Numerical Simulation of Soil Evaporation with Sand Mulching and Inclusion

A model of unsaturated soil-water movement using a prediction model of basic physical soil properties for calculating correlation functions was developed using VADOSE/W. The reliability of the model was assessed by comparing the results with those of a soil-column test. Coefficients of determination, R2, between the simulated and the measured daily evaporation for sand-mulch thicknesses of 0 (control, CK), 1.7, 3.6 and 5.7 cm were 0.8270, 0.8214, 0.8589 and 0.9851, respectively. R2, between the simulated and measured cumulative evaporation for mulch thicknesses of 0, 1.7, 3.6 and 5.7 cm were 0.9755, 0.9994, 0.9997 and 0.9983, respectively. The fits were, thus, good, verifying the reliability of the model. The program accurately predicted the distribution of cumulative evaporation and volumetric water content during evaporation from a soil column with mulch thicknesses of 1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 2, 3, 5 cm and depths of sand inclusion thick of 0, 5, 10 and 15 cm for 20 days. Cumulative evaporation of sand inclusion was lower than in CK. Cumulative evaporation was independent of the mulch thickness and depended only on the depth of the inclusion: the deeper the inclusion, the higher the evaporation. The best mulch thickness was 5 cm, and the best inclusion depth was 5 cm. This study offers a new method to study the evaporation process with sand mulching and inclusion, which can provide guidance for improving the utilization efficiency of soil water.

Spatial–Temporal Variation of Climate and its Impact on Winter Wheat Production in Guanzhong Plain, China

Understanding the response mechanism winter wheat growth in response to climate change is critical for winter wheat production and field management. Therefore, in this study, we employed relative contribution and path analysis along with a crop model and remote sensing data to investigate to the effect of climate on winter wheat production for the 2009–2019 period in China’s Guanzhong Plain (GZP). We registered three key findings. First, winter wheat yield and water use efficiency (WUE) were increasing in the central-south and eastern GZP and were decreasing in the central-north and western GZP. Average temperature (Tavg) influenced winter wheat production by affecting the length of phenology. Net solar radiation (Rn) and sunshine hours (Ssh) affected winter wheat production by altering irrigation requirements (IRs), and precipitation (P) had a strong correlation with yield and WUE despite a limited contribution. Second, climatic factors were not independent, and they affected each other; Tavg and P mainly affected winter wheat production through Rn and Ssh. Finally, approximately 90% of the variation in yield and WUE of winter wheat could be explained by IRs and phenology, the yield and WUE decreased with an increase in IRs, and the prolongation of the reproductive growth stage exerted a positive effect on winter wheat production and effectively offset the negative effect of the shortening of the vegetative growth stage. This means that the adoption of long-lasting winter wheat varieties and high irrigation levels in a changing climate benefit winter wheat production and may be a viable strategy for adaptation to climate change. The results provide potentially valuable information for alleviating the impact of climate change on winter wheat production and improving the planting management of winter wheat in the GZP.

DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles: Modification, characterization, and biomedical applications

With the development of technologies based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), bare AuNPs cannot meet the increasing requirements of biomedical applications. Modifications with different functional ligands are usually needed. DNA is not only the main genetic material, but also a good biological material, which has excellent biocompatibility, facile design, and accurate identification. DNA is a perfect ligand candidate for AuNPs, which can make up for the shortcoming of bare AuNPs. DNA-modified AuNPs (DNA-AuNPs) have exciting features and bright prospects in many fields, which have been intensively investigated in the past decade. In this review, we summarize the various approaches for the immobilization of DNA strands on the surface of AuNPs. Representative studies for biomedical applications based on DNA-AuNPs are also discussed. Finally, we present the challenges and future directions.

Relationships among water and gas transport properties in soils from natural and induced clay gradients

Abstract Clay content in soil potentially has strong influence on soil structure and thereby controls soil physical, hydraulic, and gas transport properties. Only few studies have investigated the effect of clay content on saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K s ) and gas transport parameters such relative gas diffusivity ( D p /D 0 ) and air permeability ( K a ) under varying conditions of clay contents. In this study, two clay gradients were investigated: a natural clay gradient and an induced (clay mineral attapulgite‐controlled) clay gradient. We determined the effect of the two clay gradients on soil air and water parameters and identified the potential relationships between these parameters and other physical properties. The results indicated that all D p /D 0 , K a , and K s decreased with increasing clay content. The differences among the various treatments were dependent on the soil pore characteristics (air‐filled porosity, ε; pore continuity, PO A ; pore tortuosity, τ; and pore size distribution). Under the natural clay gradient, the increased clay content resulted in 52.8% more micropores and 35.2% fewer macropores. The slope of τ vs. clay content under the induced clay gradient was found to be higher than that under the natural gradient. Statistically meaningful correlations could be found between K s and K a (| r| = .904) and also between K s and D p /D 0 (| r| = .810), whereas D p /D 0 was evidenced to be better correlated with K s regardless of the type of clay gradient ( P < .01). The results thus provide a valuable experimental and numerical insight to develop useful correlations among K s , K a , and D p /D 0 under differing clay gradients.
