Design and Synthesis of New Liquid Crystalline Materials

Calamitic liquid crystals are promising candidates for applications in liquid crystal displays and almost all of the liquid crystalline materials used in such displays comprise of core unit with six carbon ring systems. This thesis describes the synthesis of perhydroazulene ring system with substituents in position 2 and 6 and its use as a core unit for various new calamitic liquid crystals. It was supposed that the perhydroazulene ring system would be analogous to the cyclohexyl ring and would represent an important and effective nematogenic building block. Therefore, perhydroazulene ring system was constructed and its stereochemistry at ring junction and at 2 and 6 position was determined with the help of a molecular mechanics approach and from various crystal structures of their acids. Another route to reach a perhydroazulene system with different replaceable terminal groups at position 2 was developed. In order to extend the length of the system, bisindan and its various derivatives were synthesised and their stereochemical features were investigated by density functional theory of BLYP and from the X-ray structures of various intermediate acids. New derivatives based on cis- and trans-fused perhydroazulene system were synthesised through various synthetic strategies and finally, newly synthesised materials were investigated for their mesogenic properties

Effect of Change in Substrate Temperature, Layer Thickness on the Behaviour of N-Cds Thin Films and Formation of Their Diodes and Photovoltaic Cell

The dynamics of CdS nano-polycrystalline layers were explored with changes in the substrate temperature (ST) and layer thickness (t). The grown films exhibit α-CdS wurtzite structure with the most preferred (002) orientations. The deposited layers show changes in their structural properties; their average crystallite size varies from 26.30 to 78.93 nm. The structural, optical and electrical parameters also vary with the increase in ST and t. The films of 200 nm demonstrate the specimen thickness effect; the secondary grain growth is noticed at 300 nm and above. The CdS films show n-type conductivity; their mobility (μ) values exhibit a range of 73.8 - 158.5 (cm2/V-s), and the resistivity (ρ) varies from 50 to 160 (Ω-cm). The FTO/n-CdS/Al structure behaves as a rectifier (Schottky barrier diode ). The ideality factors (ɳ) demonstrate a change from 4.51-5.14, the barrier heights (ϕbo) vary from 0.718-0.789 eV, and the series resistance (Rs) change from 85 to 178 Ω. Out of different ST and t values, the 200 nm films grown at 300 K (room temperature) provide superior characteristics. The Ag/n-CdS/p-CuS/FTO heterojunction diodes provide a barrier height (ϕbo) value of 0.732 eV at room temperature, and their photovoltaic cell response was observed.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Jurinea dolomiaea and Biological Activities

Green syntheses of nanoparticles using plant materials are of tremendous scope. Here we report advantageous green synthesis for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous-root extract of Jurinea dolomiaea and AgNO 3 . Color change of solution and UV-Vis absorption at 444 nm indicated the formation of AgNPs. XRD confirmed their face centered cubic structure (fcc) with average particle size of 24.58 nm. SEM analysis showed their spherical, cubic and triangular structures. FT-IR indicated the presence of functional groups of reducing and stabilizing phytochemicals. Methanol-root extract of J. dolomiaea revealed high flavonoid (445 mg RE/g) and phenolic contents (92 mg GAE/g). Methanol-extract showed high antioxidant potency (IC 50 = 0.494 μ g/mL), rationally due to its high phenolic and flavonoid contents. These AgNPs showed the highest and equal antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Inhibition zone 11.0 mm) whereas, methanol-roots extract showed equal and intermediate activities (Inhibition zone 8.0 mm) against both pathogens but aqueous extract showed poor activities (Inhibition zone 6.0 mm) against these both pathogens. AgNPs are playing a major role in the field of nanotechnology and nanomedicine due to their antimicrobial and drug delivery efficacy as well as reasonable tolerance in human biology.

Abstract The demand for biodegradable materials is on the rise because humanity is now more concerned about a sustainable lifestyle than ever before. In this regard, we present solution casting synthesized novel biopolymer blended films of poly(butylene succinate)/cyclic olefin copolymer (PBS/COC) for packaging applications. These films were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared microscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), universal tensile testing (ASTM D882 standard), and antibacterial Disc diffusion tests using gram‐negative Escherichia coli ( E.coli ) and gram‐positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S.aureus ) bacteria. The XRD and FTIR revealed the type of bonding to be physical in‐between the constituent polymers; ensuring the biodegradable nature of their blends, while the thickness of films was found to be <100 μm. The SEM, tensile, and antibacterial testing concluded that 30%PBS with 70%COC by weight blending is the best composition; showing a compact/pin‐holes free morphology, the highest strength of 91 MPa, and contact inhibition with E.coli and S.aureus bacteria.

Short Communication: Covalently Functionalized Graphene Oxide - Characterization and Its Electrochemical Performance

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized through chemical ex-foliation process from graphite flakes. GO was further covalently functionalized with Levofloxacin (LOF) by Steglich esterification reaction. Herein, we describe a method for the chemical functionalization and in-situ reduction of GO using LOF as a reducing agent. GO was reduced and remained well dispersed after reduction in the solution even after 6 months. The functionalized and reduced GO was characterized through range of analytical techniques. Functionalized GO was further used as a supercapacitor (SC) electrode material and its electrochemical behavior was compared with GO and reported. Capacitance of functionalized GO was found to be four times the capacitance of GO, indicating significantly enhanced electrochemical performance of functionalized GO as compared to pure GO.

Effect of strontium and iron on the structural integrity and drug delivery of Whitlockite

Localized drug delivery is a promising approach to treat bone infections. An ideal scaffold should provide a good regeneration environment and must be able to treat possible infections during healing. In this work, Strontium (Sr) and Iron (Fe) co-substituted whitlockite (WH) is prepared and comprehensively evaluated for the localized drug delivery application. Strontium and iron are added in varying ratios to study the effect of foreign metal concentration on crystallinity, phase purity, and drug delivery of WH. The prepared bioceramics were analyzed using x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS). The XRD and FTIR analysis confirmed that the strontium and iron addition did not form secondary CaP phases. The in-vitro release study of the prepared samples showed a sustained release for 25 days in all samples. Results demonstrated in the present study confirm the potential of prepared bioceramics for drug delivery and biomedical applications.
