Multi-picture system for high resolution wide aspect ratio screen

Two novel LSI (large-scale-integrated circuit) chips for multi-picture function have been developed. These are an aspect ratio converter of IDTV (improved-definition TV) signals and a picture-in-picture processor for HDTV (high-definition TV) and NTSC signals. This IC system has achieved a multi-picture function on a wide-aspect-ratio screen.< >

Surface laminar circuit packaging

Discusses the SLC (surface laminar circuit), a component carrier technology which satisfies various requirements for packaging of small computers through its surface laminar structure, which is similar to semiconductor wiring. By utilizing photo via holes instead of plated through holes for signal line connection, SLC has a high wiring density which allows it to carry bare chips directly attached on the SLC by flip chip attach. This packaging technology has an extended reliability compared with conventional flip chip bonding and a wide range of application in small computers.< >

The Status of Hyperspectral Imager Suite (HISUI): One Year After Launch

Hyperspectral Imager Suite (HISUI) was launched in December 2019 and successfully attached to Japan Experiment Module Exposed Facility, International Space Station. Due to data communication problems, its initial check out activities have been delayed, but its first light image was acquired and released in September 2020. HISUI data delivery to Research Users will start in 1Q of Japanese FY2021 (April - June 2021).

Applicability of Green-Red Vegetation Index for Remote Sensing of Vegetation Phenology

We evaluated the use of the Green-Red Vegetation Index (GRVI) as a phenological indicator based on multiyear stand-level observations of spectral reflectance and phenology at several representative ecosystems in Japan. The results showed the relationships between GRVI values and the seasonal change of vegetation and ground surface with high temporal resolution. We found that GRVI has the following advantages as a phenological indicator: (1) “GRVI = 0” can be a site-independent single threshold fordetection of the early phase of leaf green-up and the middle phase of autumn coloring, and (2) GRVI can show a distinct response to subtle disturbance and the difference of ecosystem types.

Miniaturized vortex transitional Josephson memory cell by a vertically integrated device structure

We have developed the smallest Josephson nondestructive read-out (NDRO) memory cell, called a vortex transitional (VT) memory cell, for a Josephson high-speed 16-Kbit RAM. Its size is 22/spl times/22 /spl mu/m/sup 2/, which is only 16% of the size of previously developed VT memory cells used in Josephson 4-Kbit RAM. This is achieved by developing a vertically integrated device structure and refining small-junction technology. The cell consists of Nb/AlO/sub x//Nb junctions, three Nb wirings, SiO/sub 2/, insulators and Mo resistors. The VT memory cells operate properly, with a large operating margin of /spl plusmn/20%.< >
