Ace of diamonds: Cyclohexamantane (C26H30), a large diamond-like molecule containing six peri-fused adamantane cages was identified in petroleum and its structure proven by X-ray crystallography (see picture). Never synthesized because of severe mechanistic difficulties, the structure of cyclohexamantane has appeared in theoretical molecular-simulation studies related to diamond; its experimentally determined properties are now discussed.

Geochemical evaluation of oils and source rocks from the Western Siberian basin, U. S. S. R

Although the Western Siberian basin is among the most prolific in the world, there has been disagreement among Soviet geoscientists on the origin of the petroleum within this basin. Screening geochemical analyses were used to select several oils and potential source rocks for a preliminary study using detailed biomarker and supporting geochemistry. Possible sources for this petroleum include rocks of Middle Jurassic, Upper Jurassic, and Lower Cretaceous age. Results indicate that most of the analyzed Western Siberian oils, occurring in reservoirs from Middle Jurassic to Late Cretaceous in age, are derived from the Upper Jurassic Bazhenov Formation. The locations of the samples in the study generally correspond to the distribution of the most effective oil-generative parts of the Bazhenov Formation. Analyses show that the Bazhenov rock samples contain abundant marine algal and bacterial organic matter, preserved under anoxic depositional conditions. Biomarkers show that thermal maturities of the samples range from the early to late oil-generative window and that some are biodegraded. For example, the Salym No. 114 oil, which flowed directly from the Bazhenov Formation, shows a maturity equivalent to the late oil window. This chapter explains how chemometrics simplifies genetic oil-oil and oil-source rock correlations and other interpretations of complex multivariate data sets.

Biological markers (biomarkers) are complex molecular fossils derived from biochemicals, particularly lipids, in once-living organisms. Because biological markers can be measured in both crude oils and extracts of petroleum source rocks, they provide a method to relate the two (correlation) and can be used by geologists to interpret the characteristics of petroleum source rocks when only oil samples are available. Biomarkers are also useful because they can provide information on the organic matter in the source rock (source), environmental conditions during its deposition and burial (diagenesis), the thermal maturity experienced by rock or oil (catagenesis), the degree of biodegradation, some aspects of source rock mineralogy (lithology), and age. Because of their general resistance to weathering, biodegradation, evaporation, and other processes, biomarkers are commonly retained as indicators of petroleum contamination in the environment. They also occur with certain human artifacts, such as bitumen sealant for ancient boats, hafting material on spears and arrows, burial preservatives, and as coatings for medieval paintings.

Geochemical characteristics and correlation of oil and nonmarine source rocks from Mongolia

New bulk and molecular organic geochemical analyses of source rock and oil samples from Mongolia indicate the presence of lacustrine-sourced petroleum systems in this frontier region. Samples of potential source rocks include carbonate, coal, and lacustrine-mudstone lithologies that range from Paleozoic to Mesozoic in age, and represent a variety of tectonic settings and depositional environments. Rock-Eval and total organic carbon data from these samples reflect generally high-quality source rocks, including both oil- and gas-prone kerogen types, mainly in the early stages of generation. Bulk geochemical and biomarker data indicate that Lower Cretaceous lacustrine mudstone found in core from the Zuunbayan field is the most likely source facies for the East Gobi basin of southeastern Mongolia. Oil and selected source rock samples from the Zuunbayan and Tsagan Els fields (both in the East Gobi basin) demonstrate geochemical characteristics consistent with nonmarine source environments and indicate strong evidence for algal input into fresh- to brackish-water source facies, including elevated concentrations of unusual hexacyclic and heptacyclic polyprenoids. Despite similarities between Zuunbayan and Tsagan Els oil samples, biomarker parameters suggest higher algal input in facies sourcing Zuunbayan oil compared to Tsagan Els oil. Tsagan Els oil samples are also generated by distinctly more mature source rocks than oil from the Zuunbayan field, based on sterane and hopane isomerization ratios.
