Terrorism involves the use or threat of violence and aims to instill fear not only in the immediate victims but also in the general public. The extent to which it relies on fear distinguishes terrorism from conventional warfare. Terrorism has become a matter of international concern. Terrorists make use of ‘Weapons of mass destruction’. A weapon of mass destruction is a nuclear, radiological, chemical, biological or other device designed to harm large numbers of people. Weapons of mass destruction (WMD) constitute a class of weapons with the potential to have massive destructive effects, killing millions of civilians, endangering the natural environment and changing the lives of future generations with catastrophic consequences. These include: Chemical weapons can cause death or serious injury to persons by poisonous chemicals. Biological weapons spread disease organisms or poisons to harm or kill people, animals or plants. Radiological weapons which release radioactivity to maim and kill humans, animals and plants. Nuclear devices can be used to disperse all the three. The general awareness, covering all aspects about these weapons of mass destruction in one compilation, is needed by law enforcement agencies, criminal justice organizations, forensic science professionals, medical fraternity and the general public.

Interference Study on Artificial Sweeteners in Forensic Toxicological Screening by TLC

A study was carried out to assess the possible interference of artificial sweeteners (Saccharin, sucralose, aspartame and cyclamate) while screening for drugs and pesticides in stomach content, urine and tissues by TLC for forensic toxicological purposes. Even though these sweeteners were extractable in acidic drugs extract and pesticide extract but they did not interfere in the analysis of drugs and pesticides. Therefore the screening methods usually used in forensic toxicological analysis for drugs and pesticides can be applied as such without any modification as the artificial sweeteners were not found to interfere.

Simultaneous Determination of Saccharin and Aspartame in Drinks by UV-Spectrophotometry

A simple and relatively less expensive UV spectrophotometric method was developed for simultaneous determination of saccharin and aspartame in soft drinks by multicomponent analysis method. Wavelengths of 235 nm and 257 nm were selected for determination of saccharin and aspartame respectively. The limit of detection for saccharin and aspartame was found to be 0.0015 g L−1 and 0.04 g L−1 respectively. The method obeys beers law within the concentration range of 0.002 g L−1 to 0.04 g L−1 and 0.06 g L−1 to 0.28 g L−1 for saccharin and aspartame respectively. This method was found to have the coefficient correlation (r2) value of 0.9997 and 0.999 for saccharin and aspartame respectively. The method was validated for accuracy, precision and repeatability. The proposed method was found to be simple, accurate, reproducible, sensitive, free form interferences, inexpensive and having good applicability to the routine analysis of samples of foods and beverages.

Analytical Profiling of Processed Printer Inks on Papers for Inorganic Trace Elements by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis

For the forensic examination of printed documents, an attempt has been made to determine the elemental composition of inks of ink jet printer taken from sample documents using nondestructive technique of Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry and in order to generate the analytical profiling of printed inks for inorganic trace elements leading to the differentiation of printers. All the four primary inks used in printers are the matrix of interest for analysis in this study. The coloured sample printouts were printed in Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black colour ink from inkjet printers of the four leading manufacturers. The inorganic trace elemental profile (in weight percentage) of printer inks was obtained by using SEM-EDX Spectrometry. Whether the elemental composition of samples is similar or different, can be identified from the presence/absence of elements as well as different weight percentage. A Sensitive Spectrophotometric Method for the Determination of Diazepam with MBTH

A sensitive, specific spectrophotometric method for the determination of diazepam in bulk drug and formulations has been developed. The diazepam is hydrolyzed to yield 2-Methylamino-5- chlorobenzophenone which is coupled with 3-Methyl benzthiazolinone-2-hydrazone, in the presence of ceric ammonium sulphate as an oxidizing agent, to yield a blue colored solution having an absorbance maximum at 585 nm. It obeys Beer’s law in the concentration range of 0 – 4 µg / mL, with a molar absorptivity of 48752L.Mol-1.cm-1 and Sandell’s sensitivity of 0.0068 µg cm-2with good precision, reproducibility and accuracy.
