Enhancement of 1T‐MoS₂ Superambient Temperature Stability and Hydrogen Evolution Performance by Intercalating a Phenanthroline Monolayer

Abstract Metastable modification of MoS 2 (1T) is widely recognized as a hopeful non‐precious electrocatalyst in hydrogen production. This paper describes an approach to impart a superambient temperature stability to 1T‐MoS 2 by incorporating it in 2D hybrid architecture with cationic monomolecular phenanthrolinium (PhenH + ) hydrate layers. The atomic structure and bonding interactions of the assembled architecture revealed by PXRD, TEM, XPS, Raman and UV‐Vis spectroscopy data coupled with DFT calculations and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis suggest that the 1T‐MoS 2 sheets are involved in strong bonding with the PhenH‐H 2 O layers. This results in a highly stable layered system, which is kept intact in 0.5 M sulfuric acid electrolyte and tolerates superambient temperature heating. As compared with pure 1T‐MoS 2 , the compound with a phenanthroline interlayer provides greater activity and better current‐voltage efficiency in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution after heating treatment owing to stabilization of the 1T phase. The obtained results could be useful for the design of novel electrocatalytic devices exploiting 1T‐MoS 2 modification.

Wound Coating Collagen-Based Composites with Ag Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Structure and Biological Activity

The search for materials for a new generation of wound coatings is important due to the increase in antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and the number of patients with untreatable chronic purulent wounds. Metal nanoparticles, specifically silver nanoparticles, have antimicrobial activity and do not induce known bacterial resistance. To obtain new Ag-containing nanocomposites, type I collagen was extracted by an enzyme–acid method from cattle tendons. Silver nanoparticles were obtained by an environmentally safe method, metal-vapor synthesis (MVS), which enables obtaining metal nanoparticles without impurities. For this, metal vapors were cocondensed in a vacuum of 10−2 Pa on the walls of a quartz reactor cooled to 77 K using acetone as an organic dispersion medium. The composition of the collagen surface was determined by XPS using the spectra of C1s, N1s, and O1s. The presence of a peak with a binding energy of approximately 368.57 eV in the Ag 3d5/2 spectrum indicates the state of Ag0 silver atoms in the nanocomposite. SEM images showed that collagen contributes to the effective stabilization of Ag nanoparticles with an average size of 13.0 ± 3.5 nm. It was found that collagen is non-toxic and biocompatible with skin cells and fibroblasts. The collagen–Ag nanoparticle nanocomposites exhibited antimicrobial activity against bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and fungi Aspergillus niger.

Plasma engineering of graphene flakes and their features

We show a possibility of synthesis of graphene with the modified surface in plasma jets at atmospheric pressure and study the properties of the obtained samples by means of the electron microscopy and thermal analysis. By the XPS method, we determine the modification degree of the graphene surface by the oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl groups. We show the influence of the carbon source type and the plasma-forming gas kind on the surface properties of the graphene flakes.

CVD synthesis of boron nitride from a solid precursor

Abstract Here we report on the studies of the controllable synthesis of large area boron nitride films by the resistive heating method on a metal substrate without using a dangerous boron and nitrogen containing gases. In our original home-made CVD setup, we used the copper foil as a metal catalytic substrate. With the solid precursor of ammonia borane, the boron nitride films were synthesized under low pressure conditions and at a growth temperature of about 1000°C. We obtained the films with an area of up to 1x1 cm 2 by varying the synthesis parameters. The quality of boron nitride films was characterized using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray spectroscopy.

Gold nanoparticles were prepared by metal-vapor synthesis using isopropanol, acetone or toluene as dispersion media. The electronic states of the metal and the nature of the sorbed layer on the surface of the nanoparticles were studied. The analysis of photoelectron spectra of the obtained nanoparticles showed that regardless of the synthesis conditions, gold in all samples is in the Au0, Au+ and Au3+ states and a carbon-containing shell is present on all types of metal particles. The study of anticancer activity of nanoparticles in vitro with human cell lines showed the dependence of biological activity on their interaction time of samples obtained in toluene dispersion medium. The metabolic activity of gold nanoparticles obtained in isopropanol or acetone medium decreased in the earliest period of testing.
