This paper is a case study on vibration mapping of Head Expander for 9000 Kgf Shaker as some of UUTs (Units Under Test) were qualifying the Random Vibration Test Level at 3500 Kgf Shaker System where as failed at 9000 Kgf Shaker System at the same Tests Level. The conceptual mechanism is to predict the effect of different control position of accelerometers on UUT and to develop a control strategy on Head Expander of Vibrator. Finally this Experimental Case Study paper has been concluded by focusing on the need of mapping of Head Expander for 9000 Kgf Shaker System.

Dynamic Load Analysis of Side Underrun Protection Device (SUPD) For Heavy Commercial Vehicles with Weight Optimization Using FEA

SUPD is the essential safety device for the safety of smaller passenger vehicle in cases of rear collision. The purpose of SUPD is to avoid the under-run cases from side impact and to absorb maximum of the impact energy resulting lower fatality. This study is focused in Development of Methodology to Assess the Safety Features of Commercial Vehicles during Side Impact of Passenger Vehicle using Finite Element Analysis with Weight Optimization. In India, IS-14682-2004 decides the acceptable criteria for the SUPD of heavy commercial vehicle. In this paper, the optimised design of SUPD is proposed using the FEA analysis of the device according to the government test setup. Then using the LS DYNA software the proposed design was used to reconstruct the accident scenario with a bicycle impacting the SUPD at a velocity of 11kmph. Several design iterations in the SUPD design were made to prevent the severe occupant injury in case of side collision of a bicycle with the SUPD and to find the optimised design in terms of weight and strength. The output results were displacement by SUPD. The results were examined against the regulations of IS14682-2004 in a process to maximising the safety of rider. So a methodology was developed to the assess the safety features of the commercial vehicle at the time of side collision using the FEA method and saving money and time by avoiding the prototyping for every design iteration test.

Review of Supersonic Intake buzz, problems associated and possible solutions

Supersonic intake buzz is a type of shock oscillation that could occur at any supersonic inlet of an aircraft and which can alter the mass flow and pressure at inlet. It may lead to combustion instability also. A lot of experiments have been performed to understand the buzz characteristics while visualizing the flow characteristics through flow visualization techniques. Also, there have been a great effort and research to understand the supersonic buzz phenomenon through numerical simulation with the help of computational software packages. There could be different parameters affecting the buzz. Some of them was discovered by the researchers all over the world. Intake buzz distortion get substantially affected by change in angle of attack. Decrease in throttle area was also found to produce prominent effect on buzz by increasing its dominant frequency. The suppression of buzz has become a topic of active research. The suppression of buzz can help in increasing the efficiency of supersonic inlet and efficient compression, so can result in benefit of increasing the economic output and reducing the fuel consumption. Intake performance was found to be increased with small cowl deflection and by the use of buzz predictor and margin controller. Buzz could be controlled by deflecting the air in an advantageous way and generating a weaker gradient at inlet lip.

Preliminary Design of a Ramjet Engine: An Analytical Approach

This work is based on preliminary design of Ramjet engine. Ramjet engine is simplest type of gas turbine engine used, which consists of non-moving parts for its operation. It is mainly used for power generation at supersonic speeds. This type of engine is mostly used in missiles, with a few applications in aircrafts. The present approach to preliminary design was based on mathematical equations considering ideal conditions. For the design, aero-thermodynamic equations were used starting with intake and followed by diffuser, combustor and nozzle. For the design purpose, initially Mach 2 and thrust of 10 kN was selected as desired condition. Subsequently, it was analyzed for the varying Mach numbers starting from Mach 1.5 to Mach 4 at desired thrust of 10 kN. Also, the design was analyzed for varying thrust from 6 kN to 22 kN at desired Mach number of 2. The results obtained have been reported and effects of variation of parameters have been represented graphically. The graphs were obtained using GNU Octave 6.4.0. The design achieved could be used for further steps of CAD model generation and subsequent analysis for the required purpose. It can serve as a base for detailed design of the engine.

Significance of nonlinearity consideration in finite element analysis for preclinical strength assessment of extramedullary femur plates

Abstract Accurate finite element (FE)-based evaluations demand realistic modeling of the bone-implant construct. For this, considering nonlinearity in the FE model sometimes becomes essential. Human femora exhibit nonlinear mechanical behavior, which could be attributed to material, large deformation, and boundary conditions. The nonlinearity due to material is specified as material nonlinearity, while due to large deformation or boundary conditions is specified as geometric nonlinearity. The objective of the present study is to comprehend the importance of incorporating nonlinearity into FE analyses of extramedullary plates used to treat proximal femoral fractures. Two extramedullary implants – one proximal femoral locking plate (PFLP) and another variable angle-dynamic hip screw (VA-DHS) - were fixated with a femur analog having a simulated intertrochanteric fracture. The constructs were analyzed dynamically for normal walking gait activity and sideways fall scenarios. The analyses were carried out by considering both geometric as well as total (geometric & material) nonlinearity, and the same were compared with the results from linear models. The results obtained from FE analyses of intact and implanted constructs were validated from in-vitro experimental data and FE analysis data reported in previous studies. The investigation revealed that a comprehensive nonlinear analysis, considering both geometric and material factors, can minimize the error percentage to less than 5% while comparing with the data obtained from the experimental approach. The PFLP implant was found to impart higher stiffness (~30%) as compared to the VA-DHS implant under both load cases of walking and sideways fall.
