A robust video hash scheme based on 2D-DCT temporal maximum occurrence

In this paper, we propose a video hash scheme that utilizes image hash and spatio-temporal information contained in video to generate video hash. A video clip is firstly segmented to shots, and video hash is derived in unit of shot. We notice that for video hash applications in identification and verification, reference video and suspected video always appear in pair. Therefore, we propose to derive the shot hash in a pairwise manner. For both reference and suspected shot, we apply 2-Dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (2D-DCT) to each frame in the shot, quantize the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficient, and record the temporal occurrence of the co-located coefficient. We then choose a pair of the closet value as the DCT coefficient for every collocated entry, inverse transform to the spatial domain, and derive image hashes from two feature frames by hash based on Radial projections (Radial hASH). Experiment results show that the proposed 2D-DCT temporal maximum occurrence (2D-DCT TMO) scheme successfully derives shot hash that represents the content, and is very robust in video identification, authentication, and verification. Toward a Mesoscale Hydrological and Marine Meteorological Observation Network in the South China Sea

Abstract Air–sea interaction in the South China Sea (SCS) has direct impacts on the weather and climate of its surrounding areas at various spatiotemporal scales. In situ observation plays a vital role in exploring the dynamic characteristics of the regional circulation and air–sea interaction. Remote sensing and regional modeling are expected to provide high-resolution data for studies of air–sea coupling; however, careful validation and calibration using in situ observations is necessary to ensure the quality of these data. Through a decade of effort, a marine observation network in the SCS has begun to be established, yielding a regional observatory for the air–sea synoptic system. Earlier observations in the SCS were scarce and narrowly focused. Since 2004, an annual series of scientific open cruises during late summer in the SCS has been organized by the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO), carefully designed based on the dynamic characteristics of the oceanic circulation and air–sea interaction in the SCS region. Since 2006, the cruise carried a radiometer and radiosondes on board, marking a new era of marine meteorological observation in the SCS. Fixed stations have been established for long-term and sustained records. Observations obtained through the network have been used to study regional ocean circulation and processes in the marine atmospheric boundary layer. In the future, a great number of multi-institutional, collaborative scientific cruises and observations at fixed stations will be carried out to establish a mesoscale hydrological and marine meteorological observation network in the SCS.

Characteristics of rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones in the South China Sea, 1980–2016

The differences in the characteristics of the rapid intensification (RI) during the TCs that form in the SCS (referred as local TCs) and that enter the SCS from the western North Pacific (WNP; referred as entering TCs) have not been well studied, which could contribute the inaccuracy of current TC intensity forecast in the SCS. In this study, we used TC observations, reanalysis data and model experiments to analyze the RI occurrences during local TCs and entering TCs in 1980–2016. We found that the significant interannual and interdecadal variations in RI occurrences during local eastward-moving TCs were related to the strong intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) over the SCS and the WNP under La Niña conditions. RI during local westward-moving TCs showed insignificant variations as a result of the complex interactions among the monsoon trough, ISO and the large-scale circulation. RI during entering TCs showed strong interdecadal variations, with increased RI after 1997, even though the total number of entering TCs has decreased since 1997, which is a result of a higher number of entering TCs in the northwestern quadrant of the WNP, a stronger ISO and weak vertical windshear over the SCS and east of the Philippines under negative phase of Pacific Decadal Oscillation. The different variations and related mechanisms of RI indicates that distinct forecasting factors should be considered for intensity prediction during local eastward- and westward-moving TCs and entering TCs.

Spatial variation of shallow and deep soil moisture in the semi-arid loess hilly area, China

Abstract. Soil moisture in deep soil layers is the only relatively stable water resource for introduced vegetation in the semi-arid Loess Plateau of China. Characterizing the spatial variation of deep soil moisture is significant for vegetation restoration with respect to the topographic conditions. In this study, we focused on analyzing the spatial variations and influencing factors of soil moisture content (SMC) in shallow (0–2 m) and deep (2–8 m) soil layers based on soil moisture observation in the Longtan watershed. The vegetation type of each sampling site for each comparison is same, while varies with slope position, slope gradient, or slope aspect. The following results are found: (1) compared with shallow SMC, slope position and slope aspect may affect shallow soil moisture more, rather than deep layers. Slope gradient however, affect both shallow and deep soil moisture significantly. It indicates that high difference of deep soil hydrological processes between shallow and deep soil moisture remains, which can be attributed to the introduced vegetation and topography. (2) The vegetation growth condition has significant negative relation with deep soil moisture. This result indicates that plants under different growth conditions may consume soil moisture differently, thus causing higher spatial variation of deep soil moisture. (3) The dynamic role of slope position and slope aspect on deep SMC has been changed by introduced vegetation in semi-arid environment. Consequently, vegetation growth condition and slope gradient may be the major factor contributing to the spatial variation of deep soil moisture.

Detecting chaos in heavy-noise environments

Detecting chaos and estimating the limit of prediction time in heavy-noise environments is an important and challenging task in many areas of science and engineering. An important first step toward this goal is to reduce noise in the signals. Two major types of methods for reducing noise in chaotic signals are chaos-based approaches and wavelet shrinkage. When noise is strong, chaos-based approaches are not very effective, due to failure to accurately approximate the local chaotic dynamics. Here, we propose a nonlinear adaptive algorithm to recover continuous-time chaotic signals in heavy-noise environments. We show that it is more effective than both chaos-based approaches and wavelet shrinkage. Furthermore, we apply our algorithm to study two important issues in geophysics. One is whether chaos exists in river flow dynamics. The other is the limit of prediction time for the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO), which is one of the most dominant modes of low-frequency variability in the tropical troposphere and affects a wide range of weather and climate systems. Using the adaptive filter, we show that river flow dynamics can indeed be chaotic. We also show that the MJO is weakly chaotic with the prediction time around 50 days, which is considerably longer than the prediction times determined by other approaches.
