A measurement of the cross section for γγ→pp¯ is performed at two-photon center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.25 GeV. These results are obtained using e+e−→e+e−pp¯ events selected from 1.31 fb−1 of data taken with the CLEO II detector. The measured cross section is in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and is in excellent agreement with recent calculations based on a diquark model. Data on inclusive kaon production in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilations at energies in the vicinity of the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance are presented. A clear excess of kaons is observed on the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ compared to the continuum. Under the assumption that the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decays into $B\overline{B}$, a total of 3.38\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.34\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.68 kaons per $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decay is found. In the context of the standard $B$-decay model this leads to a value for $\frac{(b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}c)}{(b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{all})}$ of 1.09\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13.

Readout techniques and radiation damage of undoped cesium iodide

Several readout techniques for undoped CsI have been studied which utilize the fast scintillation component for speed and the high photon yield for good energy resolution. Quantum yields have been measured for samples up to 30 cm in length using photomultiplier tubes, wavelength shifters, and silicon photodiodes. A study has also been made of the scintillation properties of undoped CsI. It is found that the light output and decay time of the 310-nm fast component increases and the emission spectrum shifts to longer wavelengths at lower temperatures. The effects on the optical transmission and scintillation light output due to radiation damage from /sup 60/Co gamma rays have been measured for doses up to approximately 10/sup 6/ rad. It is found that the radiation resistance of undoped CsI is substantially higher than has been reported for thallium-doped CsI.< >

Using data collected in the region of the Υ(4S) resonance with the CLEO-II detector, we report on the first observation of exclusive decays of the B meson to final states with a charmed baryon. We have measured the branching fractions B(B−→Λ+c¯pπ−)=(0.62+0.23−0.20±0.11±0.10)×10−3 and B(¯B0→Λ+c¯pπ+π−)=(1.33+0.46−0.42±0.31±0.21)×10−3, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to uncertainty in the Λ+c branching fractions. Čerenkov Counters with Thin Lucite Radiators

Čerenkov counters are described which we have used successfully in measurements of the flux of primary cosmic-ray alpha particles. They consist of cylindrical Lucite radiators 2.5 cm thick viewed by end-window photomultipliers. Fast singly charged particles that pass through the effective area in directions roughly parallel to the counter axis give pulse-height distributions with 35–45 percent relative width at half-maximum for effective areas up to 60 cm2. An analysis of factors that influence the resolution of Čerenkov counters is given.
