Quantum well intermixing with high spatial selectivity using a pulsed laser technique

The authors demonstrate a new quantum well intermixing technique which allows bandgap shifts of typically 100 meV to be realised with a high spatial resolution in a GaInAs/GaInAsP MQW waveguide structure. The material was irradiated with pulses from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, and was then subjected to rapid thermal annealing at 700°C for several minutes. The spatial resolution of the disordering process was investigated across a masked interface, and was determined to be ≤25 µm.

On the refractive index of rutile

There are several reports on the measurement of the refractive indices of single-crystal rutile. Whereas the ordinary refractive indices estimated are in close agreement over a wide range of wavelengths, there is a significant difference in the corresponding values of the extraordinary refractive indices. Observations on the ‘prism-coupling technique’ using rutile prisms are reported to show that, for the refractive indices of rutile, the work of W.H. Bond represents a better standard.

Nanophotonics for Organic Material Sensing

Observations of intermodulation effects in an integrated optical spectrum analyser

Intermodulation occurring in a guided wave acousto-optic spectrum analyser device has been observed experimentally for the case of two input signals of equal strength. Limited agreement with the existing theoretical model has been obtained and possible reasons for this are considered. Recommendations are made for more wide ranging experimental investigations and areas identified where additional analysis would be useful. Taken together these will enable the limitations of practical large bandwidth devices to be properly assessed.

Optical characterization of a hydrogen silsesquioxane lithography process

In this article the authors report on a new optical linewidth metrology method which uses measured changes in the resonant wavelength of fabricated ring resonator structures to establish the linewidth of waveguides. The technique has a precision of better than 0.5nm for 500nm linewidths and can be used for process control although it cannot be used with arbitrary optical structures. To demonstrate the technique they fabricated ring resonator structures on silicon on insulator substrates several times over a period of 70days, using electron beam lithography with hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) negative tone resist followed by dry etching. They show that waveguide width variations of less than 0.5nm can consistently be achieved when the HSQ is diluted immediately prior to use but highly irreproducible results are soon obtained if a single dilution is prepared and used for an extended period.

Terahertz photonic microstructures for electro-optic modulator applications

The prospects for using photonic bandgap effects in suitably fabricated 1D waveguide photonic microstructures to enhance the strength of the electrooptic interaction at terahertz frequencies are considered. Both ferroelectric and electrooptic semiconductor are assessed. More work will be required, both on measuring material properties and in the conception and fabrication of new device structures.
