The Oxidative Desulfurization of HDS Diesel: Using Aldehyde and Molecular Oxygen in the Presence of Cobalt Catalysts

Abstract Oxidative desulfurization of hydrodesulfurized diesel using aldehyde and molecular oxygen in the presence of cobalt catalysts was studied. Among the catalysts used, cobalt phthalocyaninetetrasulfonamide was found to be the most efficient catalyst for the oxidation of sulfur compounds present in diesel. The reactivity of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene is greater compared to 4-methyldibenzothiophene. Sulfur content in diesel was reduced from 448 to 41 ppm by oxidation followed by extraction with acetonitrile. It was further reduced to 4 ppm by passing through a silica gel column. Current Transport Properties of Monolayer Graphene/n-Si Schottky Diodes

The present work reports on the fabrication and the detailed macroscopic and nanoscale electrical characteristics of monolayer graphene/n-Si Schottky diodes. The temperature dependent electrical transport properties of monolayer graphene/n-Si Schottky diodes were investigated. Nanoscale electrical characterizations were carried out using Kelvin probe force microscopy and conducting atomic force microscopy. Most the values of ideality factor and barrier height are found to be in the range of 2.0–4.4 and 0.50–0.70 eV for monolayer graphene/n-Si nanoscale Schottky contacts. The tunneling of electrons is found to be responsible for the high value of ideality factor for nanoscale Schottky contacts.

Excess entropy and breakdown of semiclassical description of thermoelectricity in twisted bilayer graphene close to half filling

In moiré systems with twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), the amplification of Coulomb correlation effects at low twist angles ($θ$) is a result of nearly flat low-energy electronic bands and divergent density of states (DOS) at van Hove singularities (vHS). This not only causes superconductivity, Mott insulating states, and quantum anomalous Hall effect close to the critical (or magic) angle $θ= θ_{c} \approx 1.1^\circ$, but also unconventional metallic states that are claimed to exhibit non-Fermi liquid (NFL) excitations. However, unlike superconductivity and the correlation-induced gap in the DOS, unambiguous signatures of NFL effects in the metallic state remain experimentally elusive. Here we report simultaneous measurement of electrical resistivity ($ρ$) and thermoelectric power ($S$) in tBLG at $θ\approx 1.6^\circ$. We observe an emergent violation of the semiclassical Mott relation in the form of excess $S$ close to half-filling. The excess $S$ ($\approx 2$ $μ$V/K at low temperature $T \sim 10$ K) persists up to $\approx 40$ K, and is accompanied by metallic $T$-linear $ρ$ with transport scattering rate ($τ^{-1}$) of near-Planckian magnitude $τ^{-1} \sim k_{B}T/\hbar$. The combination of non-trivial electrical transport and violation of Mott relation provides compelling evidence of NFL physics intrinsic to tBLG, at small twist angle and half-filling.

Clarified Oil from Fluid Catalytic Cracking as an Additional Source of Group II Base Oil Components

Abstract Clarified oil (CLO) from a commercial fluid catalytic cracking unit was subjected to solvent extraction followed by solvent dewaxing and adsorption chromatography to analyze its various components for different end-use applications. The clarified oil was first solvent extracted using N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) to produce paraffinic rich raffinate (68.9 wt% yield). The raffinate thus obtained was dewaxed using methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) to get an oil of pour point 0°C. This dewaxed oil was then subjected to adsorption chromatography to determine group II base oil potential through yield v/s viscosity index (VI) curve. The results revealed that clarified oil has an actual potential of around 27.1 wt% of group II base oil components, suggesting that clarified oil can be used as an additional source of feed for production of group II base oil. This article also describes the potential of other components in clarified oil such as slack wax (24.2 wt%), aromatics (31.1 wt%), and low VI oil (17.6 wt%).

Process studies for development of adsorption technology for furfural recovery from waste water

Abstract Lube refineries in India are facing pollution problems associated with the occasional loss of furfural from their solvent recovery column bottoms in the extraction plant, which constitute both an economic loss and an environmental hazard. Although earlier studies on furfural removal by adsorption on polymeric resins concentrated on equilibrium and kinetic/breakthrough measurements in small diameter columns in the adsorption, the regeneration of the loaded resin adsorbent has not been given adequate attention. This paper focuses on these issues and also includes studies on larger diameter columns with a view to provide data for design of a pilot scale plant for furfural recovery to be set up in a lube complex. The experimental data from adsorption cycle studies indicate that the resin bed is able to treat 28 bed volumes of furfural laden water bringing down the furfural concentration from 500 ppm to less than 10 ppm. The regeneration data indicate the recovery scheme produces an aqueous stream which contains 3% furfural which has to be taken back to the solvent recovery column in the extraction complex. Adsorption and regeneration data have been simulated respectively by the LDF and diffuse wave model. © 2008 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2008

Effect of surface passivation process for AlGaN/GaN HEMT heterostructures using phenol functionalized-porphyrin based organic molecules

In this work, we investigate an unexplored possibility of passivating the charged surface states on AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) heterostructures by using organic molecules. This has further led to remarkable enhancement in the electrical properties of rectifying metal-semiconductor contacts on AlGaN/GaN. Phenol functionalized Zinc metallated-Tetra Phenyl Porphyrin (Zn-TPPOH) organic molecules were adsorbed on AlGaN/GaN via the solution phase to form a molecular layer (MoL). The presence of the MoL was confirmed using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The thickness of the MoL was assessed as ∼1 nm, using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry and cross-sectional Transmission Electron Microscopy. XPS peak-shift analyses together with Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy revealed that the molecular surface modification reduced the surface potential of AlGaN by approximately 250 meV. Consequently, the Barrier height (ideality factor) of Ni Schottky diodes on AlGaN/GaN was increased (reduced) significantly from 0.91 ± 0.05 eV (2.5 ± 0.31) for Ni/AlGaN/GaN to 1.37 ± 0.03 eV (1.4 ± 0.29) for Ni/Zn-TPPOH/AlGaN/GaN. In addition, a noteworthy decrement in the reverse current from 2.6 ± 1.93 μA to 0.31 ± 0.19 nA at −5 V (∼10 000 times) was observed from Current-Voltage (I-V) measurements. This surface-modification process can be fruitful for improving the performance of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs, mitigating the adverse effects of surface states and polarization in these materials.
