The formation of surface periodic structures based on alkali halide crystals containing metal nanoparticles by ion implantation

The results of the study of the parameters of the surface layer of a LiF crystal irradiated by Ag or Cu ion beam through a metal mask in the form of a grid with a period of 7 µm are presented. It was shown that a composite layer with a thickness of 3–5 µm is formed in the crystal in the form of a periodic structure containing F2 and F3+ color centers and (sub)nanometer metal particles. A diffraction pattern is observed on this structure upon irradiation with a laser beam.

Single F2 and F3+- color centers in the LiF crystal were studied by confocal fluorescence microscopy. The time dependences of their fluorescence intensity were analyzed and statistically processed. Our studies show that, the F3+- color center, being photoexcited, is able enter the triplet state, while in ground (singlet) state it changes orientation with a frequency of 1.5 – 2 Hz at room temperature, due to reorientational diffusion, unlike the F2- center, which is reoriented only being in the triplet state. This subtype of rotational diffusion of the center does not lead to its translational diffusion.

Laser luminescent polarization microscopy of defects induced in lithium fluoride crystals by femtosecond pulses

We propose a spatial statistical model, based on the model of moving foci, of distribution of aggregate centers and other final products of reactions after the passage of a femtosecond laser pulse in a lithium fluoride crystal. Concentration of these defects grows higher on the way from the periphery to the center of filament trace. This model was confirmed experimentally with use of polarization confocal luminescence scanning microscopy method. The research results showed that the periphery of the filament trace is filled predominantly with stable F centers, the region closer to the filament trace center – with F2 – color centers, F3 + centers appear with the increasing concentration of anionic vacancies as the distance to the center of the filament trace decreases on the way to the filament trace center. Strongly damaged lattice area containing colloidal lithium particles and dislocation loops is located in the filament trace center itself.

The conversion of color centers in lithium fluoride crystals at temperatures of 50–490°C

Studies of the photoluminescence spectra of γ-irradiated lithium fluoride crystals during temperature annealing in the temperature range from 50 to 490°C were conducted. Experimental data show that F2 and F3+ color centers decay at different rates as temperature increases. The transformation of the F2 and F3+ centers is accelerated by action of laser radiation on γ-irradiated LiF crystals during annealing.

Luminescence of single color centers created in LiF crystals at low dose of irradiation

Color centers, found in lithium fluoride crystals grown in a reducing atmosphere and irradiated with a low dose of X-ray radiation, emit spectral luminescence band with maximum λmax = 800 nm and decay time constant of 26.5 ± 1 ns at room temperature. As the radiation dose increases, the concentration of these centers quickly saturates, while the concentrations of known intrinsic color centers continue to increase. This indicates the impurity nature of these color centers. The trajectories of the luminescence intensity and the decay time constants of single centers of this type were investigated. The luminescence is of flickering character. The temporal characteristics of the trajectories of luminescence intensity for different centers of the same type are different, while their decay time constants are the same. Similar pattern was revealed for the F2 color centers. These properties of single color centers in monocrystals are discussed.

The role of avalanche ionization in generation of defects in lithium fluoride crystals under the action of femtosecond laser pulses

The paper presents the results of experimental and theoretical studies of the role of avalanche ionization in the process of highly nonlinear generation of electron-hole pairs in the interaction of intense femtosecond laser radiation with dosimetric crystals LiF:Mg,Ti. We assume that the effective formation of defects of hole-interstitial type, which consist of molecular halogen ions placed in one cationic and two anionic vacancies, distinguished by high-temperature peaks in the thermally stimulated luminescence curves, is feasibly connected with avalanche ionization processes occurring in the regions of passage of light filaments. The calculated dependences of the plasma density on time during the laser pulse made with taking into account the avalanche ionization for this type of crystals show that the contribution of avalanche ionization to the electron-hole plasma density is comparable to that of the multiphoton tunneling mechanism.

Formation of aggregate color centers under the action of femtosecond laser pulses

A complex study of primary and aggregate defects formation in LiF crystals under the action of femtosecond laser pulses is carried out. These processes were compared for nominally pure and dosimetric LiF crystals (LiF:Mg,Ti). Taking into account high concentration of generated electron-hole pairs, it is proposed that the formation of primary Frenkel defects as a result of direct electron-hole recombination is possible along with the excitonic mechanism. Subsequent processes of aggregation of primary defects with stable defects formation are similar to LiF coloration with X-rays and other types of radiation.
