Reactivity ratios of styrene and methyl methacrylate at 90°C

Abstract From the conversion–composition data of Gruber and Elias, the reactivity ratios of styrene (M 1 ) and methyl methacrylate (M 2 ) were calculated to be r 1 = 0.55 ± 0.02 and r 2 = 0.58 ± 0.06 at 90°C. The least‐squares method was then used on these and literature values at other temperatures to obtain the Arrhenius expressions: In r 1 = 0.04736 – (235.45/ T ), and ln r 2 = 0.1183 – (285.36/ T ). Using literature values for the homopolymerization steps, A 11 = 2.2 × 10 7 l./mole‐sec., E 11 = 7.8 kcal./mole, and A 22 = 0.51 × 10 7 l./mole‐sec. −1 , E 22 = 6.3 kcal./mole, activation energies and frequency factors were then calculated for the cross‐polymerization steps: A 12 = 2.1 × 10 7 l./mole‐sec., E 12 = 7.3 kcal./mole, and A 21 = 0.45 × 10 7 l./mole‐sec., E 21 = 5.7 kcal./mole.

Copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate. Reactivity ratios from conversion–composition data

Abstract A method for the determination of reactivity ratios from conversion–composition data has been outlined. The conversion–composition changes during the copolymerization of styrene (M 1 ) and methyl methacrylate (M 2 ) have been studied at 60°C. By a method of graphical intersection, the integrated form of Skeist's equation has been used to determine the reactivity ratios ( r 1 = 0.54 ± 0.02 and r 2 = 0.50 ± 0.06) in reasonably good agreement with values reported in the literature. The area of intersection was used as a measure of the precision of the data.

Computer calculations of binary and ternary copolymerization behavior

Abstract Computer programs in use in our laboratory for the calculation of binary and ternary copolymerization behavior are reviewed. In the case of binary copolymerization an analytical equation is available, allowing rapid and precise calculations of various parameters of interest. In the case of ternary and higher component systems numerical methods of integration are required. The application of the Runge‐Kutta method to ternary copolymerization systems is outlined. Examples and some of the difficulties encountered with both systems are presented.

Azeotropes in Ternary Copolymerization

Abstract A method is outlined for the calculation of azeotropic compositions in ternary copolymerization. The results of these calculations are consistent with those reported by Tarasov et al. (2), and with those calculated by a recent method developed by L. J. Young of the Dow Chemical Company. Our results are further checked with the calculated monomer/copolymer composition during the predicted azeotropic copolymerizations. It was found, in all cases, that the monomer/copolymer composition stays constant, as expected. A method of graphical extrapolation is introduced for estimating the azeotropic composition when some reactivity ratios are inaccurate.

Integral and differential binary copolymerization equations

Abstract An analytic solution to Skeist's copolymerization equation has been obtained for the case of binary copolymerization. From this solution, a differential copolymer composition equation is also derived. For given values of the reactivity ratios, these equations then permit the convenient calculation of expected binary copolymerization behavior as a function of conversion. Critical conditions leading to incompatible copolymerizations are also discussed.
