Impact of Proactive Retransmissions on Forward TCP Throughput over DVB-S/S2 Railroad Satellite Links with Power Arches

High-speed trains are one of the major collective mobile communities that will exploit broadband satellite services. ETSI DVB-S/S2 and DVB-RCS specifications have enjoyed tremendous success and global acceptance. Recently, both EU and ESA have sponsored R&D programmes [1][2][4] to introduce mobility adaptations to DVB-S2 and DVB-RCS specifications. Power supply arches that are equidistantly placed over railway tracks pose a specific challenge for satellite transmission to high-speed trains. These structures result in quasi-periodic and quasi-deterministic deep fades, which are particularly deteriorating to TCP throughput over high bandwidth-delay-product satellite links. The focus of this article is mitigations for such deep fades that are triggered due to power arches. Specifically, the article considers proactive retransmissions of IP datagrams over the forward link to maintain high levels in forward TCP throughput. The article presents ns-based DVB-S2/RCS simulation results with several TCP variants (Reno, Newreno, and SACK). We present our conclusions regarding the applicability of the mitigation together with the performance levels that can be expected.

Visions of 4G

As the Virtual Centre of Excellence in Mobile and Personal Communications (Mobile VCE) moves into its second core research programme it has been decided to set up a fourth generation (4G) Visions Group aimed at harmonising the research work across the work areas and amongst the numerous researchers working on the programme. This paper outlines the initial work of the group and provides a start to what will become an evolving vision of 4G. A short history of previous generations of mobile communications systems and a discussion of the limitations of third generation (3G) systems are followed by a vision of 4G for 2010 based around five elements: fully converged services, ubiquitous mobile access, diverse user devices, autonomous networks and software dependency. This vision is developed in more detail from a technology viewpoint into the key areas of networks and services, software systems and wireless access. It has been based upon a set of user scenarios that have been developed elsewhere in the Mobile VCE but which are summarised in the paper.

Fault tolerance of on‐board digital signal processing circuits

Abstract The paper is organized in four sections. The first section introduces the nature of faults as well as their causes. The methods used to identify faults and the actions necessary to correct the situation are outlined. The second section identifies the different fault tolerance approaches to conventional computational circuits and the DSP circuits. Current research work in the area of fault tolerance of FFT, signal processing and VLSI circuits involving systolic arrays is reviewed. Since some of the techniques do not involve error correction, reconfiguration of the circuit after error detection becomes necessary and a brief look at the relevant reconfiguration strategies is appropriate. Software fault tolerance is introduced and some work applicable to computations in general is reviewed. The implementation of the methods and its consequences are described in the third section. Concluding remarks form the final section.

Combined Delay and Rate Differentiation Packet Scheduling for Multimedia Content Delivery in Satellite Broadcast/Multicast Systems

The design of efficient packet scheduling algorithms is crucial to the radio resource management (RRM) in the satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (SDMB) system, which has emerged as a promising solution to the multimedia content delivery. In order to achieve more efficient quality of service (QoS) provisioning among different multimedia services, a novel packet scheduling algorithm, namely combined delay and rate differentiation (CDRD) packet scheduling, is proposed in this paper. This algorithm takes into account key QoS parameters aiming at fairly prioritising and scheduling heterogeneous multimedia contents in satellite environment. Its performance has been evaluated via simulations. The results show that, in comparison with existing scheduling algorithms, CDRD achieves better performance on delay, jitter and channel utilisation.

An on‐board processing satellite payload for european mobile communications

Abstract The paper considers the application of satellite on‐board processing (OBP) technology for land mobile applications for possible introduction in the late 1990s. Initially a system outline is presented followed by a discussion considering the merits of OBP over conventional transparent payloads. The paper then presents an overview of the work being carried out as part of an ESA study. Some details on the critical parts of the system are also included.

Call set-up signalling performance in S-PCN

Call set-up delay is one of the important factors to assess the quality of service in communication networks. Due to the power limitation problem in satellite personal communication networks (S-PCN), channel fading effects will cause signalling errors. Hence ARQ techniques are required. In this paper we examine the data link layer protocol used on the dedicated control channels (DCCH) in GSM systems. Two alternatives, modified go-back-N (GBN) and selective re-transmission (SRT) ARQ protocols, are proposed for the DCCH at the satellite air-interface. The optimum window size is investigated through the trade-off between the call set-up delay and the signalling capacity requirement.
