Thermal Comfort Characteristics and Occupant Expectations in Open Plan Offices - an Investigation in Hot Humid Climate

Experimental studies and subjective evaluation of thermal comfort have been carried out with respect to an open-plan office building located in hot and humid climate of India. Experimental measurements are made using LSI Lastem indoor environmental quality monitoring system. The subjective evaluation follows the ASHRAE Class II protocols. A considerable difference is found between the simulated comfort levels and the perceived comfort levels. A considerable difference is noted in the radiant temperature and illuminance levels across the office space especially between the peripheral zone and the interior zones. Subjective analysis of thermal comfort shows that the Fanger's PMV model predicts higher level of heat discomfort compared to the actual subjective thermal sensation of the occupants. The measured PMV values ranged from 0 to +1 while the subjective votes (TSV) ranged from +1 to -1.5. However it needs to the noted that majority of the subjects view fully glazed facade as an identity for modern office building. Similarly a higher percentage of the respondents are satisfied with the outdoor views available to them irrespective of the glare related discomfort that is caused by the glass facade. The study highlighted the need for a real time performance benchmarking for office spaces in Indian scenario.

Cross-country variation in psychophysiological responses to traffic noise exposure: Laboratory experiments in India and the UK

Traffic noise exposure has detrimental effects on human health, including both auditory and nonauditory impacts. As one such nonauditory factor, individuals and communities in different countries may exhibit different patterns of noise sensitivity and corresponding tolerance levels, leading to a change in overall noise perception. This paper investigated the cross-country differences in psychophysiological responses to traffic noise exposure between Indian and British individuals. A psychophysiological signal-based [heart rate variability (HRV) and skin conductance response (SCR)] listening experiment was conducted in India and the United Kingdom to analyze changes in noise perception and psychophysiological responses resulting from exposure to the same noise stimuli. HRV analysis indicated greater cardiovascular impact in the British group due to a significant increase in heart rate (W = 653, p < 0.01). Also, a significant increase in the SCR (W = 535, p < 0.001) was noted, indicating a greater level of physiological stress among British participants due to traffic noise stimuli. These findings highlight the difference in noise perception due to cross-country variation using psychophysiological responses. Understanding these cross-country differences can inform targeted interventions and policies to mitigate the adverse effects of traffic noise on human well-being.

A review on reduced order models for building and urban energy simulations

Building energy simulations are employed to forecast energy demand and load profiles. Despite reasonable prediction accuracy, they prove to be computationally intensive especially with the increase in scale and complexity of buildings. Reduced-order models simplify the complex processes, but capture the effect of dominant input variables, thus offer computational efficiency. This article presents a comprehensive review of reduced-order models, potential applications, modelling approaches, accuracies, strengths, weaknesses and adaptation challenges. These models have been mapped on the basis of modelling approaches and techniques. Models have been classified in two ways: methods which simplify the building and its components and, those which minimize the number of thermal zones. The article provides a review of seven different methods used for reduced-order modelling, along with insights into the error percentages, which can range up to 20% for these models. Critical gaps in literature and scope for future work are discussed.

Effect of Thermal Mass and Insulation Position in Walls on the Thermal Performance of Residential Buildings in a Cold Climate

This study investigates the effect of thermal mass and insulation position on the thermal performance of residential buildings in a cold climate. A combination of numerical simulations and field measurements is employed to assess the impact of different wall configurations on heating energy demands and comfort. Configurations with thermal mass placed on the interior side of walls exhibit better thermal performance, reducing temperature fluctuations and enhancing thermal comfort. The study also explores the influence of climate severities, changing the window-to-wall ratio and building orientation on energy savings and comfort for various wall configurations. Wall B (thermal mass inside and insulation outside) reduces HED by 4% and HDD by 3% across different locations. Wall B reduced HED by 9.8% and HDD by 1.4% for a south facing building, and reduced HED by 3.2% and HDD by 2.2% for 10% WWR.

Bibliometric analysis and review of auditory and non-auditory health impact due to road traffic noise exposure

Abstract This paper presents a bibliometric and critical review of auditory and non-auditory health impacts due to road traffic noise exposure. The paper discusses the general trends of studies conducted in the research domain using the bibliometric network approach. These networks are based on citation, bibliographic coupling, and co-authorship relationships. Further, a critical review is conducted to summarise the auditory and non-auditory impacts due to traffic noise exposure. Auditory health impact issues such as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus are presented. Non-auditory impacts are categorised as physiology and performance-related impacts. Physiology related health impact includes a review of cardiovascular and sleep disturbance issues due to noise. Performance-related health impact includes annoyance and cognitive impairment issues. This paper discusses the severity level, different exposure-response relationships, techniques, and empirical models developed to assess the magnitude of these health impacts. Subjective and laboratory assessment techniques used to analyse the health impact through various modeling and statistical approaches are considered. Additionally, a scenario analysis of health impact due to heterogeneous transportation is performed. An assessment is done to find the applicability of health risk prediction models in heterogeneous traffic conditions.

Grey Wolf algorithmic framework for building energy optimization in India's Köppen-Geiger climatic zones

Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) is an emerging evolutionary metaheuristic technique capable of solving challenging engineering problems. Despite its growing popularity, GWO's suitability for building design problems remains unexplored. This paper presents a novel algorithmic framework using EnergyPlus, EPLauncher and Matlab to implement a single and bi-objective GWO for building energy optimization. The goal is to identify optimal wall and window type, orientation, air conditioner's operational profiles and cooling setpoints consistent with minimum annual and peak cooling energy demands for a residential apartment building in five Köppen-Geiger climate zones across India. In place of testing the entire parametric space involving 5,76,000 possibilities, GWO identifies the optimal solutions inside 1250 trials (∼99% run reduction). The single and bi-objective GWO produces (83-97)% and (75-95)% annual and peak cooling demand reductions than a typical construction and operation scenario in the five climate zones. The optimized solutions recommend low thermal transmittance-high capacitance wall sections, 10–15% window-to-wall ratios and double glazed windows with a low solar gain coefficient. Further, optimal air conditioner operational parameters (setpoint and duration) are identified. The presented algorithmic framework is highly robust and can integrate can incorporate upcoming metaheuristic algorithms to perform single and multiobjective building energy optimizations.

Application of Agent-Based Modelling for Evaluating Level of Service in Airports

Airports worldwide evaluate Level of service (LOS) to assess performance of the terminal for the current scenario and to compare it to a projected scenario. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) global standard is the widely accepted framework that evaluate airport LOS based on space and time characteristics. The application of simulation tools can be used in this regard to depict the airport LOS scenarios more interactively and in detail. Moreover, this approach also enables modelling future scenarios of technological or infrastructure modifications to cater terminal capacity constraints. The use of Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) in evaluating airport LOS is discussed in this paper. The study utilized field study at the check-in hall of a large-sized airport, the Chennai International airport, India to capture the passenger flow characteristics such as passenger entry rate, walking speed, group size, passenger flow sequence and flight movement frequency. These are used as inputs to a microscopic pedestrian modelling tool, AnyLogic. Three scenarios of airport LOS are modelled to evaluate the passenger density and the dwell times. The results show that the variation in number of service points and flow rate significantly affect the passenger dwell time, queuing length, queuing time and passenger density at the check-in zone. Visual and quantitative representations of the scenarios are also presented, analyzed and compared with the existing standard.
