In this paper, we study the optical anisotropy induced by femtosecond laser radiation in air during an optical breakdown. Using a transverse pump-probe technique, we demonstrate that this anisotropy appears in a narrow range of pump intensities, which are close to the optical breakdown threshold in air and lead to a phase shift of probe radiation, polarized collinear to the pump. The intensity range where an induced intense anisotropy occurs makes it possible to estimate the magnitude of the 5th-order Kerr nonlinear refractive index component in air.

Laser damage threshold of rapidly grown KDP crystals grown in the direction of a preset angle of synchronism

The results of the study of bulk laser damage threshold and structural characteristics of rapidly grown KDP crystals are presented in this paper. Crystals were grown in the direction of preset angle of synchronism at a rate of 10 mm/day. The developed technique allows to obtain blanks of nonlinear elements right during crystal growth thus decreasing material and power consumption when making products. The grown crystals have bulk laser damage threshold on the level of approximately 5 X 10¹⁰ W/cm² and high structural quality.

Polarization-sensitive photoresponse of nanographite

We report on polarization-sensitive direct current photoresponse of nanographite films in a 532–4000 nm spectral range. It is found that irradiation of the nanographite by the nanosecond laser pulses produces the electric current with intensity depending on the incidence angle and polarization of the laser beam. The obtained dependencies of the photoresponse on wavelength and polarization of excitation laser beam are discussed in terms of the surface photogalvanic and photon drag effects.
