Activated carbons from Mongolian coals by thermal treatment

Mongolian different rank coals were used as raw material to prepare activatedcarbons by physical activation method. The coal derived carbons were oxidized with nitric acid in order to introduce surface oxygen groups. The ultimate elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, surface area, pore size distribution analysis and selective neutralization method were used to characterize the surface properties of activated carbons, oxidizedcarbons and raw coals. The effect of coal grade on the adsorption properties of the carbons were studied. It was concluded that Naryn sukhait bituminous coal could be serve as suitable raw material for production of activated carbons for removal of heavy metal ions from solution.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5564/mjc.v12i0.174 Mongolian Journal of Chemistry Vol.12 2011: 60-64

CHARACTERIZATION OF COAL FROM BAYANTEEG DEPOSIT

The coal of Bayanteeg deposit was investigated and its technical characteristics, elemental and petrographical maceral compositions were determined. On the basis of proximate, ultimate, petrographic analyses results, it has been confirmed that the Bayanteeg coal is a middle-rank D mark subbituminous coal. The pyrolysis of Bayanteeg coal was studied by using a standard quarts retort (tube) at different heating temperatures and the yields of pyrolysis products such as hard residue, tar, pyrolytic water and gas were determined. The result of these experiments showed that the higher yield 14% of tar can be obtained at heating temperature 500°C.Also the thermal dissolution of Bayanteeg coal was investigated by using a standard stainless steel autoclave at different heating temperatures and the yields of pyrolysis poroducts such as hard residue, tar, pyrolytic water and gas were determined. The tetralin was used as hydrogen donor solvent with constant mass ratio between coal and tetralin (1:1.8). The results of these experiments showed that high yield of tar 48% can be obtained on thermal dissolution of the coal organic mass at 450°C. The solubility of purified pyrolysis tar of Bayanteeg coal in hexane, benzene and dichloromethane was investigated by using silica gel column and the chemical composition of each fraction was determined by using of GC/MS chromatograph system.

THE RESULT OF INVESTIGATION OF COAL FROM CHANDGANA TAL DEPOSIT

Proximate and ultimate analyses showed that Chandgana Tal coal has the following properties; Wa-13.29%, Ad-12.43%, Vdaf-44.98%, Qdaf-5914 kcal/kg, C-67.56%, H-5.79%, S-1.67%, N-1.18% and O-23.8%. Pyrolysis of coal was performed at 200-700оС using small quartz reactor. With increasing temperature of pyrolysis, the yield of hard residue decreased, while the yield of tar and pyrolytic water increased. The yield of coal tar was maximum at 700оС, and reached 4.8%. At this stage, coal was pyrolized in a bigger scale retort of laboratory. The tar was separated from water and analysed by FT-IR and organic composition. Thermolysis experiments were also performed in order to explore the possibility of obtaining liquid products under mild condition. The results show that 23.5% of liquid product can be obtained at 450оC with coal to tetralin ratio (1:1.8).

Research on the thermal decomposition of Mongolian Baganuur lignite and Naryn sukhait bituminous coal

The technical characteristics, elemental composition of the organic and mineral matters, ash melting behaviors and carbonization and gasification reactivities of coals from Baganuur and Naryn sukhait deposits were investigated. The results of proximate and ultimate analysis confirmed that the coal from Baganuur deposit can be graded as a low rank lignite B2 mark coal and Naryn sukhait coal is a bituminous G mark one. The carbonization and gasification experiments were performed using TGA apparatus and fixed bed quartz reactor. The data obtained with two experimental reactors showed that Baganuur lignite had lower thermal stability and much higher CO2 gasification reactivity at 950°C as compared to those for Naryn sukhait bituminous coal.Mongolian Journal of Chemistry 16 (42), 2015, 22-29

Angesichts der Explosion des Ölpreises ist die Entwicklung neuer Prozesse zur Kohleverflüssigung eine Option für künftige Treibstoffe.
