High-energy molecular-frame photoelectron angular distributions: a molecular bond-length ruler

We present a study on molecular-frame photoelectron angular distributions (MFPADs) of small molecules using circularly polarized synchrotron light. We find that the main forward-scattering peaks of the MFPADs are slightly tilted with respect to the molecular axis. This tilt angle is directly connected to the molecular bond length by a simple, universal formula. We apply the derived formula to several examples of MFPADs of C 1s and O 1s photoelectrons of CO, which have been measured experimentally or obtained by means of ab initio modeling. In addition, we discuss the influence of the back-scattering contribution that is superimposed over the analyzed forward-scattering peak in the case of homo-nuclear diatomic molecules such as N2.

Experimental evidence for selection rules in multiphoton double ionization of helium and neon

We report on the observation of phase space modulations in the correlated electron emission after strong field double ionization of helium using laser pulses with a wavelength of 394~nm and an intensity of $3\cdot10^{14}$W/cm$^2$. Those modulations are identified as direct results of quantum mechanical selection rules predicted by many theoretical calculations. They only occur for an odd number of absorbed photons. By that we attribute this effect to the parity of the continuum wave function.

A photon-ion merged beam endstation has been set up at the variable polarization XUV-beamline P04 of PETRA III in Hamburg. In a commissioning experiment first results could be obtained for multiple photoionization of Xeq+ ions (q = 1,2,..,5) at photon energies around the 3d ionization threshold.

Stereochemical configuration and selective excitation of the chiral molecule halothane

X-ray single-photon ionization and fragmentation of the chiral molecule halothane from a racemic mixture have been investigated using the cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy technique. Two important facets related to the core ionization of this species are examined: Firstly, the distinction of enantiomers (mirror isomers) and the determination of absolute configuration on a single-molecule level by four-body Coulomb explosion; secondly, the interplay of site-selective excitation and fragmentation patterns. These results are easily transferable to other molecular species and show the wealth of features that can be investigated by coincidence spectroscopy of chiral molecules.

Electron transfer in fast proton-helium collisions

We have measured the electron-transfer process in fast collisions (630--1200 keV/u) of protons with helium, which is dependent on the projectile scattering angle and the final electronic state. The fully differential data accompanied by theoretical second-order perturbation theory allow a detailed insight into the mechanism of electron-transfer processes.

Ion-impact-induced interatomic Coulombic decay in neon and argon dimers

We investigate the contribution of interatomic Coulombic decay induced by ion impact in neon and argon dimers (Ne${}_{2}$ and Ar${}_{2}$) to the production of low-energy electrons. Our experiments cover a broad range of perturbation strengths and reaction channels. We use 11.37 MeV/u S${}^{14+}$, 0.125 MeV/u He${}^{1+}$, 0.1625 MeV/u He${}^{1+}$, and 0.150 MeV/u He${}^{2+}$ as projectiles and study ionization, single and double electron transfer to the projectile, as well as projectile electron loss processes. The application of a COLTRIMS reaction microscope enables us to retrieve the three-dimensional momentum vectors of the ion pairs of the fragmenting dimer into Ne${}^{q+}$-Ne${}^{1+}$ and Ar${}^{q+}$-Ar${}^{1+}$ ($q=$ 1, 2, 3) in coincidence with at least one emitted electron.

Direct Experimental Access to the Nonadiabatic Initial Momentum Offset upon Tunnel Ionization

We report on the non-adiabatic offset of the initial electron momentum distribution in the plane of polarization upon single ionization of argon by strong field tunneling and show how to experimentally control the degree of non-adiabaticity. Two-color counter- and co-rotating fields (390 and 780 nm) are compared to show that the non-adiabatic offset strongly depends on the temporal evolution of the laser electric field. We introduce a simple method for the direct access to the non-adiabatic offset using two-color counter- and co-rotating fields. Further, for a single-color circularly polarized field at 780 nm we show that the radius of the experimentally observed donut-like distribution increases for increasing momentum in the light propagation direction. Our observed initial momentum offsets are well reproduced by the strong-field approximation (SFA). A mechanistic picture is introduced that links the measured non-adiabatic offset to the magnetic quantum number of virtually populated intermediate states.
