Ce-Doped Manganites of Lanthanum-Strontium as Promising Inducers of Magnetic Hyperthermia

Ce-doped nanoparticles of La-Sr manganite were synthesized via sol-gel method. Formation of the single-phased nanoparticles with the perovskite structure up to 5% of Ce was studied by X-ray diffraction method. Magnetic properties of obtained manganite nanoparticles were investigated. It was found that magnetic fluids based on the obtained nanoparticles heated up effectively under the action of an alternating magnetic field to 43-45°C.

Biological activity of cerium dioxide nanoparticles

Cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) with a high value of ζ-potential (≥30 mV) have been synthesized in reverse microemulsions and they are able to form the high-stable aqueous suspension without any additional stabilizers. It has been shown that the interaction of such CeO2 NPs with transport proteins, such as BSA, affects their molecular conformation and biochemical activity. The observed changes in the UV-absorbance spectrum and intrinsic fluorescence quenching of BSA molecule are indicative of the occurrence of structural changes caused by binding with the surface of CeO2 NPs. Low affinity between BSA and CeO2 NPs has been confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Moreover, CeO2 NPs can act as regenerative free-radical scavengers, and their antioxidant activity depends on the concentration. The positive charge of CeO2 NPs can be attributed to their low toxicity toward human malignant lymphocytes MT-4 and breast cancer cells MCF-7 however, the morphofunctional features of MCF-7 cells interacting with CeO2 NPs are indicative of the decrease in oncogenicity.

Room- and low-temperature magnetic parameters of Y$_3$AlFe$_4$O$_{12}$ garnets

Magnetic properties of Y$_3$AlFe$_4$O$_{12}$ garnet ceramics have been studied over a wide range of temperature ($3-370$ K) and magnetic fields (up to $2$ kOe). Effects of varying the temperature on some of the application-specific magnetic characteristics have been analyzed in detail. With the decrease in temperature, the effective anisotropy constant, $K_{Eff}$, is found to sharply rise below $\sim150$ K, while the saturation magnetization, $M_s$, changes only slightly ($<20\%$ within $3-250$ K). The exchange stiffness, $A_{ex}$, and spin wave stiffness, $D$, parameters mirror the relatively smooth behavior of the magnetization at low temperatures but display a rapid drop when $T$ approaches $T_C\approx436$ K. The temperature dependence of the domain wall thickness and the critical single-domain size correlate with the corresponding values for pure Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) and are in agreement with the theoretical estimates. We conclude by discussing the ways of how to use the obtained results for tailoring the magnetic properties of YIG-based materials for technological applications.

Nanosized particles of AFe 2 O 4 compounds (A = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) with spinel structure have been synthesized by precipitation from glycol solutions. Diethylene glycol (DEG) was used as high-boiling alcohol medium. Based on NMR studies, the peculiarities of the formation of nanoparticles in glycol solution using metal nitrates as initial reagents have been considered. For the synthesized compounds crystallographic, microscopical and magnetic investigations have been carried out.
