Power Challenges Caused by IOT Edge Nodes: Securing and Sensing Our World

This paper discusses power challenges caused by an explosion in data driven application at the Edge of IOT. How technology, power management techniques, machine learning (AI) and energy recycling are evolving to do more computing at the Edge of IOT to solve Power, Data, Communication and Latency issues. The paper will show how innovation is needed to bring different topics together to provide an optimal solution for the power challenges ahead. A use case with biometric security at the edge will be discussed.

Single-water-dipole-layer-driven Reversible Charge Order Transition in 1T-TaS₂

Water–solid interactions are crucial for many fundamental phenomena and technological processes. Here, we report a scanning tunneling microscopy study about the charge density wave (CDW) transition in 1T-TaS2 driven by a single water dipole layer. At low temperature, pristine 1T-TaS2 is a prototypical CDW compound with 13 × 13 charge order. After growing a highly ordered water adlayer, a new charge order with 3 × 3 periodicity emerges on water-covered 1T-TaS2. After water desorption, the entire 1T-TaS2 surface appears as localized 13 × 13 CDW domains that are separated by residual-water-cluster-pinned CDW domain walls. First-principles calculations show that the electric dipole moments in the water adlayer attract electrons to the top layer of 1T-TaS2, which shifts the phonon softening mode and induces the 13 × 13 to 3 × 3 charge order transition. Our results pave the way for creating new collective quantum states of matter with a molecular dipole layer.

Evolution of the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheets during Multi-Pass Lowered-Temperature Rolling

AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets with 2 mm thickness were successfully fabricated by multi-pass lowered-temperature rolling. The evolution of the microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties during the rolling process was investigated. Based on the effect of multiple dynamic recrystallization, multi-pass lowered-temperature rolling not only refined the grain size obviously but also markedly improved the microstructure homogeneity. The resulting sheets had the optimal microstructure morphology with an average grain size of 4.38 μm. For the texture evolution, the stress state of the rolling process made the (0002) basal plane gradually rotate toward the rolling plane. However, the activation of non-basal slips due to the higher rolling temperature slightly rotated the (0002) basal plane point to the rolling direction (RD). As a result, the grain refinement strengthening and the texture strengthening together increased the yield stress to 202 MPa in the transverse direction (TD) and 189.8 MPa in the RD. Importantly, the resulting sheet concurrently exhibited excellent fracture elongation, about 38% in the TD and 39.2% in the RD. This was mainly ascribed to the finer grain size, giving rise to a significant effect of grain boundary sliding and the activation amount of non-basal slips.

Effects of Co, Zr Additions on the Magnetic Properties of Nanocomposite Nd<sub>2</sub>Fe<sub>14</sub>B/α-Fe Magnets

The effects of the additions of Co, Zr on microstructure and magnetic properties were studied for hot-deformed (HD) nanocomposite Nd 11.5 Fe 81.5 -x Nb 1 Co x B 6 ( x =0, 2, 4, 8) and Nd 11.5 Fe 82.5 -x Zr x B 6 ( x =0, 1) magnets, respectively. The remanence of hot-pressed (HP) magnets increased with increasing Co content firstly, but decreased when Co content was more than 2 at. % for HD magnets. Also the intrinsic coercivity (H ci ) and maximum energy product ((BH) m ) of HD alloys increased firstly, and then decreased with further increasing Co content. The maximum (BH) m of 24 MGOe was obtained at 2 at.% Co addition. Zr addition can improve significantly the c- axis alignment and magnetic properties of HD nanocomposite magnets, and HD Nd 11.5 Fe 81.5 Zr 1 B 6 magnet with 1.5 wt.% Zn addition showed enhanced properties with H ci of 7100 Oe and remanent magnetization (M r ) of 1.06 T. The alloys have the structure of plate-like grains, but there are still many coarse grains, which may result from the un-uniform composition in the alloy.

Carrier-dependent magnetic anisotropy of Gd-adsorbed graphene

Using first-principles calculation based on density functional theory, we study the magnetic anisotropy of Gd-adsorbed graphene and its dependence on carrier accumulation. We show that carrier accumulation not only impacts the magnitude of magnetic anisotropy but also switches its sign. Hole accumulation enhances the perpendicular anisotropy up to ∼16 meV per Gd atom, while electron accumulation switches the anisotropy from perpendicular to in-plane direction. Moreover, we find that the first order perturbation of spin-orbit coupling interaction induces a pseudo-gap at Γ for the perpendicular magnetization, which leads to the the anomalous magnetic anisotropy for the neutral composite. Our findings pave the way for magneto-electric materials based on rare-earth-decorated graphene for voltage-controlled spintronics.

Geometrical Structure of the Gold–Iron(III) Oxide Interfacial Perimeter for CO Oxidation

Abstract The geometrical structure of the Au‐Fe 2 O 3 interfacial perimeter, which is generally considered as the active sites for low‐temperature oxidation of CO, was examined. It was found that the activity of the Au/Fe 2 O 3 catalysts not only depends on the number of the gold atoms at the interfacial perimeter but also strongly depends on the geometrical structure of these gold atoms, which is determined by the size of the gold particle. Aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy images unambiguously suggested that the gold particles, transformed from a two‐dimensional flat shape to a well‐faceted truncated octahedron when the size slightly enlarged from 2.2 to 3.5 nm. Such a size‐induced shape evolution altered the chemical bonding environments of the gold atoms at the interfacial perimeters and consequently their catalytic activity. For Au particles with a mean size of 2.2 nm, the interfacial perimeter gold atoms possessed a higher degree of unsaturated coordination environment while for Au particles with a mean size of 3.5 nm the perimeter gold atoms mainly followed the atomic arrangements of Au {111} and {100} facets. Kinetic study, with respect to the reaction rate and the turnover frequency on the interfacial perimeter gold atom, found that the low‐coordinated perimeter gold atoms were intrinsically more active for CO oxidation. 18 O isotopic titration and Infrared spectroscopy experiments verified that CO oxidation at room temperature occurred at the Au‐Fe 2 O 3 interfacial perimeter, involving the participation of the lattice oxygen of Fe 2 O 3 for activating O 2 and the gold atoms for CO adsorption and activation.
