Lead-free 0–3-type composites: From piezoelectric sensitivity to modified figures of merit

Effective piezoelectric properties, electromechanical coupling factors (ECF) and figures of merit (FOM) are studied in lead-free 0–3-type composites based on novel ferroelectric 0.965([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]O 3 –0.035[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]O 3 ceramic. Systems of prolate ceramic inclusions are surrounded by a large polymer matrix that can be either monolithic (in the 0–3 composite) or porous (in the 0–3–0 composite). Non-monotonic volume-fraction dependences of the effective piezoelectric coefficients [Formula: see text], ECF [Formula: see text], squared FOM [Formula: see text] and their modified analogs for stress-driven systems are analysed, and examples of the high longitudinal piezoelectric sensitivity ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text] 100 mV ⋅m/N) are considered. A role of microgeometrical factors, that promote the large effective parameters and anisotropy of properties in the 0–3-type composites, is highlighted. New “aspect ratio — volume fraction” diagrams are first built to describe conditions for high piezoelectric sensitivity, large modified FOM and their anisotropy in the studied composites. These advanced materials can be of value for piezoelectric sensor, energy-harvesting and related applications.

Piezoelectric anisotropy in modern composites based on ferroelectrics

Anisotropy is a term used to indicate the directional dependence of a biological, chemical, geometrical, mechanical or physical property of a system that develops in different ways along different spatial axes. This material behavior is observed in many engineering disciplines, computer graphics, geology and geophysics, medicine, neurosciences and natural sciences. Thus the research approaches within those disciplines accordingly varies. This book has collected contributions of new research developments and the corresponding research results from different disciplines with particular focus on experimental, numerical and theoretical studies of material property variations. Thus, the materials in this book indicate significant directions on new research progresses and are expected to give future research perspectives in anisotropy behavior.

Abstract A proposed model which takes into account an elastic interaction between a polydomain grain and a surrounding ceramic matrix under weak external mechanical stresses has been used for evaluating a contribution from 90° domain wall displacements to piezoelectric and elastic constants of the perovskite ferroelectric ceramics. A difference between experimental and averaged constants of BaTiO3 ceramics can be explained by the estimated contribution.

Domain wall displacements and piezoelectric activity of KNbO₃single crystals

The role of domain-orientation effects in forming the piezoelectric coefficient d33 of polydomain KNbO3 single crystals in the mm2 phase is studied. Non-180° domain wall displacements in the electric field E ∥ [001] are analysed, and their contributions to d33 are evaluated. A link between these contributions and crystallographic characteristics of domain structures is revealed for the first time for different 60°, 90° and 120° domain structures.

Hydrostatic piezoelectric parameters of lead-free 2–0–2 composites with two single-crystal components: Waterfall-like orientation dependences

A system of hydrostatic parameters is studied in novel 2–0–2 composites that contain two lead-free piezoelectric single-crystal components. The ferroelectric domain-engineered alkali niobate-tantalate-based single-crystal layer promotes large values of the piezoelectric coefficients [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], hydrostatic squared figure of merit [Formula: see text], and hydrostatic electromechanical coupling factor [Formula: see text] of the composite wherein the 0–3 Li 2 B 4 O 7 single crystal/polyethylene layers are adjacent to the aforementioned single-crystal layer. Hereby, the role of the elastic anisotropy of the 0–3 layer is emphasized. An orientation effect concerned with rotations of the crystallographic axes of the piezoelectric Li 2 B 4 O 7 single crystal in the 0–3 layer is first studied. It is shown that the orientation of the crystallographic axis [Formula: see text] of the Li 2 B 4 O 7 single crystal in the polymer matrix strongly influences the piezoelectric properties and hydrostatic parameters of the composite. Examples of the so-called waterfall-like orientation dependences of the hydrostatic parameters are analyzed. The composite based on the domain-engineered [Li x ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]]([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]O 3 :Mn single crystal is of interest due to [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]mV[Formula: see text]m/N, [Formula: see text] Pa[Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]–0.75 in the studied volume-fraction and orientation ranges, and these hydrostatic parameters are to be taken into account in the field of piezotechnical, hydroacoustic, and energy-harvesting applications.
