Mid-IR Optical Frequency Comb Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Using an Antiresonant Hollow-Core Fiber

Optical frequency combs (OFCs) enable high resolution, sensitivity, and speed in spectroscopic measurements. An efficient way of generating an optical frequency comb in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) is the difference frequency generation (DFG) process, which involves the interaction of two input waves in a non-linear crystal, resulting in the generation of a third wave with a frequency that is the difference in frequency of the two input beams [1]. The classical way of extending the path of light-gas interaction in spectroscopic measurements, thus increasing the sensitivity, is to use multi-pass cells (MPC). However, MPCs have disadvantages related to the difficulty of aligning laser light into the cell or optical fringes. An alternative approach is to use the so-called antiresonant hollow-core fibres (ARHCF) [2]. ARHCFs are characterized by a wide low-loss transmission range in the mid-IR, high quality of the delivered beam, and their air core can be filled with the target gas sample, which makes them well suited for laser-based gas sensing.

Enhancing Gas Diffusion in Antiresonant Hollow-Core Fiber Gas Sensors Using Microchannels

Abstract In this paper, we analyze the performance of diffusion-based gas distribution in antiresonant hollow-core fiber-based gas absorption cells. Performed theoretical analysis was based on Fick’s second law using the OpenFOAM® software and finite volume method (FVM), followed by an experimental verification of the obtained simulations. The diffusion time was tested for a 1.25 m long fiber, with laser-micromachined microchannels. Full analysis of the correlation between the microchannel count, position, and separation on the rate at which the fiber-based gas cell was filled with the target gas was presented. Experimental results showed that with the proper microchannel configuration, the purely-diffusion-based gas exchange time in the 1.25 m fiber could be reduced from 6 h, down to 330 s. Obtained results correlated with the simulations, giving perspective for the development and implementation of novel miniaturized passively filled gas absorption cells for compact laser spectrometers.

Photothermal Gas Detection Using a Mode-Locked Laser Signal Readout

In this work, a novel configuration of a photothermal gas sensor is demonstrated. The measured gas sample is delivered to a gas cell placed inside the linear cavity of a 1.55 μm mode-locked fiber laser. The gas refractive index modulation resulting from the excitation by an auxiliary continuous wave laser is efficiently probed by analyzing the phase shift of the self-heterodyne beatnote signal of the mode-locked laser. IQ demodulation combined with Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy-based signal analysis was employed to optimize and simplify the spectroscopic data acquisition and analysis. A proof-of-concept experiment with detection of carbon dioxide at 2 μm wavelength yielded a noise equivalent absorption of 2.25·10 ⁻⁷ for 1000 s integration time. The proposed sensor configuration is versatile and can be used to probe any gas molecule, provided an appropriate excitation source is used to induce the photothermal effect.

Open-path laser-based hydrogen sulfide detection at single-ppm level

Hydrogen sulfide (H ₂ S) is a highly toxic gas that can be frequently found in the vicinity of industrial sites such as petroleum refineries, natural gas plants, or waste water treatment facilities. Its open-path detection with sensitivities at single ppm (parts-per-million) levels is critical for safety reasons. Laser-based H ₂ S sensing typically relies on a quartz-enhanced photo-acoustic spectroscopy [1, 2] or methods that use high fineness cavities [3] providing minimum detection limits from few tens of ppm down to below 1 ppm. Unfortunately, both techniques are (in general) not suitable for open-path sensing, they require additional pumps, pressure controllers and sampling lines. Moreover, in both cases operation in a close-cell arrangement with reduced pressure helps to avoid interference from other atmospheric species (this can significantly alter the measurement results in open-path arrangements). In this work we will present an open-path system for H ₂ S detection that relies on a wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) and a Herriott-type multipass cell. We will demonstrate that using this non-complex sensing approach the detection at single ppm level with negligible interference from other gases is possible.

Air pollution has become an important worldwide problem. The European Commission credits road and water transport as the major source of NOx pollution, and of being responsible for around 50% of the total air pollution in urban areas. During the last decade, the use of SCR technologies have gained popularity as a method for NOx reduction, the technology is widely considered as one of the solutions for road transport emissions. This paper presents a review of the different SCR system designs derived from the various factors and regulations in the automotive industry which have influenced the technology, along with a parametric study of a proprietary SCR system for heavy duty application.

Laser-based gas sensing of multiple samples using multiplexing in radio frequency domain

Summary form only given. Laser spectroscopy is a valuable tool in chemical analysis. Analyzing more than one sample is desired (or even required) in many gas sensing applications, e.g. in isotopic ratiometery or gas leak detection. In typical implementations multiple samples are measured with multiple sources and/or detectors or using opto-mechanical switches. Here we present a new approach to gas detection of multiple samples that relies on multiplexing spectroscopic signals in the radio frequency (RF) domain. Therefore, it does not require multiple sensing channels or opto-mechanical switching.

PolarizationMaintaining Erbium Doped Photonic Crystal Fiber Laser 1

A polarization maintaining erbiumdoped phot onic crystal fiber laser (PMErPCF), is pre� sented. The laser operates in a ring cavity in the near infrared wavelength range. We believe that it is the first report of the successful realization of a polarization maintaining erbiumdoped photonic crystal fiber laser. Singlewavelength and multiwavelength operation of the developed fibre laser was observed. Experimental results show that the laser operates with good output parameter stability over a period of one hour and exhibits a 37 dB signaltonoiseratio. We present a detailed description of the design process and of the experimental characterization and validation for the PMErPCF. We also analyze the impact of the photonic crystal struc� ture on the laser parameters.
