Oxygen consumption of carps during live transportation

A study was undertaken to determine the oxygen consumption rate of live Asiatic carps during transportation in fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) tank of 1280 l capacity fitted inside a jeep trailer. Six experiments were conducted using table size fishes (425-1060 g) of Indian major carps viz., Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and the exotic carps Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Cyprinus carpio and Puntius gonionotus. Dissolved oxygen content and other water quality parameters were estimated at regular intervals during live fish transportation. The mean oxygen consumption values were found to be in the range of 15.7 - 58.2 mg fish-1 h-1 and the computed oxygen consumption rates were 19.74 - 70.58 mg kg fish-1 h-1 during transportation. Among the surface dwelling fishes, computed oxygen consumption rate was lower for silver carp (54.8 mg kg fish-1 h-1) as compared to catla (70.58 mg kg fish-1 h-1). Among the column living fishes, the oxygen consumption was lower for silver barb (50 mg kg fish-1 h-1) compared to rohu (68.9 mg kg fish-1 h-1). Common carp showed lowest value (19.74 mg kg fish-1 h-1) compared to mrigal (35.8 mg kg fish-1 h-1) among the bottom living fishes. The actual average oxygen consumption has shown clear-cut downward trends from the surface via column to bottom dwelling fishes.

Dietary incorporation of meat meal as a substitute for fish meal in carp fry rearing

Experiments were conducted in six ponds of 0.04 ha each during June-July, 1996 at CIFA fish farm to evaluate the efficacy of meat meal based diet against fish meal based diet along with a control on growth and survival of rohu fry during nusery reaiing. The ponds were stocked at a density of 5 million spawn/ ha and reared for a period of 15 days. The results demonstrated no significant difference (P > 0.05) in growth (25.0 mm/165.1 mg and 23.75 mm/ 138.6 mg) and survival (57.4 and 53.2 %) in fish and meat meal based diets, showing the possibility of substitution offish meal with meat meal for carp seed rearing. The other important factors like feed conversion ratio (FCR) and specific growth rate (SGR) also showed no marked difference in their values between the treatment groups provided with two experimental diets

Experiments were conducted in eight ponds of 0.08 ha each for a period of 6 months to evaluate the production performance combinations of Indian major carps and exotic carps at varied stocking densities and species. The four different treatments evaluated were stocking densities of 5000 and 10 000 fingerlings/ha with three Indian major carps (catla, rohu, mrigal) and combination of three Indian major carps with three exotic carp species (silver carp, grass carp and common carp) in replicate ponds. The mean net production levels recorded in different treatments were 1791 kg/ha, 2385 kg/ha, 2532 kg/ha and 3472 kg/ha in 6 months in treatments with three species combinations at 5000/ha, six species at 5000/ha, three species at 10 000/ha and six species at 10 000/ha, respectively. Correspondingly, the mean growth, survival and feed conversion ratios recorded in four treatments were 432 g, 84.7% and 1.49; 567 g, 86.2% and 1.47; 318 g, 82.1% and 1.69; and 444 g, 80.4% and 1.67, respectively.

Comparative evaluation of growth, survival and production of carp species at different stocking densities under polyculture

Experiments to evaluate the growth rates of different carp species, survival lev els and biomass production with respect to varied stocking densities ranging between 2000 and 6000 numbers /ha were conducted in six ponds of 0.04 ha each for a period of 11 months. Growth of all the species decreased with increase in stocking densities, with mean size of harvest recorded being 1035 g, 725 g and 550 g in treatments with density of 2000, 4000 and 6000/ha respectively. In general, exotic carp species showed higher growth rates than those of Indian major carps in all the treatments. Even at the stocking level of 35%, the three exotic carp species in combination contributed as much as 47.3 - 50.0% to the harvested biomass in three treatments. The mean gross and net production lev els registered in treatment with density of 6000/ha were estimated as 2741 kg/ ha and 2706 kg/ha respectively during a culture period of 11 months. The corre sponding estimated production levels shown in treatments with density of 4000 and 2000/ha were 2367.5 kg/ha, 2342.5 kg/ha and 1815.0 kg/ha, 1802.5 kg/ha respectively during the same period. The mean FCR values recorded in the three treatments were in the range of 2.69-2.82.

Nursery rearing of Indian major carp fry under different stocking densities

Experiments were conducted in ponds of 0.04 ha each during July-September, 1995 to evaluate the growth and survival of Indian major carp fry. The experiments were carried out for a period of 15 days for each species and at three densities, 2.5-7.5 million/ha for catla and at four densities, 2.5-10.0 million/ha for rohu and mrigal in duplicate ponds. Growth of carp fry in terms of length/weight was maximum in ponds with the lowest stocking density of 2.5 million/ha. Growth of catla was found to be higher than rohu and mrigal at similar densities. The maximum survival obtained were 61.6, 67.8 and 69.9 % in catla, rohu and mrigal respectively at 2.5 million/ha stocking density. In general growth and survival decreased with increase in stocking density. Among the three species, mrigal recorded higher mean survival followed by rohu at similar stocking density.

Evaluation of Aeration Intensities for Rearing of Carp Fingerlings

The levels of aeration intensities on growth and survival of fingerlings of Indian major carps and exotic carps were evaluated during March-June 1994 in three carp ponds of 0.08 ha each, the treatments being provision of one aerator and two aerators operated for 4-6 hours daily during late night hours along with a control without any aerator. The ponds were stocked al 50,000 fingerlings per hectare with catla, rohu, mrigal and grass carp at a ratio of 30:35:30:5 and reared for a period of 90 days. The results demonstrated the positive effect of aeration intensities on fish growth and survival rates of all the carp species. The influence was observed to be minimum on mrigal and maximum on grass carp.
