Ultraviolet characterization of integrating spheres

We have studied the performance of polytetrafluoroethylene integrating spheres in the ultraviolet (UV) region with wavelengths as short as 200 nm. Two techniques were used for this study; first, the spectral throughput of an integrating sphere irradiated by a deuterium lamp was analyzed by a monochromator. Second, a UV laser beam was directed into an integrating sphere, and spectrally dispersed laser induced fluorescence was studied. Significant absorption and fluorescence features were observed in the UV region and attributed to the contamination in the integrating sphere. We demonstrate that integrating spheres are easily contaminated by environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emitted from engine exhaust. Baking of the contaminated integrating sphere can reverse some but not all of the effects caused by contaminants. The implications for using integrating spheres for UV measurement are discussed.

Scientific applications and advantages of a low-energy synchrotron radiation source

Recent improvements to the synchrotron ultraviolet radiation facility led to unprecedented performance. High injection currents and beam stability, as well as tunable electron energies over a wide range make this storage ring a prime source for synchrotron radiation from the extreme‐ultraviolet to far‐infrared spectral regions. We will discuss plans to capitalize on this unprecedented performance through implementation of new experimental stations and extension of existing ones. It also will be shown that for applications using extreme‐ultraviolet to infrared synchrotron radiation a low electron energy storage ring has distinct advantages.

SulfurKβx-ray emission from carbonyl sulfide: Variations with polarization and excitation energy at theSKthreshold

Sulfur $K\ensuremath{\beta}$ x-ray-emission spectra from carbonyl sulfide have been measured with resonant excitation at the sulfur $K$ absorption threshold and compared with results of self-consistent field and singles-doubles configuration-interaction calculations. For excitation to the strong 4\ensuremath{\pi} absorption resonance, a splitting of the main emission peak is interpreted in terms of influence of the 4\ensuremath{\pi} electron on the final valence-hole states. The polarization selectivity of the emission spectrometer was used to distinguish emission polarized parallel versus perpendicular with respect to the polarization of the excitation radiation. The observed polarization dependence is consistent with the molecular symmetries of the calculated intermediate and final states.

In this study, the field emission characterization of carbon nanosheet thin film was conducted using a diode configuration with an anode-cathode distance of 254 mum. Photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) was used to investigate the field emission uniformity over the surfaces of carbon nanosheet thin films.

K-absorption spectra of atomic Ca, Cr, Mn and Cu

The 1s X-ray absorption spectra of atomic calcium, chromium, manganese and copper were determined experimentally and calculated theoretically. The spectra are dominated by a prominent line at threshold which precedes a smooth continuum extending to higher energies. Hartree-Fock calculations taking relativistic effects, relaxation and term dependence into account describe the discrete atomic resonance at threshold very well. The resonances at threshold have no counterpart in the spectra of the metals. The experimental atom to metal core level binding energy shifts agree well with the predictions of the thermodynamical model by Johansson and Martensson (1980).
