 1373 K. Both an A- and B-site ordered quadruple perovskite crystal structure was observed, with the space group Pn-3. The valence states are verified to be CaCu32+Cr23+Re25+O12 by bond valence sum calculations and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The spin interaction among Cu2+, Cr3+, and Re5+ generates a ferrimagnetic transition with the Curie temperature (TC) at about 360 K. Moreover, electric transport properties and specific heat data suggest the presence of a half-metallic feature for this compound. The present study provides a promising quadruple perovskite oxide with above-room-temperature ferrimagnetism and possible half-metallic properties, which shows potential in the usage of spintronic devices.

Discovery of a metallic oxide with ultralow thermal conductivity

A compound with metallic electrical conductivity usually has a considerable total thermal conductivity because both electrons and photons contribute to thermal transport. Here, we show an exceptional example of iridium oxide, Bi3Ir3O11, that concurrently displays metallic electrical conductivity and ultralow thermal conductivity approaching 0.61 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K. The compound crystallizes into a cubic structural framework with space group Pn-3. The edge- and corner-sharing IrO6 octahedra with a mixed Ir4.33+ charge state favor metallic electrical transport. Bi3Ir3O11 exhibits an extremely low lattice thermal conductivity close to the minimum limit in theory owing to its tunnel-like structure with filled heavy atoms Bi rattling inside. Theoretical calculations reveal the underlying mechanisms for the extraordinary compatibility between metallic electrical conductivity and ultralow thermal conductivity. This study may establish a new avenue for designing and developing unprecedented heat-insulation metals.
