On the perpendicular recording process

An analytical model of the recording process is used to examine the factors that influence the recorded magnetization. If the ‘‘switching’’ occurs at the top of the medium, the magnetizaton is influenced mostly by the head-medium separation. If the ‘‘switching’’ occurs at the middle of the medium, the magnetization is influenced by the head-medium separation, the slope loop of the M-H at M=0, and the medium thickness. The magnetization is asymmetrical in both cases and the asymmetry translates into asymmetrical readback waveforms.

Development of a Multi-DOF Tuned Dynamic Absorber for Reducing Hand Vibrations on an Off-Highway Vehicle

Abstract A variety of off-highway vehicles are subject to significant steering wheel vibrations during operation. Typical examples of such machines are vibratory asphalt and soil compactors. Large compacting forces, while essential for the proper compacting operation, will inevitably cause undesired effects such as severe vibrations of steering wheels. Traditional vibration control measures are often found either impractical or less effective in reducing the level of hand vibrations which is considered an important quality and safety issue in compacter design and sales. In this paper, an advanced concept of reducing hand vibrations is presented in the context of Multi-degree-of-freedom Tuned Dynamic Absorbers (MTDA). The MTDA essentially represents an assembly of simple dynamic absorbers individually tuned to different targeted vibration modes in different degree of freedoms. While the design concept and associated parameters are numerically determined by FEA, the prototype is fine tuned to the desired vibration modes through a bench test. The effectiveness of the MTDA is experimentally verified in-situ through a sequence of tests which are carefully designed to adequately reflect its performance under field conditions.

Borehole measurements within highly magnetic bodies -corrections of measured magnetic fields and gradients

This paper gives explicit expressions for the internal field and gradient components for a layered earth, a layer with gradational susceptibility, a dipping sheet, a sphere and a cylinder, that are exposed to an external field with a uniform gradient. However, the internal field and gradient components cannot be measured directly, as magnetic sensors must be placed within a cavity in the magnetic medium. This modifies the measured field and gradients. For low to moderate susceptibilities, the cavity effect can be calculated assuming that the magnetisation of the surrounding medium is essentially unperturbed by the presence of the cavity. This assumption is unacceptable when the surrounding medium has high susceptibility. I also give expressions that allow the true field and gradient components within a high susceptibility body to be calculated from measurements made in cylindrical cavities, such as boreholes, or in spherical or disc-like cavities.

Photodetachment of relativistic ions

A series of fundamental laser ion beam experiments has been made feasible by the high-quality, relativistic (s = 0.842) H- ion beam available at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). The relativistic Doppler shift of the light from an ordinary ultraviolet laser provides what is, in effect, a continuously tunable vacuum-ultraviolet laser in the rest frame of the moving ions. The Lorentz transformation of a modest laboratory magnetic field provides an electric field of several megavolts/centimeter. The latest results of our photo-detachment work with H- beams and our spectroscopic work with H0 beams are presented. Our plans for future work are discussed.
