Abstract Oxidative desulfurization of hydrodesulfurized diesel using aldehyde and molecular oxygen in the presence of cobalt catalysts was studied. Among the catalysts used, cobalt phthalocyaninetetrasulfonamide was found to be the most efficient catalyst for the oxidation of sulfur compounds present in diesel. The reactivity of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene is greater compared to 4-methyldibenzothiophene. Sulfur content in diesel was reduced from 448 to 41 ppm by oxidation followed by extraction with acetonitrile. It was further reduced to 4 ppm by passing through a silica gel column. Extractive oxidative desulfurization of fuels using choline chloride and tetraethylene glycol-based eutectic solvent

Due to ever-increasing environmental problems, special attention has been paid to removing the organosulfur compounds present in transportation fuel. Therefore, to minimize the adverse effects of automotive exhaust emissions, sulfur level in motor fuels is minimized. Nowadays, DESs have become eco-friendly solvents due to their significant properties such as low toxicity, low volatility, etc. Thus, found attractive toward extraction process also. In this study, a series of DES using CHCl, MTTPBr, TEAC as HBA and PYG, EG, and TetEG as HBD in the different mole ratios were synthesized and investigated their extraction performance for sulfur in model and diesel fuels. Densities, viscosity & FTIR spectra of synthesized DESs were recorded. ODS was also performed for diesel. Results concluded that among all the synthesized DESs, [CHCl][TetEG](1:5) worked better for the desulfurization of fuels. In a single-stage, around 43% extraction efficiency was achieved for model sulfur compounds using [CHCl][TetEG](1:5), which can be enhanced up to 86% using successive extraction stages at low-temperature 30 °C. However, around 34% and 29%, respectively, extraction efficiency was achieved for diesel due to their complex nature. While on oxidation of diesel, it was increased up to 52% and 43% respectively in one single stage at a low-temperature 30 °C.

Liquid−Liquid Equilibrium Studies on Toluene + Heptane + Solvent

Liquid−liquid equilibria of the ternary systems toluene−heptane−tetraethylene glycol, toluene−heptane−N−formylmorpholine, toluene−heptane−(tetraethylene glycol + N-formylmorpholine), and toluene−heptane−(tetraethylene glycol + N-methylpyrrolidone) have been determined at 40 °C. The capacity and selectivity data of the solvent systems were obtained and compared. The data were correlated using Bachman, Othmer−Tobias, and Hand models.

Activity coefficients at infinite dilution (γi∞) offer a valuable tool for solvent selection in extraction processes. In this study, the γi∞ values for solutes like alkanes, aromatics, and naphthenes in solvents, i.e., ionic liquids N-butyl-4-methylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate [BMPy][BF4], 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [BMPyr][NTf2], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIM][BF4], were estimated using gas–liquid chromatography at temperatures 313.1, 333.1, and 353.1 K. Partial molar excess enthalpies at infinite dilution (ΔH1E,∞) were evaluated from the γi∞ values. The selectivity for the toluene/n-heptane system was also calculated from the experimentally observed γi∞ and compared to the literature values for well-established industrial solvents sulfolane and N-methyl pyrrolidone.

In this investigation, we synthesized deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on methyltriphenyl phosphonium bromide/tetra ethylene glycol (MTPPBr/TetEG) in different molar ratios ranging 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:6 and characterized by FTIR. The densities and viscosities were also measured at different temperatures. Dibenzothiophene (DBT) was extracted using the synthesized DES. Results concluded that at a single stage extraction, a 45% reduction of DBT sulfur compounds from model oil was found even at low-temperature 20°C.

Extraction of aromatics from naphtha reformate using combination solvents

Oxidative Desulfurization of HDS Diesel Using the Aldehyde/Molecular Oxygen Oxidation System

Oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4-methyldibenzothiophene (4-MDBT), and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) was studied using the isobutyraldehyde/molecular oxygen oxidation system in the absence of metal catalyst as the sulfur present in hydrodesulfurized (HDS) diesel is mostly in the form of substituted dibenzothiophenes. This oxidation system was found to oxidize these sulfur compounds to their respective sulfones, and oxidation reactivity was found to decrease in the order 4,6-DMDBT > 4-MDBT > DBT. Further, the study was extended to oxidation of sulfur compounds present in HDS diesel in a two-phase system using the aldehyde/molecular oxygen oxidation system. The oxidized HDS diesel on extraction with polar solvents showed remarkable reduction in total sulfur. Acetonitrile was found to be the most effective among solvents studied, and isobutyraldehyde was observed to be the best among aldehydes studied. In HDS diesel, total sulfur could be reduced from 448 to 77 ppm by oxidation followed by solvent extraction, and it could be further reduced to 31 ppm by passing through a silica gel column.
